Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

What if some jawless fish adapted to land life and evolved an alternative to jaws? What practical alternatives to jaws can you think of, and if they radiated into niches comparable to our land vertebrates what would be some of the major differences be?
Sorry Link, I don't give credit. Come back when you're a little...MMMMMM...Richer.

The jawless fish didn't have limbs, at least like ours, did they? So limbs and such like ours (lizards, horses, bats, etc.) are out of the question...and many had armor right?

well this concept is amazing i like the art that was just done and i hope too see more.

what if the land forms evolved from a an armored sting ray like form without jaws, this would give the initial animals of the land 2 limbs plus a tail which might be able too push them across the ground. this scenario might actually force the tails too form into an extra limb and the 2 fins of this animal would most likely have alot more bones in different positions than our limbs or at least at first the hands might become more like ours but i doubt the arms will ever be the same.

I did a few doodles last night whilst watching a programme about Darwin and I thought I'd post them (despite them all looking a little bit like cyborg anteaters!)

The first image was just a preliminary doodle of a land-based jawless vertebrate which uses a long sticky tongue to feed and secrets a poisonous sticky solution similar to that made by the jawless hagfish.

The next doodle was a larger arboreal form that feeds of arthropods using a barb tipped tongue, somewhere between a chameleon and a dartfish.

I also drew a few filter-feeding species and a basic cladogram which I might post.

(Edit: Apologies for the many posts, the last one was accidental and I can't seem to be able to delete it!)

I like the second one a lot. can I take one home if I promise to feed it and take it walkies?

Both the anteater and robotic elements were rather unintentional, oh well anyone willing to show me up with some more designs? :p

Maybe something like this could evolve.

EDIT:

Sorry I accidentally copy and pasted that last thing from a previous post.

Obviously the wheel in it's mouth wouldn't be able to rotate freely, but maybe it could be wound up on elastic tendons by powerful muscles like a rubber band and then released, resulting a lethal Buzz-Saw effect.

Perhaps they'd have a specialized tongue/feeding tube for liquefying and absorbing prey, not unlike Wayne Barlowe's Arrowtongue from Expedition.

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

The way I think the creatures would evolve is maybe a probuscus like tongue being used as both a weapon for killing and a mouth instead of jaws.
