| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I rememebr that once in Peter Ward's book he mentions the differnt things that could possibly thin the human population. He mentioned, then dismissed at once the possibility of a new sort of predator. As he correctly observes, any such predator would be quickly elininated or contained if it started preying on our species. Humans would simply not allow ourselves or our children to become food. But that got me to thinking. Suppose some future genetic scientist, engineered some sort of future predator to prey upon humans, perhaps as a way of cleansing the population of :defectives" or undesirables". The species could be genetically programed to hunt only humans as a food source. And it might be programed to eliminate only those humans who carried certain traits such as genetic maladies. This would have to be done in such a way that the human population would not know what was happening, and could not take the action needed to eliminate the predators. This creature would be engineered from humans themselves. The creature could have engineered traits from other animal species, such as camaflauge abilites, and perhaps sonar from bats to stun their prey. BTW, I thought of this idea long before that "future predator" thing from Primeval, and I thought of posting this today, even before I read that other thread. I also thought of making this idea into a story, in which the heor has to find who is releasing and controlling these predators and how to stop them. I usually try not to bash genetic science in my stories, like some authors do, but in this case the plot would demand that I do have a rogue geneticist. |

that was a funny movie, for something like mimic to work you'd need subways and sewers and any other underground passages to all be connected somehow (openings large enough for people to pass through) and for much of it to go unchecked (low city budget i guess) |

As long as i can recall, the insects in mimic (Judas Breed) were genetically designed predators with the original purpose of annihilating cockroaches in NYC. I think the Judas Breed was originally designed to be sterile and die within months after killing cockroaches, but they had some kind of metabolism accelerating enzyme that allowed the Judas Breed (a mixture of termite and praying mantis) to evolve into a deadly predator that got the ability to imitate humanshape in order to stalk and hunt humans. Also, the monster from the Relic: Named "Mbwun" (translation: "He Who Walks On All Fours"). Description, at best, is a "scaly primate." Characterized by an unusual smell and glowing red eyes. The DNA of this creature includes gecko genes. Is described as being "as fast as a greyhound with the intelligence of a human." Was much stealthier than its movie counterpart. Received more sympathy in the novel; both Margo and Ian Cuthbert described it as "lonely" and "sad." Used to be archaeologist Julian Whittlesey. Transformation time may have been the same, but the time from arrival in New York to killing humans is measured in years rather than weeks, and begins with small animals. There is some evidence of the monster retained some sentimental feelings of his human life. The packing crate that contained the Mbwun plant the monster needed was stored for a time at the museum and allowed the monster to survive without killing. Only after the crate and dried plants were moved beyond its reach did it turn to killing. |

There are other animals faster than a greyhound. |

Dude, the characters in the novel merely tried to guess how fast was Mbwun. At some point, one of them points that the monster is really fast, not actually matching a greyhound's speed. Also, there's the fact that the monster managed to beat the crap out of a full S.W.A.T. team with ease (the creature's skin was almost bulletproof) and it was killed with a lucky shot straight to one of the eyes. |

Mbwun was cool but unlikely to evolve. After all it was part human, part lizard, part superpredator and all lunatic. The idea of a microbe that could change DNA turning a human into THAT is rather stupid. However relic was a wounderful book. |

Buletproof... now that won't evolve unless the creature is at least as big as a ceratopsian, or is covered in 5 inches of scales and scutes. |
