| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Being new to the site I havn't gotten to know anyone yet, but I was wondering if there are any artists here who would be interested in starting a collaborative-type evolution project. I would like to begin a project in the same vein as sagan 4, although with a few differences in format. A few years ago I ran a shortlived project of this kind on the Sporeum forums, unfortunately it failed due to time constraints suffered by some of the artists on the project. However, over the last six months or so I have been working on a format that would be less reliant on regular artistic submissions by artists and would be able to continue to run regardless. If there are any talented artists here at the Speculative Evolution forums who are interested in being a part of this kind of project, please reply here or PM me. Thanks. |

@Zypher: Great! Sounds like you're set. @Rodlox: You could do both, that'd be really helpfull actually. Erm, DA = DeviantArt I assume? Is your username Rodlox there too? @Kaykay: It's alright if you need to take your time. I expect we wont get all the niches done for about a week. My own submissions are likely to take a couple of days. |

Just select any three of the orgamisms on my list (except the crawling scavengers and photosynth colonies) and create images and descriptions of them. Then PM them to me so I can look them over. |

I think Zypher is doing one for Drifting feeders, but feel free to submit one for that family as well. If they're both good there's no reason why both couldn't exist. It's a big planet after all... with a lot of plankton. |

haha, I finished mine! yes, I did a drifter and a worm type thing... boh have tenticles protruding from a fleshy arm above thier mouth to collect food... the drifter has hair covered appendages used for sifting the water, and any food that gets caught in the haird is consumed... the worm has small spikes at the ends of it's appendages to lacth onto other organisms to hitch a ride, and usualy feeds by cacthing organic particles in it's tentcles. I won't be able to upload 'em untill tomorow... |

I've made some drawings in plain pencil for now, but my printer doesn't seem to want to scan at the moment. I've made a drifting feeder, a fixed feeder, and surface algae. Though I'm not too clear on the general size of lifeforms, so I've made two drifting feeders. |

You'd be best providing the link, you can't search for other artists on deviant art for some stupid reason. I had to friend you to find you. (don't worry, I won't de-friend you )(I forgot to post my own) http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g278/Magdaw/alienparasite.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g278/Magdaw/alienfungus.jpg Edited by KayKay, Jan 20 2009, 03:38 PM.

I'm going to go ahead and use my advisor position: KayKay: good idea with the parasites. Would the larva be microscopic? It would probably better if the larva were. Fungus is also a good idea. What do they eat? Maybe they could be derived from rock-eating bacteria, still eating rocks? Zypher: love the idea. Maybe you could eliminate the legs (reason being: I think it's a bit early in Nimbus's evolution to have limbed creatures)? You can add them back in later generations. Those are just suggestions. It's really up to Viridian. |

I was hoping they could be microscopic yes. I wasn't sure what the fungi ate yet... I was thinking of them being able to grow within its food source so perhaps detritus or dead macroscopic organisms. I don't know how much being rock-eating would slow down their growth rate, but they are very small and simple so it is possible. Yeah, I'm really not sure. |
