Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Future Predators of Humans

I rememebr that once in Peter Ward's book he mentions the differnt things that could possibly thin the human population. He mentioned, then dismissed at once the possibility of a new sort of predator. As he correctly observes, any such predator would be quickly elininated or contained if it started preying on our species. Humans would simply not allow ourselves or our children to become food.

But that got me to thinking. Suppose some future genetic scientist, engineered some sort of future predator to prey upon humans, perhaps as a way of cleansing the population of :defectives" or undesirables". The species could be genetically programed to hunt only humans as a food source. And it might be programed to eliminate only those humans who carried certain traits such as genetic maladies.

This would have to be done in such a way that the human population would not know what was happening, and could not take the action needed to eliminate the predators. This creature would be engineered from humans themselves. The creature could have engineered traits from other animal species, such as camaflauge abilites, and perhaps sonar from bats to stun their prey. BTW, I thought of this idea long before that "future predator" thing from Primeval, and I thought of posting this today, even before I read that other thread.

I also thought of making this idea into a story, in which the heor has to find who is releasing and controlling these predators and how to stop them. I usually try not to bash genetic science in my stories, like some authors do, but in this case the plot would demand that I do have a rogue geneticist.

The only creature I can come up with that could hunt humans would be some genetically engineered shape-shifter.

haha, yea, I watched that on primeval the other night as well! a wingless bat, how interesting...

anyway, I think any scientist designing a creature to eliminate 'imperfect people' would be a compleete idiot.

I mean, the idea's fine by me, but it would not work... whatever traits the creature's creator programed into it's brain to hunt for are suppressed in every human, even if they're not visible. personality traits are especialy bothersome in that way, as everyone ha the capeability to think every possible way. an unstopable creature like that designed to attack only certian people would undoboutatly destroy the entire human species.

haha, still liked that primeval creature though... XD
because there are an infinite number of alternate realities, withen them an infinite ammount of infinite things are possible... infinitly.

You just gave me an idea! I could have a scientist kidnapped and "persuaded" in engineering such a creature by a complete idiot. That way, sceintists would be off the hook. I've often criticized the glut of Hollywood movies andnovles that have "evil" or mad scientists, and try to protray science as dangherous.

As for the traits, I was thinking more along the lines of genetic diseases, not traits like criminality.

Well, I could see a sort of virus being used to control the population. Maybe it'd only target individuals who have genetic diseases or malfunctions...or on a much more sinister level, target specific groups of people, or people who 'could' be more likely to cause problems (although that part's ridiculous).

Like some evil Gattaca.

...Otherwise, I think bugs are terrifying enough. Imagine a swarm of meat-eating beetles, like roaches, that's taken to living humans. Bugs are hard to get rid of. ;-;

I can't help but imagine a genetically modified octopus with traits from snakeheads (like short-term respiration on land) intelligence uplift to our level. Maybe their bodies naturally produce strong neurotoxins.

Aim it for the homeless, druggies, and criminals. Looking for a genetic disorder is done to death.

Maybe an evil scientist could create a super predator like Zilla, in that it is asexual, born pregnent, and gives birth to over 200 young. That could wipe people out.

I have an idea for a predator which I named "Peryton" after a creature from the greek mythology, but it mainly preys on creationists and homophobes so...

Some ideas:
-Remember the Mbwun from the Relic? Lot of them hunting people. Engineer a monstrous human-lizard-random monster thingy that is capable of hunting humans with ease, has the ability to reproduce asexually and is bullet-proof.
-Rage Virus a la 28 Days Later FTW.
-Carnivorous, gigantic rats. RAT SWARM RUSH.

Highly evolved and atrophied creatures that can't burn blood normally and need to drink human blood. With heat rays. And tripods.
