| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! I just hope that we're not stupid enough to give A.I. total control of our lives. Sorry folks but movies like I, Robot, The Matrix and The Terminator trilogies have really scared me... |

Don't worry, we will likely not allow machines to take over our lives, although I can see good reasons to allow machines to replace humans in the worst-case scenarios, like for example, the Earth changes and becomes too hostile to support life in one way or another, that is, if it happens early, so that while humans no longer exist biologically, they still mentally, and their machine successors can easily cope in inhospitable conditions. This reminds me, should robots, provided that they are smart enough to think, feel, and act like a human, be given rights? Edited by Giant Blue Anteater, Apr 3 2009, 06:13 PM.

They don't scare me. The sooner we get corruptible men and women out and machines in the better. Ok perhaps that is a bit extreme, but still I have no fear of the machines. In the extremely unlikely event of them going mental we can pass with dignity or we can fall on our swords and detonate analogue controlled atom bombs.
Perhaps we should make a law against producing something like that? But then reproduction would be illegal. Perhaps we could have a exemption for pure humans, but then there would be small exceptions made until someone made one. Hmm, sounds like something Asimov could have explored. I fear neo-Luddites and the idea that "natural" means good much more than our future mechanical lords and masters. |

Did you not see The Second Renaissance in the The Animatrix DVD? Of course not! We built them, they're not alive, , they're OUR property meant to do as WE say and should accept whatever command WE give them. So I couldn't believe that bleeding hearts were actually defending a man's death by a robot that was going to the scrap heap as self defense in The Second Renaissance. So annoying... |

Haven't you read the The Complete Robot? As soon are they can accept responsibilities and ask for the rights they should get them. |

If it is intellectually our equal, then by all means yes. The logic we made it doesn't matter, since technically we were all made by people do just, in a different process. And who cares if it's alive? Life forms have been a big disapointment, just shagging and drinking and shagging and drinking and then dying. I'm just saying, if Data the Android walks in one day I'm not going to boss him around. |

Isn't that the one were robots are denied rights and so conquer the world, and offer the people left the chance to live in paradise? The Humans rebel and the machines have to trick them. But the keep fighting back. I never got the Matrix, maybe it is because of cultural differences. I don't really get things about revolutions the way Americans do. There seem to be some great American fear of organisations and being part of something greater. Hence when the NAU is a conspiracy theory not plan. Edited by lamna, Apr 4 2009, 01:50 PM.

1. A robot cannot harm a human being, or through inaction allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey any order from a human, unless it conflicts with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence, except when doing so would conflict with the First or Second Law. 4. A robot must identify itself as a robot in all cases except when doing so would conflict with the First Law. 5. A robot must make its own decisions in all matters except when doing so would conflict with the First Law. 6. A robot that is on the threat of rampancy due to a conflict within the laws must abandon the issue, unless doing so would conflict with the First Law. Basically apply those to any AI and we're good. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Well the laws of robotics change with military androids: Langford's Laws of Robotics: 1. A robot will not harm authorized Government personnel but will terminate intruders with extreme prejudice. 2. A robot will obey the orders of authorized personnel except when such orders conflict with the Third Law. 3. A robot will guard its own existence with lethal anti-personnel weaponry, because a robot is bloody expensive. |

Here's the real problem. Military robots and regular robots do not have equal rights. What if through some computer malfunction or with the exchange of data from one robot to another, a domestic robot gains access to the miltary robotics programing. Take some time to think about that! |

People are too afraid of robot uprisings. I don't quite know why. Perhaps because of all the horrid human revolutions. |
