Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Registration is free and instantaneous.

Being new to the site I havn't gotten to know anyone yet, but I was wondering if there are any artists here who would be interested in starting a collaborative-type evolution project.

I would like to begin a project in the same vein as sagan 4, although with a few differences in format.

A few years ago I ran a shortlived project of this kind on the Sporeum forums, unfortunately it failed due to time constraints suffered by some of the artists on the project.

However, over the last six months or so I have been working on a format that would be less reliant on regular artistic submissions by artists and would be able to continue to run regardless.

If there are any talented artists here at the Speculative Evolution forums who are interested in being a part of this kind of project, please reply here or PM me.

Thanks.

@canis:
Not so much of a hindrance if
1) the filters are kinda sticky
2) the nozzle is pointed another way when they feed
3) the creature time their jet bursts precisely when the creature's not feeding.

Meh, you could still make one, maybe different kingdom/order altogether. Life's still pretty malleable in this state.

I have updated my comments on deviantart to include more detailed descriptions of my creatures.

And I have a question: Are we now supposed to just carry on a do coloured drawings or are there supposed to be some descisions on what creatures get picked to go on?

The32ndpie: how does the Surface Algae obtain energy and nutrients? Overall, I like the concepts. They just needed a bit more info ("pencil" and "More concepts for Nimbus" just don't cut it for me).

CarrionTrooper: I think shutting it off while feeding is going to be the best method.

Viridian: will you be setting up a forum for this sometime in the future?

Canis Lupis: I just said I had edited the descriptions of my drawings. If you see them again you'll see lengthier descriptions just below the pictures http://the32ndpie.deviantart.com/art/Nimbus-Concepts-002-110466564 But there's one thing I'm not sure about: how do algae feed normally, is it photosynthesis or is it something else?

Oh, I know. I was referring to the fact that I was happy that you added more to the description.

Perhaps CarrionTrooper's drifter could use it's jet in reverse to suck in plankton and oxygenated water, then either eject it slowly through gills on it's sides or if neccessary it could push it through the jet to escape from predators. The only problem with that of couse would be that there are no predators yet... So why does it need the jet?

@Canis: I intend to start a "Nimbus Project Discussion" thread and a "Nimbus Project Submissions" thread at some stage. I didn't want to jump the gun though so I've held off. Perhaps it's time I made them?

Also, I'm not sure what the protocol for creating new sub-forums is. Can I create one myself or do I need to get a mod to do it for me?

@32nd: I'm not sure what should be done about the submissions. I'm liking a lot of the species I've seen so far, but without seeing them in colour it's hard to choose which ones are best. I may, in the end, choose to include all of them.

@viridian:
The movement isn't as fast as a squid would be... Think of an above-average speed jellyfish. It helps them go places where there's more food. And I approve of your idea of it using it in reverse, to get more food stuck to its tentacle/delivered straight to its mouth... Maybe it's how it began, at first, then it realized that it could be used to propel itself (earlier version uses wave motion on its side)...

Viridian: might be a good idea to build your own forum. Only admins can set up sub-forums, and Proletarian does not like to set up sub-forums for generation by generation projects.

Zypher: I'm not sure. When does it end?

Hi everyone! Sorry I havn't been around for a while, I've been snowed under at work.

Ok, Canis says: "Proletarian does not like to set up sub-forums for generation by generation projects", so do we want to continue with this project in the format I originaly intended or should we change the way it works so that we can continue it here?

Also, who is still interested in being involved?

I'm still interested.

We can still talk about it here, but if you want a forum or sub-forum format for this, we'll have to start our own forum.
