Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

You know the alien. That face hugging, acid dripping, stomach bursting, cantankerous creature of HR Giger's fantastic imagination. We're talking about Ellen Ripley's nemesis and Ridley Scott's meal ticket.

Terrifying and slightly resembling your boss, she has made an indelible impression on movie-goers for 30 years. Unfortunately that impression has been watered down as this ferocious beast of deep space has never been explaned. For this we want how it works. Is the facehugger, chestbuster, monster a working idea? Could it evolve? What good is it? So here is where to post ANYTHING that has to do with this space monster.

Yeah, the question is: how adept are they as swimmers?

I only vaguely remember the swimming scene, so I'm not sure.

Are you plausible?

I remember (in the swimming scene) that the spine-like extensions along their tail served as a decent propulsion surface. In short, they were pretty maneuverable in the water. And those were human-xenomorphs, not fish-xenomorphs!

What, you just need a fish big enough, don't you? And there are plenty of those...

Well yes I suppose, but how are the face huggers going to get to them, or catch them?

Surprise? Ambush? Facehuggers are tenacious survivors (until their purpose is over) and were able to survive on LV-426 (the planet in Aliens) without debilitating effects. It's possible that they can survive in water and 'infect' some sea life. In fact, there is a non-cannon occurrence of this in the comics (source):

Quote:

In the Aliens Colonial Marines story published by Dark Horse Comics, a group of marines ends up on a colony planet known as 'Bracken's World', a primarily oceanic planet that grows large amounts of sea kelp. Having become stranded on one of the kelp beds following an APC breakdown, the group is attacked from the water by large xenomorphs resembling queen aliens from the top half, and a more whale-like structure below the waist with a lateral tail fin and several trailing tentacles.

Ah have I, and while cool it's damned unlikely. Whales have rather large faces.

As I said here and you said here, it's conceivable that a facehugger doesn't necessarily have to hug the face to do its thing.

And there are other large swimmers besides whales. Sharks, rays, eels, tuna, turtles, etc...

Well maybe not, but I still don't see how face huggers are going to find whales.

Also, how do they keep the host from biting their alien wing wang off?

The aliens invade Sea World? It doesn't really matter. We just needed to get them swimming, and you can do that with lots of other animals.

*Shrugs.* I dunno. The director tells them not to? "No facehuggers were harmed in the making of this movie!"

You can make swimming done/workers but that does not help the face huggers. The drones would have to carry a dolphin back to the eggs on land.

Lol, but somehow I doubt that people with not bite it off, even if you knew they had acid blood.

Well, facehuggers constrict you to unconsciousness using their tails, then stick the proboscis down your throat.

Either way, I'd rather be implanted with a chance of having the thing removed then have my face dissolved away by acid...
