| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. What if some jawless fish adapted to land life and evolved an alternative to jaws? What practical alternatives to jaws can you think of, and if they radiated into niches comparable to our land vertebrates what would be some of the major differences be? |

Maybe plants would evolve giant flowers, that way macroherbivores could pollinate plants while they ate. ![]() agatharights just likes the idea of a world filled with GIANT flowers. |

It's a Sesshoun. I like the characters I play (it takes place on a mixed-species space cruiser) I have some other sketches of creatures from their planet, but not much so far. They're also big muthas. Nine foot for a young adult's average. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/yellowdrakex/sesshounmalefemale.jpg The link is a basic male/female sketch. I took the peacock route. Woo woo |

Well they are just wonderful looking. I love that the gunslinger has his pinkie out. No need to be uncouth when killing someone. The glasses are cool too. You should put these on DA. |

That's not a pinky. If you look at the hands, it's actually the second thumb. Their hand configuration goes thumb-finger-finger-thumb. It's interesting, because most creatures on the planet that are related to them either have cloven hooves in a similar formation, or bird-like gripping claws, two back, two forwards.

About as useful as thumb-finger-finger-finger-finger I guess. It's not in the biology of the hand so much as how one uses it. Iitia up there (my character) is a surgeon, after all. |

It probably would be about as useful. Now I thing about it, those hands are kind of like the ones the Elites from Halo have. |

It is. Moving back on-topic.... I imagine a jawless world would have a lot more lamprey-like parasites. Lots of things to latch on. Ew. |

Back, I'm Baron of this site I can do what I like. But you are correct. It might have, perhaps the predators would just pin prey down and suck some blood but leave the herbivore to recover so they and feed again later. Edited by lamna, Sep 21 2009, 05:01 PM.

Well, I imagine multiple-time feeders would be more frequent. But a pack of small, sharp-tongued creatures could easily drain a large herbivore dry... |

Well I expect farming would become very common on such a world. The herbivores could evolve defences like the Coca plant has, giving the predator a buzz and make it feel full so it wanders off leaving the animal alone. Of course when the world gets industrialized the poor animals might get dried and refined for use as a recreational drug. |

Well, when you start bringing advancements in culture, such as farming or society into it, it becomes a whole new ball game. The other big problem is that more often than not, liquid diets require you to eat a lot more than a solid-food diet, because there's so much water for your system to work through. This means that more time would have to be devoted to feeding, even if digestion would be easier. |
