Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

So Asprea is some 200 million years into the future, with the continents once again rejoining to create a single massive supercontinent (Called Pangea Ultima by scientists). There has been at least two mass extinctions from now until then, though I haven't truly thought out the reasons behind these yet.

Either way, almost all life now is unrecognizable from the earth as we know it. The animals have no obvious ancestors as the extinctions (whatever they were) left nothing but the smallest of the small alive.

One of the extinctions nearly cleaned out the oceans for a couple million years and while sanitary drinking water is once again available there are still a few locations that are horribly irradiated.

Also, the oxygen is very, very high and nearly all animals have so called blue blood. Rather than their blood containing hemoglobin (which is what makes blood red) it instead contains hemocyanin, which is most commonly found in molluscs and anthropods in the present time. This is because hemocyanin doesn't bind properly with oxygen and so offers only 1/4 of the oxygen hemoglobin does. However, due to the extremely high oxygen levels, animals have evolved with the hemocyanin protein instead because that high of an oxygen concentration would otherwise make life other than molluscs and anthropods impossible.

Because of the two great extinctions and the long period of time from now until then, the evolutionary ancestors of the animals alive in Asprea some 200 million years into the future are unknown. That and the sentient race alive in Asprea has no idea homo sapien sapiens ever existed, as all existence of them has been wiped out or obliterated into something unrecognizable. After all, it has been over 200 million years and they aren't exactly interested in paleontology as they are still a fairly new and primitive race.

New animals have evolved to fill the niches, and the variety and new evolutionary paths are astounding.

That's the very basics, and more will be revealed once I get home to my scanner, but enjoy this small peek so far :)

@ Ianma - Yeah, I think the white tails would stay the same, if not become longer and bushier, and their ears would be used to impress the opposite gender. Sort of like Birds of Paradise have elaborate markings and displays, so would these guys with their ears.

@ Zypher - No worries, I've been busy as well, and I don't see that ending anytime soon. I'm going to try and keep things active, but no promises. So for now I think I'll fly mostly solo, but thank you for your contributions :)

Don't rabbit tails curl so the tip points up? You could have them hold the tail aloft like warthogs.

Yeah, hence why these future rabbits would have tails that almost looked like a squirrels, because with them being bigger and bushier, and still pointing up, they'd most likely lay along the animals spine.

...That reminds me of that freaking skunk pokemon though. Ah well, that's what I'm thinking, so hopefully that clears it up! :)

Hope you keep up this project!

I may need to have a look at the lifeforms, i'll catch up later.

Mikr scanned the bare expanse of land all around him, keeping a grain of his awareness reserved for the beast he was seated on. He had been assured that the large bird would follow his directions docilely, but being new to the higher class, he rather didn't feel like being made an example of so early in his recruitment. Trained for this purpose or not, his kind had their own legs to run on, and he wasn't sure he agreed with using the hussanki birds for steeds.

Granted, it was certainly nice to be able to travel for longer periods of time. Especially when all he wanted was to get to somewhere with some actual life. The barren lands he traveled through stretched on for miles and miles, devastated by the drought.

It was with sadness that he watched as they passed yet another dead tree, its spindly limbs twisted and curled upon itself as though it had turned on itself for nourishment.

Such was normal in the Deadlands.

This is my entry for Mind-shade's monthly challenge, which was to create a new sort of transportation for our respective created worlds.

The rider is a scout, as the men of the sindjh race are too small and weak to fight (in the eyes of their larger and more muscular women), and thus are reserved as messengers for the most part.

The bird is a male hussanki, and is a very new development in my world. Riding any animal is, as sindjh are quite capable of running on their own four legs. However, a few sindjh grew up with the sport of kee riding, which is capturing the antelope-like beasts and then riding them, so it's not too uncommon. Riding a hussanki, on the other hand, is reserved only for those of the (self-proclaimed) higher class, or the clothes wearers, as the rest of society calls them - when they're being polite anyways. Riding a hussanki is frowned upon because they need gear, otherwise it is impossible to stay on, let along steer them. They're very stupid birds, however, and are easily broken.

Very nice drawing and text.

What animals do they usually use?

If the women are prevalent, is there a 'council' or something controlling each tribe?

Thanks!

The unclothed sindjh, called commoners or lower class by the higher class, don't ride the wildlife if they can help it. As I mentioned above, they do ride kee for sport, but not to actually get from one place to another.

Then there are the sindjh who have keshdjat companions. Very few sindjh are partners with these animals, and thus very few can understand their language and know that they are sentient. However, those who the keshdjat have chosen are allowed to ride them in dire circumstances, the keshdjat being faster and having more endurance.

The higher class, however, have no such qualms of using animals in such a way. They do ride kee and hussanki, and those with keshdjat companions frequently ride them. They're also more likely to own beasts of burden then the lower class.

Luckily for the animals of Asprea, the other sentient race, the sithra, are too large to ride anything, and too proud to act as steeds themselves. However, I can see chariots or wagons eventually being built to cart around the higher class members too fat and lazy, or too comfortable with their 'higher' status to walk.

And the sindjh have a matriarch to lead their groups. The title is earned by the strongest, most battle-worthy female. She takes complete responsibility of her group, and the other females are expected to act as her bodyguards and soldiers. Basically, the sindjh have reversed gender roles. The women are the protectors, and the men the providers.

That's modern society then. :P

So clothes symbolise status. Surely, from all this, the higher classses would be more likely to survive and reproduce, so there would be fewer lower- than higher-class critters?

Not really, because those that started wearing clothes are also trying to change the way things are run. This higher class isn't made up of just sindjh, but also of keshdjat, and the sithra race as well. Basically, it's a huge mess of races, and it's causing the loss of individual culture and traditions. The higher class believe themselves better then the commoners, and thus force others to do their bidding rather then doing it themselves. This leads to overweight, lazy, and power hungry leaders. The higher class don't have enough power to start an all out war, but they are slowly and steadily finding and forcibly converting groups to the cause.

So the self-proclaimed higher class is actually the underdog of society. They're sort of like the Klu Klux Klan of this day and age, believing that they are the only ones fit to live.

That they were clothing is more symbolic, as even wearing a band of leather around the arm counts as clothing, so it's not even to hide nudity as it is in our society.

Oh, ok. So they're more like the Mayan priestly class.

I really like this project. Did you ever write descriptions for cyants and mrachi?

So, is it male sindjh or female sindjh who do most of the childcare? I assume they're viviparous and they lactate (Mikr looks like a mammal), but it should be theoretically possible for males to lactate if you want them to.

It might be fun to write a system where the women do the fighting, the politics, and the childcare, and men do everything else (farming, cleaning, building...)
My speculative dinosaur project. With lots of fluff, parental care and mammalian-level intelligence, and the odd sophont.
