Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Just a quick (non-sequiter) thought: I've always wondered what a spin-off Primeval animated sereis would be like. I've actually created several "episodes" and even "characters" for a fake one, which follows a multinational group of experts who track anomalies around the world (the cast of the main Primeval series make a guest appearance in the last episode).

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

There´ll be a Canadian Spin-Off series with a team in North America and the movie will probably be set in another country and have another team than Britain, too.

Since I've been stalking the topic, and someone said about the Megapterans not being plausible due to the exoskeleton, couldn't it be thinner than it looks and the insect being mainly supported by muscle? This might solve shedding, too. Now, we only need to find how the breathing's so advanced...

I was looking at the episode guides for Series 5, and there are two creatures in it that might be from the future. One is a "large burrowing creature" that starts tunneling underneath London, and the other is a swarm of unamed animals that cause the ARC to lock down. What do you think they might be?

I was just going to post about the new future burrowing creatures when I saw someone talking about this, anyway some people in the primeval wiki say that the burrowing creatures could be a descended from the future predator and that it live onthe futue Sterile Earth(turn sterile by the anomalies). Also I think that the swarming creatures could be a type of insect from the future or a new type of swarming creatures that isn't a insect. Also the first time I heard the term swarming creatures I thought that the swarming creatures could be a massive swarm of nanorobit colony like the one in the novel prey. But I douth that both the swarming creatures that isn't a insect and a robotic colony from the future could be it since they always get the idea from creatures that have all ready have been speculated.

I just checked the episode guide again. . .it says the swarm is a "future beetle." Do they mean the Megopteran or a new animal?

I don´t like the beetle idea that much, either, as I think it´s a way too uncreative future creature. They could have just used a swarm of Carboniferous cockroaches or large Eocene ants and it wouldn´t make much difference.

And a German synopsis of episode 5.1 described the burrowing creature as a gigantic insect.

Series 4 had not a single arthropod and no future creatures, so maybe they want to balance that out by having two in series 5?

I thought that was kind of refreshing, actually. The show's called Primeval, for heaven's sake!

Unless there are more, yet unannounced creatures they´ve got 8 species of future animals and over 35 species of prehistoric animals, so the name "Primeval" still makes sense :P

Sorry for double post, but I´ve got a new future creature for you to rant about discuss:

The giant burrowing future insect from episode 5.1

Apart from the whole "this thing is too large to move or even breath" issue, what do you think about the design? It hasn´t been said yet which insect this thing descended from, but to me it looks like a giant isopod (which are not insects).
