| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Here is a response to sam. 1st we do not know how close to the P-T boundary these animals were transported too. This means that they might have a descent amount of time to evolve to this enviroment. 2nd yes most large animals would go extinct(as you said) but thanks to the 1st point the future predators might have enough time especially with their intellegence to adapt to smaller prey and take only the minimum needed to survive allowing life to continue and for them to survive the upcomming extinction which would be alot less of an impact on life since all that is left of life is the small things that would have survived any way plus animals might be slightly more advanced than they were originally since they have had to evolve with advanced predators. Now here are some adaptations for the future predators. Darker skin for the intense light from lack of Oxygen and shade. Some thing akin to a Camels hump for water and fat storage. Larger ears and maybe tung for heat loss. A slower matabolism from lack of food. And a much smaller size in adaption to the small prey that it hunts and lack of food. And maybe even some other traits that I did not think of. Also They would most likely still be effected by the extinction which might allow for Dinosaurs to come into existence especially as Herbivores which the future predator descendents would not fill eventually creating large Dinosaurian herbivores and openning up the evolutionary path ways for giant future predators most likely replacing the Theropods as the dominant carnivores and leading to their eventual extinction in the K-T extinction leaving the world free for the Paramammals to take over even faster than on our world with out birds evolving and more advanced senses and other traits thanks to the predation of the Future predator dominance. This would actually be a very interesting world to speculate on what do you all think and would you join me on this project if it was made? |

I think the future predator might exhaust it's food supply during the P-T extinction. |

It might but these animals are near human intellegence and by this time they would be much smaller, another thing is that their populations will be lower in the permian and even lower in the extinction along with their relatively high reproductive rate might allow them to survive. And the reason they die in the K-T extinction is they loose intellegence over the course of evolution and become very large and specialised(which is the main reason smaller groups died out). And am I the only one having trouble with the fast replie buttom going to the main post screen? |

You all wonder how the future predators came to be? Here it is, straight from The Primeval Wiki: Future Predators are apparently not natural creatures and were created in the ARC, implying they are genetic mutants, created using cloning mechanisms |

Well, in series 3 Helen Cutter said something like that. She claimed that the future predators were created by the ARC and that if she would kill our early ancestors (Australopithecus) the future would not be destroyed and full of these predators. Oh, and in case you don´t know yet, Primeval has been saved from extinction. Two new series will be out in 2011, and there will likely be new future creatures to discuss (they said in an interview they want to make a variation of future predators from other series… possibly “The Future Is Wild”?) |

I thought series 4 was december 2010-early 2011? But both series will be short. |

Oh, and there's another future creature from Primeval that we haven't discussed yet. It's not from the show, it's from one of the spinoff books, so there's never been any canonical artwork of it. It's called the "future bird." It shows up out of an anomaly in South America (First anomaly outside of England! Yippee!) and uses some sort of gas or pheromone to control a pack of Thylacosmilus that also came through the anomaly. It is described as being vaguely humanoid in shape, with a tooth-covered tongue that can dig into its prey's flesh. |

Apart from a script which described a scene where a Pliosaur attacks a submarine nothing has been revealed yet. But there certainly will be new future creatures and the raptors will probably return as Connor and Abby are still in the Cretaceous at the beginning of series 4. I´m not sure about the Future Bird from "Shadow of the Jaguar". Is there any bird today which uses pheromones? Because if not, then it seems like a big stretch to me - even though not as big as the colour-changing Gremlin. |

I think I read somewhere that it could have evolved from woodpeckers, because of that tongue. |

I doubt a bird that uses pheromones to control mammals can really exist as: 1- Most birds have a weak sense of smell, and obsolutely none use chemical communication, so evolving pheromones in the first place is very unlikely. 2- Birds are very different from mammals, so its unlikely they'd be able to mimic mammalian pheromones Also, how the hell can the bird actually control via pheromones? No known mammals, and certainly not Thylacosmilus, can be ordered around simply by smelling good to them! |

Birds have a fine sense of smell, but I also really doubt such a critter could arise. |

This is their only good show... Even if it is more than a little formulaic. And anomalies are best in England. Things are generally best there. BUT perhaps one in the Yorkshire Dales or on the South Moors would be nice. |
