| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Here is a nice test I found to see if you can decifer an alien message. In order to find out if you are a member of the elite 0.0001 percent of the human population you most decode 4 of the 5 following "alien" messages. I have hope! So go forth and do so !!!!!Message 1: You are working with a team of scientists who look into the sky to see a flying saucer blinking a light with a sequence of short duration (0) and long duration (1) flashes. what could the following pattern signify? 01101010001010001010001000001010000010001010... Message 2: A small gray alien hands you a card with the folowing sequence: 2 71 828 1828 45904 523536 0287471 35266249 775724709 . . . If your team cannot tell him the significance of this sequence within two hours, the alien will begin examining you with various cold, metalic instruments. Message 3: Aliens are waiting for humanity to replace the following question mark with the next value before they consider us worthy for further comunication: 77 49 36 18 ? Message 4: A message from Alpha Centuri is as follows: 14 15 92 65 35 89 79 32 38 46 26 43 38 . . . The President is offering a million dollars for anyone who can solve this code. Message 5: the following sequence is brodcasting using long (1) and short (0) beeps. Solve it! 0 01 0110 01101001 0110100110010110 . . . The only message I did not solve was message 2 if that helps! With all due respect to the great Clifford Pickover |

In terms of simple communication, yes. But there's only so much you can do with math, despite what physicists say there's only so much you can describe with mathematics. Besides, I'm simply talking about contact, letting us know they're there. Not full blown conversation. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

It's called maths. And while it might be universal, the message written in it would still be nonsense unless we knew the language and alphabet. Prime numbers do sounds like a useful way to say "we are not stupid" but their is only so much you can say with it. |

Maths? Good sir, it is math, as in short for mathematics. |

I agree that the first message we would ever be able to decode from another planet would be something mathematically basic but undeniable, like the indication of prime numbers or something similar. Such a message wouldn't say much more than, "Yep, we're here and we're smart enough to know what a prime number is!" After that initial recognition then we'd have to start the slow and difficult process of developing some sort of interstellar portmanteau, which will certainly not happen in the course of any single life time. Perhaps several generations may pass before we even get back the second response... |
