| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Fungi are even more murderous than plants; they infect animals and kill them! How evil it is to control insect populations! Lets face it, all lifeforms must die! |

They murdered most of our world's lifeforms billions of years ago when lifeforms that weren't adapted to oxygen lived |

Fungi can't survive on there own. Vultures generally only eat carrion, but won't live long if everything else is dead. I say just Kill em All and let someone else sort em out. |

how about lichens, or deepsea bacterias, or even those deep sea tubeworms? i don't think they actually eat the bacteria they grow in themselves... |

Why are you guys even debating this?! I though you thought it was stupid. And if you'd read that Tetrapod Zoology post, you'd realize that Darren Naish feels that way too. |

I came here to tell everyone to get back on topic but I couldn't help but laugh at this. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Make me chuckle too. So is this even possible, could you make a otter photosyntheses? |

Yes, of course. Though, it would be difficult, since you would need a large supply of living tissue with Chloroplasts getting sunlight. so either a living epidermis or a transpararent epidermis with photosynthesis occuring in the hypodermis. In either case you would need to remove the fur, so the aquatic life-style or any cold environment would be gone. Then you would need other changes to it's behavior, like less moving (not hard, not looking for food to eat or places to take a dump as often), but would also need to slow down any other biological functions. So, slower heart beat, less action from any other organ. Probably shrink the brain down and lower the standard body temp a good ten degrees or so to conserve even more energy. From there, you have to deal with growth, which would occur differently now with a lower body temperature and so much energy conservation, plus, except mouthfuls of dirt, not much consumpton going on. With nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, being harder to digest it now should grow slower, since it would be nearly impossible to get the same amount out of dirt it would normal food, so take longer to grow, but may live longer as a result. This is just a few thoughts, maybe the fur could bne used for photosynthesis or something, but this sounds about like how I would build in. Now here's the real question: Would you still recognize it as even being close to an otter? |

i'm sure you could, there are plenty of invertebrates that survive on photosynthesis (most a symbiotic relationship, one sea slug actually has chlorophyll in it's cells) so making a photosynthetic otter doesn't seem too difficult... but then you have to consider that an otter doesn't maintain its skin, it sheds the cells all the time, so you would have to have specialized portions that don't shed, then you have to consider how much energy the otter uses and that it's a fairly large animal so it would probably need a lot of these lobes... and you'd end up with something that looks like a fleshy pile of oak leaves running around. |

Not worth the bother. It won't really be a otter, more a bag of skin. Best to do the humane thing instead. Death to Otters!!! Edited by lamna, Sep 7 2009, 01:42 PM.
