| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Being new to the site I havn't gotten to know anyone yet, but I was wondering if there are any artists here who would be interested in starting a collaborative-type evolution project. I would like to begin a project in the same vein as sagan 4, although with a few differences in format. A few years ago I ran a shortlived project of this kind on the Sporeum forums, unfortunately it failed due to time constraints suffered by some of the artists on the project. However, over the last six months or so I have been working on a format that would be less reliant on regular artistic submissions by artists and would be able to continue to run regardless. If there are any talented artists here at the Speculative Evolution forums who are interested in being a part of this kind of project, please reply here or PM me. Thanks. |

Actually, way things are turning out I'm not going to have enough time. Some of my own projects have gone on pause so I'm afraid I won't have enough time for a group project. Sorry Viridian. |

I will still draw if you'd have me, although there may be times in which I would be too busy... can we get more complex yet? |

Gah, I'm very interested but at the moment I can't do free art. Which really, really sucks because this project sounds incredibly fun :( |

Still interested, but schoolwork is slowly piling up, I'll do my best anyway. It would help if I knew with more detail what to do, like which of my sketches I should redo and improve in colour. If you want all of them it may take a while. Also, I'm not very knowledgeable in biology, so if anybody has any ideas for a drawing of mine, or sees any frivoulous improbabilities, please tell me. |

@Kaykay: That's ok, I understand. If you find yourself with more free time later on feel free to rejoin the project. @Everyone else: Alright, I'm having trouble finding time to work on this at the moment, but I'd still like to continue. Perhaps we could start from a more advanced point? If you're all amicable to that idea then I could put together a basic foodweb for a early devonian level of advancement. I'm probably not going to be able to submit too many images but I can certainly come up with concepts. |

Hey Vir, how about the concepts we submitted before must be the base for these new creatures? Pick which ones get nuked and which ones get evolved... that kinda thing. |

@CarrionTrooper: Yeah, I suppose we could do that... But I think I'd prefer to start at a more advanced stage. I'v spent a few hours puting together a group of kingdoms that could form the basis of life on Nimbus. Echinophytes – Sponge-like Photosynthetic organisms with a motile juvenile form. Juvenile echinophytes “bud off” from the parent, then travel across the seafloor to find an optimal place to grow. They are covered in sharp thorns to deter predators and therefore resemble urchins of earth. Adult echinophytes are green sponge-like plant analogues. They are covered in dull thorny protrusions which are a vestige of the spines found on their juvenile form. Vermizoa – Soft bodied worm-like animals. Nimbusian worm analogues, this kingdom includes the 10m long “Intestine Worms”, as well as many parasitic species. Some species have adapted to life on land where they feed on the bacterial “Slimestacks” and early land dwelling mycophytes. Podazoa – Multi-legged animals resembling Tardigrades. Podazoa evolved from tiny twelve legged tardigrade-like organisms. This has become a highly successful and diverse kingdom that includes fish analogues and is beginning to develop insect/amphibian analogues. Cytozoa – Shapeless slime animals. These are strange macroscopic, yet single-celled organisms. They are primarily detritivores yet most species will feed on small vermizoans or podazoans if given the chance. Some species produce a calcite shell to protect their extremely soft jelly-like bodies. Cytozoans reproduce by a process of generating thousands of genetically identical juveniles within their own bodies then bursting to release all their offspring at once. The process invariably kills the adult. Mycophytes – Moss-like fungus-plants. Mycophytes are common in reefs and are the first photosynthetic organisms to have colonized the land. The land species are currently confined to areas with high levels of moisture, such as coasts, rivers and swamps. Mycophytes sometimes resemble a fibrous green fuzz or slime that covers sun-lit surfaces, often attaching themselves to the lower branches of living or dead adult echinophytes. Most species produce transparent fluid-filled orbs that contain their spores. Eumycea – True fungus analogues. These fungus-like organisms usually feed on decaying organic matter, or are parasitic. Let me know what you think... |

That'd be great CarrionTrooper, hopefully we can entice back some of the people who were interested before... I think I'l change the format somewhat too... I'l post what I decide on that front once I've thought about it some more... Oh, and does anyone here have any experience at starting/hosting forums for this kind of thing? |
