| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Exactly what it says on the tin. I wonder how hard it would be to grow a house? |

Oh you know what people are going to use those for. But actually using them to wash might be fun. Better than the swarm of insects. Oh imagine the warm cosy towels you could make from living hide! |

Just take if for a walk and let it go in the bushes. Or if you are disgusting you could have a litter box. |

If the biotech was intelligent, it could be a walking calculator. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

I've started reading the excellent S.M Stirling's Lords of Creation novel In the Courts of the Crimson Kings about a world where Mars and Venus were terraformed long ago and resembled the worlds that people prior to the 60's though they would find. On Mars they make extensive use of tembst which translates somewhere between "technology" and "livestock". Guns fire quills using methane, airships flap though the sky on feathery wings, basically anything more advanced than a sword tend to be alive, including the toilets. My personal favourite is the Martian equivalent of binoculars, which resemble a cross between bino's and an octopus that clamps down on your face, starts sucking you blood and links up to your brain letting you use it's powerful eyes. |

Has anyone considered just making machinery that can carry out some of the functions that living things can, but not others? Say, machines that "grow", but don't come slapped with mortality and other such setbacks. |

But then you wouldn't have to go and buy a new one. No company wants to make a product that never breaks down. |

If you can find a way to explain immortality, i'm all ears. |

Well biological immortality is generally theoretical but looks like it would work. |

...constantly reproducing cells? The genes would wear down. Unwearable genomes? Evewntually, mutations will shut you down. No genes? ...? |

Simple: the "organic" machine wouldn't be composed of cells, but of nanites. A bunch of nanites strung together would result in an "organic" surface, and allow the development of mechanical organs and systems made of such nanites. Nanites would have a lifespan much greater than traditional cells, and might even have the capacity to rebuild themselves when broken. |

Or make it a colony of small life instead of a single organism OR have the genes renew themselves when (IF) the cells reproduce. |

How would the genes renew themselves? Rejuvenation genes? Then they would wear down. Nanites, although hard, are just as susceptible to programme mutations through radiation, if not more so. |

Same way that genes renew themselves when a microbe splits. |
