Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Here is a nice test I found to see if you can decifer an alien message. In order to find out if you are a member of the elite 0.0001 percent of the human population you most decode 4 of the 5 following "alien" messages. I have hope! So go forth and do so :) !!!!!

Message 1: You are working with a team of scientists who look into the sky to see a flying saucer blinking a light with a sequence of short duration (0) and long duration (1) flashes. what could the following pattern signify?

01101010001010001010001000001010000010001010...

Message 2: A small gray alien hands you a card with the folowing sequence: 2 71 828 1828 45904 523536 0287471 35266249 775724709 . . .

If your team cannot tell him the significance of this sequence within two hours, the alien will begin examining you with various cold, metalic instruments.

Message 3:

Aliens are waiting for humanity to replace the following question mark with the next value before they consider us worthy for further comunication:

77 49 36 18 ?

Message 4: A message from Alpha Centuri is as follows:

14 15 92 65 35 89 79 32 38 46 26 43 38 . . .

The President is offering a million dollars for anyone who can solve this code.

Message 5: the following sequence is brodcasting using long (1) and short (0) beeps. Solve it!

0 01 0110 01101001 0110100110010110 . . .

The only message I did not solve was message 2 if that helps!

With all due respect to the great Clifford Pickover

I thought it was a hidden message about switching your car insurance. They come in the mail these days.
I wish I could give the public a true picture of the queen as she appeared at her best, but this would be impossible, even had she permitted a photograph to be taken, for her charming play of expression while in conversation, the character and intellect which were then revealed, were only half seen when the face was in repose. -Lilias Underwood when speaking of Empress Myeongseong

"I was born in the dark. I went out into the light, and your Majesty, it is my displeasure to inform you that I have returned to the dark. I envision a Seoul of towering buildings filled with Western establishments that will place herself back above the Japanese barbarians. Great things lie ahead for the Kingdom, great things. We must take action, your Majesty, without hesitation, to further modernize this still ancient kingdom."-Min Young-ik to Empress Myeongseong

Because I'm just that good.
WITCH! HE'S A WITCH!
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

I finally registered here just to reply and say ARGH!

All I have so far is a hint at what the fourth one might be, or more likely just a red herring within the fourth one, and that the first one has a similar red herring in that it starts counting in binary then stops...damn this is hard :P Or exceedingly simple and I'm missing it :P

Well he would be, I mean God is an Englishman after all.

And I have already said what the answers are.

I have to say that this is all very unlikely in terms of long distance communication with an unknown intelligent species. Coding in binary requires that you have the alphabet it is based on, and considering we would have no idea what sent it or how they communicate, we couldn't even being to figure out their alphabet, let alone the message. If they were going to use binary it would be best to use it in a way as to form images with 1's and 0's.

But really what we should be looking for is repeating patterns of prime numbers. Prime numbers aren't really produced naturally by any kind of force, especially not repeating, non-random sequences of them. Our best bet though is to look around and see if they sent anything like Voyager-1 that had something we could physically observe rather than digitally attempt to translate. If they included a map of their solar system or local star system that would be even better, because then we would know where to send our signals rather than randomly flinging them off into the void.

Well I've just worked out the Alpha Centauri one...damn that lol

EDIT: and message 2 which I'm now kicking myself for...
EDIT: got message 5, well at least I understand how to replicate the code ad infinum still probably failing to grasp the importance of it.

I disagree Parasky. Math is universally understood and is involved in nearly everything. Although picture messages are an effective method of communication, math and science may be one of the few things we have in common with the extraterrestrials. All forms of communication depend on a similarity, so math and science may be the way to go.

I'm not sure math is universal. My bank-account balance is proof.

And I wouldn't get my hopes up too high about ever understanding a alien message.
On earth, men are still trying to decode women. B)
