| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2009/08/predatory_animals_are_bad.php Frankly this is downright stupid. That there are people out there capable of putting all life on earth in danger just because its "wrong" for animals to feed on each other is ultimately repulsive; nature doesn't work according to our weak, stupid concepts of justice that we call morality. Besides, do plants deserve so much to die that all animals should be herbivores? Frankly, I absolutely hate vegans. Go to hell you idiotic cow primates! |

Wow, end suffering by wiping out carnivores. Don't worry about the problems caused by overpopulation. Nature works. Be happy it does. Shut up. Smile. Walk away. Edited by Temporary, Sep 4 2009, 05:33 PM.

That's up there with Communism for very stupid ways to solve non-problems. And not all vegans are insane. My girlfriend is not, though she also eats blocks of mouldy milk which people claim tastes good called "cheese" and salmon. |

First of all, there's no such thing as suffering. What you consider to be suffering is something that another organism considers necessary; it's all subjective, depending on your perspective. With no predators, herbivores would overpopulate and starve, possibly even eat so much plant life that the atmosphere cannot be replenished with oxygen, meaning everything, predator, prey, or plant would die. Secondly the majority of vegans and vegetarians don't believe that eating meat is wrong, them simply choose not to. Just because you don't believe in eating animals doesn't necessarily mean you believe that eating animals is wrong. And thirdly, do plants not get a say in this? They're alive too. And an herbivore is just a predator that hunts plants. PLANTS ARE THE ONLY GENTLE THING ON THIS PLANET, THEY DON'T HARM ANYTHING AND MAKE THEIR OWN FOOD. PLANTS DOESN'T AFRAID OF ANYTHING! If they get to kill all the predators I get to kill all the herbivores. Besides, we're predators ourselves; if the lions have to die so do we. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Yeah, only fanatical vegetarians are idiotic. But those who aren't are usually very friendly people. But I've read this post, and frankly, such an idea isn't even practical. An ecology with more herbivores eating plants than plants are growing is a very unstable one, and ecological collapse will ensue. Why do humans want to twist nature to fit their morals? I know a frog eating a mouse may not be very pleasing to watch to most people (although both animals are cute in my opinion), but guess what, it's nature in the works!
Oh they sure do.

True-ish. That may be true but it's no reason humans should give up the dream of immortality. Dicking about with nature is only going to damage it. |

actually there are plants and animals who do not die from age. but i think the way they do it is something humans would not be very fond of doing... Edited by colddigger, Sep 5 2009, 02:20 PM.

you're not a philosopher because you chose not to take that path in life? It is possible that you are one without realizing it. |

Plants actually are inate murders who kill other plants and many herbivores; some antilopes in captivity die because of the defense system of acacia trees, for example |

You're right, we'll have to kill all the poisonous plants and prickly cacti. In fact, let's just kill all the plants too. Fungi are gentle and can just as easily survive without everything else. |
