Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Future Predators of Humans

I rememebr that once in Peter Ward's book he mentions the differnt things that could possibly thin the human population. He mentioned, then dismissed at once the possibility of a new sort of predator. As he correctly observes, any such predator would be quickly elininated or contained if it started preying on our species. Humans would simply not allow ourselves or our children to become food.

But that got me to thinking. Suppose some future genetic scientist, engineered some sort of future predator to prey upon humans, perhaps as a way of cleansing the population of :defectives" or undesirables". The species could be genetically programed to hunt only humans as a food source. And it might be programed to eliminate only those humans who carried certain traits such as genetic maladies.

This would have to be done in such a way that the human population would not know what was happening, and could not take the action needed to eliminate the predators. This creature would be engineered from humans themselves. The creature could have engineered traits from other animal species, such as camaflauge abilites, and perhaps sonar from bats to stun their prey. BTW, I thought of this idea long before that "future predator" thing from Primeval, and I thought of posting this today, even before I read that other thread.

I also thought of making this idea into a story, in which the heor has to find who is releasing and controlling these predators and how to stop them. I usually try not to bash genetic science in my stories, like some authors do, but in this case the plot would demand that I do have a rogue geneticist.

Maybe a kind of communal organism, like a bacterial colony. Bullets and shells could hurt it, but not the entire organsim. But watch out for nukes...

Single celled organisms are always more resilient than large, multicellular ones. An exception is the Tardigrades, however.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Pople would make a single celled organism that would hunt IT.

If it's going to be a single celled organism you might as well make it a disease.

Hmm. But a disease is different, i think. I'm think it takes apart prey molecule by molecule...

I'm talking about a big slime mould-thing which squelches around and as it touches the unlucky victim, the flesh dissolves into nothing within seconds and is absorbed throughthe LIVING SLIME! HA HA HA HA HA!!!

As cool as that sounds, it would not really work. Rather than being a huge blob, it would be more like a lumpy puddle of doom.

Um... help?
Plants have mechanisms to help them stay up, maybe my doom slime would have a kind of piping or cell walls. I love my doom slime. Anyway, a puddle is even better disguised, and it can creep up on people better.
But it doesn't have intelligence.
Help?

Maybe a that is intelligent, so it can learn the patterns of its victims, and has great camouflage, so it can hide in metropolitan areas. Then it would need a way to silently kill the victim, human. I was thinking maybe it comes up behind the human, when its alone, or in vulnerable, and have a certain anesthetic, that immediately disables the human, so he can't fight back, or warn others. Then it would need to eat all of the human, so that no traces are found. Perhaps this anesthetic also dissolves the human into a gelatinous form, then consumes it. It would have to be a very highly advanced creature indeed. :geek:

Also if one was to shoot one of your puddles the bulet would spray bits of it everywhere helping it breed. Do not get me started on what a bomb would do. ;)

Quickly breaking killing would probably be enougth. Many people would assume any sound was just kids messing about.

The heat and shock wave would kill most of the cells?

This is ending up just like a horror film. I think ours would be a box-office sell-out.
