| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Here's the basic idea: Stange Matter as a fuel source. Strange Matter isn't stable. It half-lives, or, at least the mathematical models imply it would if it exists. Anyway, the point it, as it half-lives it would release energy in the form free-radical quarks, which could be used as a power source. At the same time, More Strange matter for fuel could be created by simply dropping more matter into the chamber, when meeting with the Strange Matter an ice-9 like reaction would occur, converting it into more Strange Matter for fuel. Any problems with this idea? (and no, I have no idea how the free-radical quarks could be converted into energy, but I am sure there's a way) |

Does it produces controllable amounts of heat to boil water? Does it take more energy to get Odd Goo than you extract from it? |

That is theoritical. We have little idea of how particle decay, let alone particle decay of exotic matter, would work. Well, I imagine once you have a little strange matter making more would be easy, do to the ice-nine quality, so after a while it would repay the energy debt. Though the initial loss is something I have yet to figure out, since strange matter isn't exactly being produced anywhere. |

Good idea, but what happens if it gets out of control? The whole planet gets destroyed all because you had to go and play with something dangerous and theoretical. I'd rather try and harness vacuum energy; that's everywhere and requires little to no energy to obtain. That and it's limitless. And wasn't the ice-nine accidentally dropped into the ocean, crystallizing all the water on Earth? Edited by Ànraich, Sep 7 2009, 05:14 PM.

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

No, Ice-nine was the Doomsday device from War and Peace, I think it was planned on being dropped and the plot was around preventing it, but I don't know. And vacuum energy is more dangerous then this, if you tapped into it you could cause the entire universe to spiral down to a lower energy-state, instantly rewriting the laws of physics (well, practically rewriting) creating a new universe where probably nothing that exists currently could exist. This would only endanger Earth, not the universe. Besides, it's meant to only be used on spaceships. Dangerous, but an limitless supply of energy. Edited by Temporary, Sep 7 2009, 05:21 PM.

Whaaaaat? War and Peace? By Leo Tolstoy? No. No no no no no no no. That was about the Napoleonic Wars and Napoleon's invasion of Russia. Ice-Nine was from Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle and was invented by a scientist (who helped build the atom bomb) to help troops in Vietnam cross the swamps without being stuck or exposed. He gave pieces of it to his family, which they kept in a thermos they all carried around. They lived on an island ruled by a dictator, who got cancer and wanted the ice-nine to commit suicide. He was frozen (as ice-nine is a type of ice that stays frozen at room temperature) and a plane crashed into his palace, flinging his body into the sea and freezing all the liquid water connected to it (which is almost every body of water on Earth). EDIT: And if we were harnessing vacuum energy I doubt the universe being destroyed would be our concern, as we could probably just make another one. Edited by Ànraich, Sep 7 2009, 05:36 PM.

Ah, my mistake then. If our universe was detroyed, we would not have time to make another one. |

Russia honestly isn't that cold. Their geographic location gives them really brutal winters though. |

This form of matter sounds like what I have read about Tiberium from the Command and conquer series. In that series an alien species plants these Tiberium crystals on Earth where they start absorbing minerals and mutating life into forms that can spread the Tiberium infact these crystals even make the enviroment radioactive and leathal to most. Infact the humans and eventually the aliens start using speacial machines to havest it and use it as a power source though I have no idea how that is done. Eventually it gets so bad that Humans from all sides start working together for a solution as the Earth is destroyed. And is any one else having a problem with the quick replie not working and sending you to the normal replie? |

Don't use vacuum energy. Smarter Canadians have tried and failed. I think I like my solar system not mostly blown up. |

Okay, hold it, name change. The matter I was using wasn't strange matter, but a form of non-stable hyper-dense nucei matter, strange matter is the opposite of this. Until I can find the real name, let's just call it heavy matter. Lamna: Canadians have tried vacuum energy? |

I remember reading a story where they shine a laser around a blackhole, and as it is flung back out they used it to heat mercury because water flash boiled. |

Well, the ZPMs aren't exacty based on real theories of Zero Point Energy, they just liked the name and went with it, from the way it shows up on there. The science is a little off... (especially in that episode) Edited by Temporary, Sep 8 2009, 05:43 PM.

Well SF in visual media has to be at least a bit squishy for it to be interesting, or at least that is what everyone things. What about the blackhole idea? the Democratic People's Republic of Congo used one in the story to lob artillery shells at the People's Democratic Republic of Congo. Or was it the other way round? Anyway they would drop a shell near a blackhole, half of the projectile would fall in and the rest would be flung out at incredible speed. |
