| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! First of all... hi! This is my first post on this forum (wow). Um, yeah. So anyway, about Vabmojer... Vabmojer is an alien world which I have made with several of my friends. It is an earthlike planet, but we have done our best to make the animals as un-earthlike as possible. We are working on a website, although right now it is not complete. Still, feel free to have a look! (And I apologise in advance for the artwork - I'm not the best drawer ever) Type this in the address box; www.vabmojer.bravehost.com See what you think! |

Yep, muffins are awesome. Glad you like the tree-biter. The picture isn't done yet, and apparently Tommie's having internet troubles, but as soon as they're sorted, the Dino's are gonna be online. The only thing is, I fear they will be something of an anticlimax... |

I'm sure they'll be good. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

What's the catch? Yet more delays. Tommie's computer won't be connected to the internet until Monday. Damn. |

Indeedy. Anyway, have you made any organisms in the meantime? |

All the organisms have technically been made, but not all of them have a background (ie behavior, etc), and almost all of them will have to be redesigned. There are a few, however, that I have finished. Such as the Partoo, an amphibious marine-iguana equivilant from the Fiinely Archipelago. It belongs to the genus Psitticocephalomimidae, which are so named because of their parrot-like beaks. The Partoo is no exception there, but it is otherwise perhaps the most distant member of its' group. Whilst the majority of Psittico's are four-limbed herbivores, the Partoo is a piscivorous herbivore (ie, it eats "fish", but also uses its' beak to scrape seaweed off the rocks, rather like a marine iguana). Its' front legs have evolved into powerful "arms", with fins running up them which aid underwater locomotion. Their hind legs, however, are the most strange parts of this beast. They have split into two, lost a large part of their bone structure, and gained powerful "suckers" - essentially, they have become tentacles. They use these to cling to the rocks in the splash zone. Despite all these marine adaptations, they are still air-breathers, and relatively slow in the water. During the breeding season, they form raucous flocks on the most barren islands, safe from predation. |

Just revive this topic slightly, with another species - The clear, shallow oceans of Vabmojer simply teem with life. Although there are no fish, there are plenty of Uduceratoicthydae, which are often simply called "fish" by the colonists. Despite the name, there is only one species which have "horns" - the Jaguana. So named due to their spotted camouflage, these "fish" are quite disparate compared to the others in their group. These have "horns", a forward pointing spike, which is used for a bizarre mating riual involving jousts between males. Perhaps the strangest feature, however, is the proboscis, which earns the Jaguana the nickname, "butterfly of the sea". These proboscises are used to drink the "nectar" of the "Spring Flowers", coiled plants which are covered in small, pink and blue flowers. The Jaguana , in drinking the nectar, also pollinates the flower, just like Honeysuckles, or Terran bees. They are highly successful, despite having no obvious defences, and are sometimes kept in aquarium tanks, by those wealthy enough to afford them. |
