| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth.

As some of you may know, I once had a project called Rilln, but it kind of died on me around Christmas. This is a resurrection of that project. I am going to make it more plausibe and actually give it evolutionary history now that I know what I am doing speculative wise. For new members who've never heard of Rilln: On the introduction to Snaiad, Nemo Ramjet says that some Earth countries have spread throughout the galaxy, settling various planets. He says that America settles a planet with glass trees and nanotechnic creatures. He also says that Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, and other countries in that general area settle a planet of two-headed animals (i.e. Snaiad). So I wondered: what planet was settled by China? This where Rilln starts. But with its resurrection, I have decided to change the name to reflect its colonists. I have changed to planet name to Tongban (pronounced Tahn-bane), based on the Chinese world for metal, which refects the planet's abundance of this substance. Tongban has a gravity three times that of Earth. This requires organisms to have kind of fortification to counteract the gravity's effects. The colonists have a suit that they wear which allows them to function in this gravity. The native lifeforms, however, use the abundance of metal to their advantage. The organisms have evolved a skeletal-like system that uses metal-based muscles to support them. The first lifeform on Tongban (Ossiteria) were bacteria that had three lipid bi-layers, with the outer two being strengthened with calcium (one of a few kingdoms of life (all microscopic) that do not use metal for fortification). Eventually, the ossiteria became colonial, and thus larger. They evolved multiple nuclei to coordinate different aspects of each cell (for example, you had a master nuclei (that coordinated each nucleus), one that controlled digestion, one that controlled division, one that controlled excretion, etc.). These colonial ossiterians are now extinct (the non-colonial ones are still around). However, the colonial ossiterians gave rise to a super-kingdom of true multicellular organisms that use iron for their fortification. This super-kingdom (named Ferramunitia) includes two kingdoms: Ferphytus and Pennafera (more on these two kingdoms later). Pennafera eventually evolved some carnivorous species. To increase their speed (which helped them catch prey), they evolved iron strands that ran parallel with the muscles instead of a solid tube. As the prey became faster to cope with their speedy predators, the predators started experimenting with other kinds of metal-based fortification systems. Of these experiments, only the ones with copper fortification survived. This super-kingdom (Cupramunitia) is the dominant super-kingdom on Tongban. Ferramunitia still exists, but Cupramunitia holds most of the major niches. Modern-day taxonomy (by modern-day, I mean 540 years from now): Domain Neoprokarya: Kingdom Ossiteria Domain Neukarya: Super-Kingdom Ferramunitia Kingdom Ferphytus Kingdom Pennafera Super-Kingdom Aenamunitia Kingdom Glezhiwa Kingdom Cupraferina There are three phylums within kingdom Glezhiwa that I could tell you about, but it's getting late, so I'm going to hit the hay. But I have attached two biome maps of Tongban to this post (one map of the eastern hemisphere and one of the western), each with names of the biomes, rivers, ocean, continent, two islands, and biome locations (what I call things like the Sahara desert, Amazon rainforest, Atlantic ocean, etc). It also gives a description of the biomes. Enjoy! Remember to post comments, questions, and critiques. P.S. I'm still going to work on TFIB. This is just someting to do when I want to take a break from Earth's future. P.S.S. This is sort of a sequel to Snaiad, for those who didn't catch that. P.S.S.S. This is based off of a world in "All Tomorrows". The world Tongban is based on is the one with copper-skeletoned tripeds and an introduced therizinosaur. Edited by Canis Lupis, Jul 9 2009, 02:40 AM.

Probably not... hey Canis, how about recycling the metal coral idea from Rilln? It's quite cool in retrospect, and adds new biomes... It sheds metal shells FYI. |

Atek: No. But I'm thinking of a therizinosaur-like predator. CarrionTrooper: The metal coral idea is in there. That's kingdom Ferphytus (iron plant). I've got that biome right here:
The reefs are formed by a combination of a shed skeleton and of living organisms, which are detritovores, carnivores, and some photosynthesizers. Empyreon: Don’t worry. I’m currently working on a phylum list. After the phylums are done, CarrionTrooper (my partner) and I will start making individual species (note: if anyone else wants to become my partner on this (or even on TFIB), just PM me or e-mail me at canislupis95@gmail.com, give me one or two ideas, tell me your skills, and I’ll consider you). The phylum list will be posted as soon as it is done. Even if it's a double-post. |

Okay this sounds awsome I like the idea of metal coral in dark waters and some other things about this project. After I reread this and read the old thread I might pm you but only if I am able to get some ideas to present. |

Alright. I'll be waiting. Anyone else? You don't even have to be a partner of this project to submit ideas. I won't mind either way. |

The only thing about me joining is that I think I need a better understanding of the anatomy of these especially the animals, I was also confused by the differences in the names and some other things when comparing the 2 topics which I hope won't lead to any inconsistencies with my ideas. |

Once I get the phylum descriptions up, we won't need the old topic anymore. Those descriptions are the key to the anatomy, and once they're up, you'll know all about it. Here's the first part of the four-part phylum descriptions. It's for kingdom Ferphytus: PHYLUMS (ALL THAT ARE PRESENTED ARE IN DOMAIN NEUKARYA) Super-kingdom: Ferramunitia Kingdom: Ferphytus Phylum: Lumacatina Characteristics: four stalks that anchor them to the sea floor at a depth similar to the photic zone; a “head”-like top shaped like an over-turned bowl (this is called a catina); a photosynthesizing organ at the top of the catina; sessile; autotrophic; an iron skeleton (that is highly un-maneuverable) covered by a layer of skin to protect the skeleton from rust Super-kingdom: Ferramunitia Kingdom: Ferphytus Phylum: Perversa Characteristics: single stalk that anchors them to the sea floor at a depth similar to the twilight zone; an upside down catina, with the old top attached the stalk; a multitude of nozzles (number varies between species) that radiate outward from the new top, each with nerve-like endings to sense prey moving by (when prey swims by, the nozzles envelope them and suck out the fluid with a straw-like opening; an iron skeleton (which is highly un-maneuverable) covered by a layer of skin to protect the skeleton from rust; heterotrophic; sessile; most are liquivores (non-liquivorian species rip off bits of flesh with the nozzles (which have no iron fortification, giving them great maneuverability)) Super-kingdom: Ferramunitia Kingdom: Ferphytus Phylum: Motilcruta Characteristics: their catina is like it is in phylum Lumicatina; each of their four stalks have migrated to the circumference of the bottom of the catina (rather then the center), so they can walk around in the osteefs (which are located in depths similar to the twilight zone); they’re detritivores, but some species eat dead organisms that aren’t detritus; each of their stalks has a mouth on the end so they can eat as they walk; they have a non-iron-fortified joint in each stalk, which is the key to their maneuverability; heterotrophic; motile; most are detritivores Just to let you all know, I'll be gone for three days, so I won't be able to post again until Tuesday. I'll be thinking up phylums while I'm away so I can show their descriptions to you guys when I get back. |

Okay well I look forward to your return. As for those groups they they sound really good but they sound to simular to be phylums though thats my opinion. |

I'm back. Atek: You're right about those phylums being too similar to be phylums. So, I have updated the phylum list. Now, instead of their being two kingdoms in super-kingdom Ferramunitia, there is one: Fermunita, which contains phylum Catipossideo and phylum Pennafera. So here's an updated phylum list for them, along with an updated biome list: |

Okay, those group names sound cool by the way. Also your pics keep wanting me to down load them in a sense but I don't think I am allowed to by my families rules so is there a way that you could post them with out the download thing? If not I will see if I can get my family to let me. |

Do you ever open up an attached file? Sometimes your friends (or even) yourself will send a file attached to an e-mail message, which is usually a document. That's basically all this is. But I'll post these on deviantart soon. Maybe by the end of today. |
