Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

This technology, if improved and perfected, will allow a person to see the physical activity of a person's brain and subsequently read that activity; effectively reading their thoughts, given you know what the activity means. Interesting stuff, also, interesting new forum. I like it.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

Interesting, but from what I seem to get is that you have to think of specific thoughts for the computer to identify them. Doesn't seem like it can completely read minds, but just instead recognize brain movements and areas when one thinks of a certain object. Though still amazing seems like it is just one step from actually mind reading.
I wish I could give the public a true picture of the queen as she appeared at her best, but this would be impossible, even had she permitted a photograph to be taken, for her charming play of expression while in conversation, the character and intellect which were then revealed, were only half seen when the face was in repose. -Lilias Underwood when speaking of Empress Myeongseong

"I was born in the dark. I went out into the light, and your Majesty, it is my displeasure to inform you that I have returned to the dark. I envision a Seoul of towering buildings filled with Western establishments that will place herself back above the Japanese barbarians. Great things lie ahead for the Kingdom, great things. We must take action, your Majesty, without hesitation, to further modernize this still ancient kingdom."-Min Young-ik to Empress Myeongseong

Great, once this is complete mind reading people who are thinking about "naughty things" will have the whole world see their thoughts.

If this technology is further developed, advanced, perfected, perhaps can even be used from a distance, to read those who do not volunteer to be read...

There is little need for mind reading. It could have a few marginal uses to aid in communication for those who cannot communicate by conventional means. But what I'm worried about is surveillance. It's arguable whether or not surveillance is a good cause, but no doubt if the technology became available for it, that's how it would be used.

People would be forced to limit their thoughts, thus limit independent thought and personal thought exploration, imagination, etc because who knows who might be tapping in? Who knows which thoughts can be used against you?

Again, I hope this remains entirely voluntary, and it's not developed for use on a mass scale.

I don't think governments should fund mind readin research- we all have a right to privacy. And i don't want people knowing what i'm thinking- for all our sakes.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

They wouldn't send you to the funny farm I guess. They'd drop you into a volcano.

No, Only Xenu does that and only when overpopulation is a problem

When I was younger I imagined a machine like this used for making movies. You could video your fantasy.

Yes, it's not at all like this tech, not really, and probably impossible, but it would be awesome.

But what of the difference between different people's brains?

Mdern lie detectors are about as useful as making an informed guess. There's still a long way to go, and that's how i like it.
