Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I know, I know. Almost everybody in the habitable zone section of this site is working on their own alien world. But this project attempts to have a planet some what similar to Earth populated with truely biazare alien life forms. Well here goes nothing.

Evoluitoid III

Planetary Data:
Parent Star Type: G
Length of Day: 22.97 hours
Length of Year: 360.5 days
Degree Inclination: 21.8
Equatorial Diameter: 12,042 kilometers
Polar Diameter: 11,987 kilometers
Maximum Distance from Star: 156,000,000 kilometers
Minimum Distance from Star: 145,000,000 kilometers
Atmospheric Composition: N2 70% O2 29%
Percentage of Planet Covered by Water: 21%

Evoluitiod 3 has an incredibaly thick biomass which I will hopfully be able to discribe in future posts. At the bottom of this I have included a very crude drawning of the planet. More information about the inhabitants of this planet will be added in future posts.

Major Classes:

Filter Feeders: The earliest class to appear on the planet, filter feeders are almost entirely aqutic and fill the niche sponges and corals fill on earth. Although they are primitive, they have evolved a variety of traits such as toxic outer skins or strong exoskelatons.

Dart Swimmers: Dart swimmers are genrally small, with an arrow shaped body. Their body plan is almost entirerly dedicated to spead to accomodate their active predatory lifestyle. Dart swimmers propel themselves with four jets that spray water under high pressure as well as two ribon like organs on their sides that they udulate in a wave like motion. Dart swimmers are the most abundant creatures in the ocean with many different adaptations to acomidate their various ways of living.

Worms: The worms were the first group of organisms to evolve a terrestrial way of life although one order continues to live in the water. the terrestrial species of worms are genrally scavengers, decomposers or predators. because the worms are invertabrates, they have evolved a thick " spine " of muscle to help their soft body hold its shape.the worms also have thick armor or mucous glans to prevent their skin from drying out. Some species of predatory worms have even evolved biological projectile weapons to help hunt their prey.

In future post I will describe the " vertabrates " of the planet.

Cool idea, I didn't even see it at first. It's a shame that the good topics are put aside (though they should be updated more frequently) for other topics that have nothing to do with SE, I notice the general topic section is always being responded to, if you wanna talk about current events, that's fine but this is the Speculative Evolution forum, so please back on "topic" :D If Proletarian were here this wouldn't be going on ;) Sorry it had to be said
Alienboy, awesome concept, I more people respond to this topic. :)

The vertabrate like creatures of evoluitiod III.

The vertabrate like organisms evolved from an order of dartswimmers with six large padles that lived with the shallow areas of the ocean. Because of having six paddels all vertabrate like animals have a six limbed body. Now for the major classes of vertabrate like creatures.

The Prong Jaws.
The Prong Jaws continue to use a radially semetrical mouth to break down food. These creatures have a small radially semetrical mouth surounded by large mandibles that they as a weapon or as an extra grinder. Hopefully I will be able to upload a picture to better explain this.

The Avians.
The Avians are one of the few groups of animals that not only fly but posess a pair of eyes. The Avains have modified the jets of the dartswimmers they evovled from into a biological jet that uses the gas from their digestive processes to burn as a fuel providing thrust. Many Avains have a large ecolocating organ that they use as a form of radar.

Vertical Jaws.
I don't have a lot to say about this group other than the fact that they have jaws similar to vertabrates on Earth.

I will post pictures of actual speices and discriptions of the creatures shortly.

So this creture once had several legs with many digits, but a few digits became legs and others became spikes?

That creature seems to have spikes all over his limbs that must be derived from digits.

The Arrowtounge's spikes are used for deffensive purposes similar to a thorny devil's spikes. The spikes almost do look like they evolved from extra digits, don't they?

A little more infromation on the Arrow Tongue.

Speices: The Common Arrow Tongue.
Size:4-7 feet high, 15-16 feet long including tail.
General discription and behavior: The Arrow Tongue is one of the Desert's top predatores and can be found in almost every region. The Common Arrow Tongue is a solitary hunter that uses is 30 foot long tongue to kill it's prey. The creature uses its 2 strong legs to chase after herbavores and then impales them with its long tongue before riping into the creatures carcass with its sharp claws. The Common Arrow Tongue is one the most abundant species in its family although other species exist. Its remarkable tongue has an incredibly sharp point ( some species' tongues are even capable of secreteing poison ) capable of penentrating some of the thickest hides of its prey. The long sail running down the Arrow Tongues back is used for heat dissipation in the hot desert sun. The Arrow Tongue usually lives for 15 years but it only mates once in its life. Female Arrow Tongues can lay 2-5 eggs but it is unlikeli they all reach adulthood.

hmmm.... a name other than arrowtounge would be nice, as it has already been used...

other than that, I think this project may have potential, if more people look into it.

would you like me to draw anything?
because there are an infinite number of alternate realities, withen them an infinite ammount of infinite things are possible... infinitly.

Zyfer: I would like to add latin names but I don't know any latin.

Major Biomes:

Rainforest: The rainforest is by far the largest biome and covers 35% of Evoluitiod III's surface. Incredibaly rich in biodeversity, the rainforest is home to a numerous amount of species including tree-like plants reaching heights of 335ft.

The Ocean: Covering 19% of the surface, The ocean is the aftermath of a large meteor impact.
Like Earth, the first life on the planet evolved in the water. Unlike Earth the majority of the Ocean is populated by strange sonar-using organisms that propel themselves at high speeds using jets of water.

The Desert: The desert is the 2nd largest biome on the planet and is know for its scalding temperatures and GIANT carnivorous armoured worms.

More info coming soon.

Arrowtongue is an Expedition creature. For a better name, how about Spearhead?

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.
