Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

First of all... hi! This is my first post on this forum (wow). Um, yeah. So anyway, about Vabmojer...

Vabmojer is an alien world which I have made with several of my friends. It is an earthlike planet, but we have done our best to make the animals as un-earthlike as possible. We are working on a website, although right now it is not complete. Still, feel free to have a look! (And I apologise in advance for the artwork - I'm not the best drawer ever)

Type this in the address box;

First, I think there are some broken links on the about page, and the pages under 'Life' wouldn't load much. Is that an issue on my end or do you just not have anything there yet?

Secondly, I'm pretty curious about the Novus. Since not much is up yet, or my browser wouldn't finish loading the page, can you describe them a little?

You might want to try a different web host... this one tries to bypass pop-up blockers. Nobody likes forceful pop-ups.

It's hard to actually leave a comment on this since the website is so incomplete, there's no real description of the life forms, how they live, and what they eat. I'm just going to gather what I can from the front-page illustration.

I can say a few things. The life is very Earth-like at least for the Maws and Dinos (No offence, I'm just being honest). Dinos especially look as if they could potentially have evolved from an Earth tetrapod.

Did you have any ideas for their evolution? How are the creatures related to one another?

Welcome to our site, or as they say in Wales Mae fy hofrenfad yn llawn llyswennod. Good to finally get civilized people round here.

The Maw looks interesting but a bit...Snaidy.

Yes, well I'll be the first to admit that the website is not yet complete. But our IT whizz, Tommie, is working on it, and it should hopefully be complete within the next two weeks. The current genus's on show are only the first of many which we have designed, and so once the website fully complete, I'll start work on more.

KayKay, yes, I know that the Dino's look very Earth-like, but that is convergent evoloution (or at least, that's what I'm explaining it away as...) Please try to understand that we have very little collective knowledge on speculative evoloution, so we're trying our best.

As for evoloutionary trees, I'm working on them, although it may be a while. I'm hoping eventually to allow other people's concepts and life ideas onto the site.

(PS the Novu's are our attempt at something a little more alien than everything else. Some of them look very ungainly, and as such have only managed to survive in relative isolation)

Yes, I understand. I only made that comment because you said you were going to try to make them as un-earth-like as possible...

Did you have any current ideas for their evolution? How are the creatures related to one another? (I know you said you'd be working on it but I'm just curious if you have anything so far)

Well, I have worked out a bit of the evoloution...

The genus Dinosaurimimidae is split into two major groups, the Theropodae and the Ceratorhyncosauridae. Basically, the Theropodae resemble theropod dinosaurs, whilst the Ceratorhyncosauridae are native only to the continent of Rovelin, and have several underlying differences regarding genetic structure.

The Dinosaurimimidae is, in turn, part of a larger group known as the Sauridae. The Sauridae look a lot like reptiles, and include some lizard-like animals (the Lacertidae), some herbivores with head-crests (the Cephalaspidae), and also a strange beast, sole reprasentative of its' genus, which has two heads (a la Snaiad), which is known as Dicephalidae. The Novu's are a relativly primitive bunch, as are the Sordicocephalidae.

There are also two other genus's which are very closely related - the Pterodae ("Truckle's") and the Coelorhinidae. Both can fly, and overall are superficially similar. However, the Coelorhinidae are descended from the truckle's, and are isolated on the island of Wettham, where they have diversified into a number of arboreal species, and the very strange Nectar-horse.

This is all I have on the evoloution so far, except that the Maw's first evolved in Vaghis and migrated north to Matulande, and the Novu's and Dino's originated in Matulande and managed to brave the tundra of Chozo before reaching Rovelin.

By the way, if you go on the Spore website and type in Vabmojer in the sporecast section, you will find a small sporecast with some of the lifeforms in. (Good luck, though, because everytime I try to find it, it comes up with no results... but it is there. Somewhere.)

Yeah I was wondering about that. The animals seem to have very disparate bodies.

Oh wait, hang on - did everyone think that worm-thing on the title image was a Maw? It isn't. It is actually a member of the Vabmojan worm-equivilants (for that one , it belongs to the sub-genus Atroxoididae, which is basically full of monster-worms). I know the heads are similar, but that image was done when Vabmojer was still in its' infancy, at least as far as concepts are concerned. The final design for that creature will (probably) look nothing like it.

If I'm honest, the ideas already are worked out. I currently have twenty-two genus's, with roughly four or five members to each. Obviously, there are more species in each genus, but I am only able to show some of the more well-known or interesting animals. At the moment though, most of them are just a pencil-line drawing with a common name written next to them. I have almost completely filled my homework-planner from last year with them (you know how the lessons towards the end of the year kinda start to tail off a bit...)

My friends and I (five of us in total who who have worked on it) first imagined up some random animals in class. Having read Snaiad recently, I thought about turning it into a planet, which they helped to name and design.

Vabmojer is actually a mixture of our surname initials, with some other letters thrown in. That drawing was done very quickly, as my response to our decision in creating a planet.

Attention all! By tommorow morning, the first genus of animal on the website should be online and available to read. That's the Sordicocephalidae genus. Remember, the website is www.vabmojer.bravehost.com

Thanks for your support of Welsh. It gets me really annoyed when people ask "Wales? Isn't that in England?"

Yes, so ATTENTION ALL! The Sordicocephalidae page is now online! Please view and tell me what you think! (And also note that it still isn't finished - it could take a while before it is.)
