Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

i think that the future predator is possible from a bat but other creatures could have easily the bat as a ancestor.

when does helen attack the ark?

as for the mer they could be possible, but the camo creature and insect are improbable.

As for the giant insects, the atmosphere may have spilled into the area near the anomaly, as it did near the beginning with the giant spiders (actually scorpions) and giant centipede.

With the fungus, the creature from the movie Splinter was probably more realistic.

Even with a lot of oxygen in the atmosphere insects that size wouldn't very likely exist, due to their delicate exoskeleton. Plus, that thing cannot possibly be derived from a beetle

The thing might not be a beetle but if it reinforced its skeleton with calcium or silicon then maybe the six foot height might happen.

By the way, that reminds me, anybody here read "Your Inner Fish"? Excellent book. :D You would all love it.
The ancestors tale was better.

Maybe Dixon's nightstalker really existed at one time.

night stalker was the big ol' walking bat right?

doubtful... to my knowledge bats developed after dinosaurs died off and never ran on their arms taking down prey in groups...
Oh Fine.

Oh hi you! Why don't you go check out the finery that is SGP??

Future Predator could have lost flight for the same reason that Dodos did, a lack of predators. Then, after conditions drove them to become larger, stronger, super-predators, they would never re-evolve flight. Of course, this would take ridiculous amounts of time.

Insects exoskeletons are NOT delicate, in general. It's their size that makes them so weak. You could snap a piece of stainless steel with a diameter of two milimeters as easily as the exoskeleton of the average insect. Also, they may have evolved some system that allows them to maintain themselves at such a size. Also, exactly how large are they? I never saw that episode. If they're forty feet long or anything like that, you can probably scrap them. If they're six feet tall or so, it might be plausible.

If there's any beetle today that's likely to evolve into the megopteran, it's not the tiger beetle. It's the rove beetle. Rove beetles are long-legged, have short wings, and are vicious predators of other insects. And to top that off, some of them can spray boiling liquid from their abdomens!
And yes, Genesis, the beetles are six feet tall. It says so in their description. There have been land arthropods that big before (think of Arthropleura) so I think the Megopteran is not as implausible as you all make it out to be.

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

The whole anatomy of the megopteran makes it completly impossible for it to be derived from beetles. And Genesis, the fact that it would take so long for a bat to become anything like a future predator only makes it more unlikely; during that time anything else could evolve to take that niche.

Also, note that arthropods need to replace their exoskeletons as they grow; this implies that there is a considerbale period of time where they sit waiting while a new armour grows, leaving them as fragile bodies. Because said bodies can be shaped, its difficult to not end up deformed at a considerable large size

I've never watched Primeval, but it seems to me that, while the mer creature is a little far-fetched, some type of marine ape may not be out of the realm of possibility. If global warming does end up decreasing the planet's continents, aquatic adaptions might suddenly become very useful.

The global warming as a whole won't be a massively important factor in the future (after man's demise would take like some thousand years for the world to recover, so the period ot time involved is ridiculously short)
