| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Its interesting how human language evolves. For instance, english hundreds of years ago was completly different from modern one, and latin has produced many languages such as italian, french, spanish and portuguese. I indeed also found an interesting site about the possible path english might take thousands of years from now: http://www.xibalba.demon.co.uk/jbr/futurese.html |

I find it fascinating how much of English is taken from other languages. American English is interesting in how it uses simplified spelling, and a strange mix of word that have fallen out of use and really weird new ones. Strange how when a language crosses the Atlantic people deicide to muck about with it. |

Yeah, English is mostly loanwords, taking words from Latin (of course), Old Norse, Old French, early Germanic, Greek, etc. Just imagine the language humans speak in the next million years. |

Its probably the most divergent Germanic language, although it still maintains some similarities to the ancestral German. |

Some yes, but it has massive influences from French and loan words from around the world. On QI they speculated it might be like Singlish. |

Just wait until American is a language on its own. Then it will split to Yankee, Southern, Western, Mid, and whatever those Alaskans and Hawaiians speak. |

I wish I could give the public a true picture of the queen as she appeared at her best, but this would be impossible, even had she permitted a photograph to be taken, for her charming play of expression while in conversation, the character and intellect which were then revealed, were only half seen when the face was in repose. -Lilias Underwood when speaking of Empress Myeongseong "I was born in the dark. I went out into the light, and your Majesty, it is my displeasure to inform you that I have returned to the dark. I envision a Seoul of towering buildings filled with Western establishments that will place herself back above the Japanese barbarians. Great things lie ahead for the Kingdom, great things. We must take action, your Majesty, without hesitation, to further modernize this still ancient kingdom."-Min Young-ik to Empress Myeongseong | |

Probably a worse situation will happen with portuguese. The brazillian version is already the most famous one, so if the two main varients became distinct languages then I guess the mainland variety will pretty much be unknown (but then again, I guess it will be more known than checoslovakian or any chinese dialect other than mandarin) |

And what disloyal Canadians do to French is not much better. Right, this whole "New World" idea has been a total waste of time. Europe need to scrap it. At least the Indians know how to speak English. They do it better than we do. |

I find it amusing that documentaries I've seen on the Discovery channel already will often subtitle speakers with a thick Northern England or Scottish accent, even though they're still speaking english. |

I saw one of those on a Steve Irwin program when he was in the UK. Americans must be deaf, thick or the Discovery channel think they are. It was a clear, normal English accent. Perhaps it was because they did not have one of those ridiculous "British" accents Americans think are used. Has anyone else noticed how Americans still refer to the United Kingdom as England? We stopped doing that in the 1930s. |

Can't you just call all of it England? You know UK will never catch on in the outside world. |
