| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Exactly what it says on the tin. I wonder how hard it would be to grow a house? |

organic technology, you mean like using wood and bamboo and bones and leather and cotton and fossil fuels and paper and various other natural materials? |

But using them while they're still alive. LIke genetically engineering a creature that would be a living, breathing purse that would hold your valuables and bite intruder's hands if they tried to reach inside it. |

oh, so like dogs bred for guarding, herding, looking cute and whatnot, possibly even spidergoats? but nah, i get what you guys mean... personally i don't think a living shelter would be useful, maybe portions of it could be and it would likely have to be fed using tubes that pump sugar rich liquid into it, much like electrical wiring in a house... |

Technically the term should be Biological technology. Plastic is Organic, but I went with the popular term. I don't know if I would want to put my money into an aggressive animal's butt. I expect their would be a spate of people coming into hospital who got bitten by their purse. Or others who "tripped" in a awkward way and need to get their purse removed from a delicate area. I wonder how well a living coat would do? |

A living coat would be self-heating, so, I imagine very well if people get over the weirdness of watering their coat. |

I think they have those in East of Eden. And I'm not sure how, people get bored and fuse into a shambling mass of flesh, ready to exude “Brains, fresh brains for baby Jesus,” You can listen to the story here, the American accents are a bit jarring when you find out this happens in the UK. http://escapepod.org/2009/07/11/ep206-rogue-farm/ |

a living coat would be interesting, it being heated would be a little iffy since that would mean a high metabolism, but it could feed off of peoples oil and sweat... so it might end up being really hot, and sticks to your skin... and doesn't sound pleasant at all... |

I don't think I would like my coat licking me, and I doubt my sweat would be able to sustain it. |

You could always get used to it. I imagine it'd be like a self-cleaning system, where it cleans all the sweat and oil from your skin regularly. Great for bacne! |

Well that might be interesting, your coat climbing onto your head to lick your forhead. What if they made tongue flannels for washing? That would be a rather queer shower. |
