| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I know, I know. Almost everybody in the habitable zone section of this site is working on their own alien world. But this project attempts to have a planet some what similar to Earth populated with truely biazare alien life forms. Well here goes nothing. Evoluitoid III Planetary Data: Parent Star Type: G Length of Day: 22.97 hours Length of Year: 360.5 days Degree Inclination: 21.8 Equatorial Diameter: 12,042 kilometers Polar Diameter: 11,987 kilometers Maximum Distance from Star: 156,000,000 kilometers Minimum Distance from Star: 145,000,000 kilometers Atmospheric Composition: N2 70% O2 29% Percentage of Planet Covered by Water: 21% Evoluitiod 3 has an incredibaly thick biomass which I will hopfully be able to discribe in future posts. At the bottom of this I have included a very crude drawning of the planet. More information about the inhabitants of this planet will be added in future posts. Major Classes: Filter Feeders: The earliest class to appear on the planet, filter feeders are almost entirely aqutic and fill the niche sponges and corals fill on earth. Although they are primitive, they have evolved a variety of traits such as toxic outer skins or strong exoskelatons. Dart Swimmers: Dart swimmers are genrally small, with an arrow shaped body. Their body plan is almost entirerly dedicated to spead to accomodate their active predatory lifestyle. Dart swimmers propel themselves with four jets that spray water under high pressure as well as two ribon like organs on their sides that they udulate in a wave like motion. Dart swimmers are the most abundant creatures in the ocean with many different adaptations to acomidate their various ways of living. Worms: The worms were the first group of organisms to evolve a terrestrial way of life although one order continues to live in the water. the terrestrial species of worms are genrally scavengers, decomposers or predators. because the worms are invertabrates, they have evolved a thick " spine " of muscle to help their soft body hold its shape.the worms also have thick armor or mucous glans to prevent their skin from drying out. Some species of predatory worms have even evolved biological projectile weapons to help hunt their prey. In future post I will describe the " vertabrates " of the planet. alienboy, if you want Latin names for the project, use this site: http://www.archives.nd.edu/cgi-bin/lookdown.pl Just type an English word into the search box and it gives you the Latin translation. Not all words are in there (for example, baleen and prehensile), but it's a great translator nonetheless. |

Tripods Tripods are common creatures on Evoluitoid III and occupy almost every biome. Tripods are generally small creatures because of their cartilaginous skeleton. Most Tripods hunt small creatures or eat plants, although a few can grow up to 10 ft in height and actively hunt prey. The Spiked Tripod Size:1.5ft across, 2ft high General description and behavior: The spiked tripod is a common inhabitant of the mountains and primarilyfeeds on moss and small plants on the sides of cliffs. It is usually camouflaged by its grey spotted skin, but if threatened it will squat and use its spikes for protection. The female spiked tripod lays about 50 eggs every Spring. More on the other species later. |

Another species! The plains tripod Size:1ft across 1.5ft high General description and behavior: The plains tripod is a small herbivore that occupies the plains of Evoluitoid III. Generally very solitary, the plains tripod commonally feeds on small plants and gathers vegitation for to make a nest. The plains tripod is seldom seen because of its striped camouflage to blend in with the tall grasses, which makes up for its lack of defenses. If it encounters a predator it will remain still to blend in with its sorroundings in hopes thatthe predator will not detect it. Since the tripod is often eaten, female plains tripods lay 70 eggs every spring. |

Okay.... With most of the planet being land; would it be easier of a given species to spread; unimpeded by water barriers? Also, I noticed the diff in orbit distances from it's sun. Without water to act as a 'heat-sink'; how wildly will temps vary from season to season(Or night to day?) Also; there is the question of moons. Though without so much water, perhaps they wouldn't be so vital for tides. Though it might effect how the rotation slows down over time. |

Helpful hint: Perhaps the life-forms of the planet could take over the role of 'heat-sink'..... |
