Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

What if some jawless fish adapted to land life and evolved an alternative to jaws? What practical alternatives to jaws can you think of, and if they radiated into niches comparable to our land vertebrates what would be some of the major differences be?
Sorry Link, I don't give credit. Come back when you're a little...MMMMMM...Richer.

I imagine a pitch would play a large part. Perhaps each individual voice has its own 'starting' pitch, which they use to start a sentence, then sound is developed from there?

Get your mind out of the gutter.

That does present another interesting question, though. Without jaws, things like speech and sounds would have to evolve differently...
Very diferently.

for the whole urine dealy i would imagine that they would just evolve very large bladders as leaving a trail of liquid waste is a bad choice when trying to avoid predators.

a culture that is very heavily based around drinks would be interesting... a land of winos... like France...

as for vocals the nostrils could have their shapes changed to make different noises like lips, and the creature can still have vocal chords, i think having the breathing system connected to the mouth would still be useful, you can stick your mouth out of the water and breath if your nostrils are underwater... for the noises that tongues make i can't really think of anything, except some kind of nostril tongue... but then it's not the most important thing when making a language...
Oh Fine.

Oh hi you! Why don't you go check out the finery that is SGP??

I like the idea of very dexterous, lipped nostrils!

It sounds both very weird and very cool. And I suppose it' possible. lots of animals have mobile nostrils they can open and close.

Erm... Okay...
Feeder tubes could open and close like lips, and air forced through would make a sound! And we like that.(me and my dragons, who are now working on a monument to raccoon ignorance)
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

My own alien world without jaws, for anybody who's interested.

Also, living flamethrowers seems like a great idea...untill a draught season. FWOOSH.

Cool I'll have to check that out.

And flame-throwers are not all that great. Probably the best use I can think for one is to flush out/kill prey in a burrow.

They could use them to power jump.

But otherwise, they don't have the range or accuracy.

Unless they were in some way attached to the pupil, and fired off exactly where the animal was looking...

flamethrowers on animals i would imagine would serve as a defense rather than a weapon of hunting, although burning substances to produce smoke that suffocates prey or drives away bees from their hive would be interesting...

For jawless land predators, the image of some of Nemo-Ramjet's skethes comes to mind... http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6zauHO1pJ1k/SaD0ivcD3DI/AAAAAAAAAZo/RRdfKpS19t8/s1600-h/nemo+ramjet-+sketches19_02.gif
