| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! First of all... hi! This is my first post on this forum (wow). Um, yeah. So anyway, about Vabmojer... Vabmojer is an alien world which I have made with several of my friends. It is an earthlike planet, but we have done our best to make the animals as un-earthlike as possible. We are working on a website, although right now it is not complete. Still, feel free to have a look! (And I apologise in advance for the artwork - I'm not the best drawer ever) Type this in the address box; www.vabmojer.bravehost.com See what you think! |

If you're referring to the map on the website, the colours are only to show the different biomes. They needn't necessarily be the actual colours of the planet. As for the atmosphere, I'm not sure. It is similar to Earth overall (similar levels of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon), and that's why it was colonised. But there could be other elements or compounds in the air that could turn it different colours. Any suggestions? |

Red? Dust or algae could do that. That could also explain yellow, green, blue, cyan, purple or orange. Iron oxide? Large quantities of Bromine? |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

Ooh, I don't know... I don't know the amounts of rust, dust or germs in the atmosphere, but I like the idea of a really colourful sky. Okay, vote; red, orange, yellow, green, cyan or purple?

Purple seas, yellow atmosphere, and variable land? Then the seas would look green from above though. |

I'm not sure about purple oceans... I kinda imagined them as being nice to bathe in (minus the predators...). But a yellow sky would be nice and cheery. I was thinking of setting up a poll, could anyone tell me how to do that? Also the biomes page is finally online (and still not complete - I missed off Tundra and Oceans.) See what you think. EDIT; I've just accidentally subscribed to this forum. What does that mean?

Why aren't purple oceans nice? Bathing in grape juice would be fun. Yarp, and yellow skies are cool. When you start a topic, i think it gives you the option of making a poll. |

Yeah, but purple... personally, I'd go for Carribean-style crystal-clear seas. That way, you'd see the predators coming towards you. I'd also like the idea of a fiery, orange sky as a backdrop to "dramatic" scenes as a Syphoyd rips apart a hapless Elopee... gory. So you have to set up a poll when you first set up the topic? Is there no other way? And also, I reterate my question from my last post. I've subscribed accidentally. Should I panic?

No idea. I don't even know how to do that. If you had crystal clear seas, you might select invisible or crystal clear predators.

Well, when I said crystal-clear, I meant like the seas around places like Malta... certainly, a lot clearer than the greyish-brown seas we get around Wales. But I suppose you would have to have areas where sediment caused murky waters. After all, you have to have currents, otherwise something like the extinction at the end of the Permian might happen... |

Well, so far orange is winning! Actually, in a way thats good, because the Gyrophel is orange and so it's good camouflage. |

Well, besides the Gyrosprinte, I like them all. The only thing I don't like about it is I'm having a hard time imagining it walking. Can you explain a little on it's locomotion? |

That gyrospinte is an interesting creature. Reminds me of a lot of the life on Nereus. I like the genetic engineering legend the colonists accept. What are some of the purposes they speculate that the creature was engineered for?
There's actually a post on the Furaha blog (the latest one, incidentally) that explores how creatures can walk with odd numbers of legs. It explores five legs and three legs. Just add some mantis-looking appendages on the forward leg and you have the gyrospinte. Incidentally, did you create that in Spore? It seems to bear certain hallmarks...
