| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I rememebr that once in Peter Ward's book he mentions the differnt things that could possibly thin the human population. He mentioned, then dismissed at once the possibility of a new sort of predator. As he correctly observes, any such predator would be quickly elininated or contained if it started preying on our species. Humans would simply not allow ourselves or our children to become food. But that got me to thinking. Suppose some future genetic scientist, engineered some sort of future predator to prey upon humans, perhaps as a way of cleansing the population of :defectives" or undesirables". The species could be genetically programed to hunt only humans as a food source. And it might be programed to eliminate only those humans who carried certain traits such as genetic maladies. This would have to be done in such a way that the human population would not know what was happening, and could not take the action needed to eliminate the predators. This creature would be engineered from humans themselves. The creature could have engineered traits from other animal species, such as camaflauge abilites, and perhaps sonar from bats to stun their prey. BTW, I thought of this idea long before that "future predator" thing from Primeval, and I thought of posting this today, even before I read that other thread. I also thought of making this idea into a story, in which the heor has to find who is releasing and controlling these predators and how to stop them. I usually try not to bash genetic science in my stories, like some authors do, but in this case the plot would demand that I do have a rogue geneticist. |

Don't want them invincible, just hard to kill. When are they going to be exposed to vacuum? Acid's okay so long as it doesn't go into contact, or if the surface is acid-neutral- like the mineral composites forming the Species' shells. Forcefields vs. grizzly big bores- hmmm. Small arms waste biomass. The ultimate evolutionary sin. We have lasers, but they don't have the right wavelength focus. A microwave could frazzle a human brain at far less than a megawatt. This laser isn't biological. I'm not making deities here. Why waste biomass on feet of plate?

The vampires from the ringworld books. The reason, people would never be able to wipe them out as other people would keep toothless ones around for... <nevermind> Make it so they only need one to breed and give birth in litters and they could become quite a problem. |

Dunno, just postulated it as an environment where they wouldn't survive. Being "acid neutral" does not make you immune from corrosive compounds.
Oh god, not forcefields again...
Because a laser is going to spend far less biomass then a chemically-propelled projectile. Right. We also have microwave "MASERS". Don't see too many of them in the hands of infantry troops.
Right, and it runs on biomass. This is akin to making rifle ammunition from human excrement. Edited by T.Neo, Feb 18 2010, 03:36 PM.

More of a grenade launcher don't you think? And I still say you just irradiate any random animal. It will grow to a large size and go on a rampage. Do it enougth and you can really damage human populations. |

It ionises DNA, which invariably makes something go wrong. pity that.
Acid neutrality sure makes you more resilient.
I was conjecturing whether a Grizzly Big Bore could penetrate an ion projection field. See? Technobabble sure helps here.
The power does not come from biomass, it comes from any wavelength absorbed by the nanobots which sit around within its skin and organs.
Masers are currently under development, power problems occur. You need a truck-sized maser with current technology. Fission masers, anyone?
It doesn't run on biomass! See above! |

There is a miniscule chance the radiation will cause something to be replicated in the gametes, but if you change any other cell, you get cancer. |

If it's corrosive you are still going to be corroded.
What the hell is an ion projection field? Is it more then just nonsense floating around on the internet? Is it in use or being studied by the military? And what do you mean by "Grizzly Big Bore"? .45? 12.7mm? A 12-guage shotgun firing slugs? A 20mm weapon?
Do you know how little energy said nanobots would recieve from that? And how they'd actually have to be put together to transmit it, store it and utilize it? It's total gibberish.
Yes, you need a truck to power the thing. Which is why it isn't in use anywhere. And fission does NOT solve any problems. You'll need a fission device the size of a powerplant. Good luck.
Neither would small arms projectiles... Edited by T.Neo, Feb 19 2010, 07:40 AM.

Actually, some creatures do fire biomass. With limitations. Total gibberish? So every single wavelength, radio to cosmic rays, radiation, body heat, light, UV rays, microwaves and background produces no energy? WTH? And that's why i said masers were 'under development'. LAR Grizzly Big Bore .50 BMG, actually.
1. You didn't bother to read my post properly. 2.I've already siad it's technobabble, and the only wayi can think of it working is a magnetic field with an ion engine covering the outisde with low-energy ions. The weapon detonates before it hits the onject, and sensors are messed up with its radiation. See? I just made it up. I never said they had it. 3.Orbital weapons are not being studied in depth by the military, but they would definitely wipe out a squadron of tanks even just armed woith ICBMs. In short,. my post is saying WTH are you on about? |

Yes, they do.
No, it just doesn't produce enough.
Even if they were "developed", projectile weapons would be far superior, especially for antipersonnel purposes.
ASAT weapons. One bag of ball bearings detonated in the orbit of your orbital missles, and said missles will be torn to shreds. |

Then we'll have to adapt weather satellites and use the element of surprise. ![]() If you used neutrinos and gamma radiation going through an electromagnetic field, would you be able to harness the interaction energy? Just a thought. |
