| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. You know the alien. That face hugging, acid dripping, stomach bursting, cantankerous creature of HR Giger's fantastic imagination. We're talking about Ellen Ripley's nemesis and Ridley Scott's meal ticket. Terrifying and slightly resembling your boss, she has made an indelible impression on movie-goers for 30 years. Unfortunately that impression has been watered down as this ferocious beast of deep space has never been explaned. For this we want how it works. Is the facehugger, chestbuster, monster a working idea? Could it evolve? What good is it? So here is where to post ANYTHING that has to do with this space monster. |

Ah. Does not necessarily smart. Goldfish can learn to push leavers. Also how do they see? |

Ah of course, though that sound itself can't be effective echolocation. |

I don't know how well echolocation works in a big, metal tube. Wouldn't all the acoustics make your "vision" fuzzy? I mean what good is echolocation if it echoes all around? |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

It's different than the eye as we have it and not exactly the most efficient system. But then again if they're just drones what does it matter how complex they are? Perhaps the Queen has eyes. |

Well it matters quite a bit. If they're drones, they're the ones doing all the work. To have something inefficient and blind doing all the work you can't do yourself would be a game of evolutionary Russian roulette. |

If nothing else on their planet has eyes what is the problem? Also you have LOTS of drones so if a few die big deal. |

The queen has to produce drones, which means the drones must somehow provide energy for the queen. If they're inefficient and easy to kill, the queen gets less energy and produces less drones. The fewer drones produced, the less energy you get. If the drones are inefficient, you end up losing energy. It's like owning a company and spending money left and right; you end up losing more money than you make. |

well obviously from what we can see from the movies they are not easy to kill. also as for eyes i would imagine it would be the other way around, the drones have eyes due to having to deal with the world while the queen sits in her chamber eyes and force fed by the drones while she pumps out eggs... |
