One could look back over the years at the long list of gimmicks that Marvel has come up with and none really stands the test of time and hard to top like what I am going to talk about. If you really consider it, in relation to all of the other things that Marvel (and DC to a degree) has done, nothing really endures as much as this. What do I mean? Simple…take some of the best stories since the early 80’s til now and think of which one or ones are STILL being told and retold and has an effect on the Marvel Universe. Let’s see….hmmm… In the past 20 or so years Dark Phoenix Saga – If the X men were off the map before…they were on after this… The Return of Bucky…this may actually rank up there as the effect it’s having now is Bucky replacing the role of Steve Rogers. Death of Professor X and Captain Marvel – well in Bucky’s case as we have seen that no one stays dead for long… The Clone Saga – Hot Mess…nuff said…but if you are in the direction of Spiderman as my subject matter… Telling of Wolverine’s Origins – Thank you Marvel now please stop! Civil War – Too soon to tell…. So what the heck am I talking about? What marvel gimmick could have possibly lasted so long? The gimmick would be the Black suit which became Venom. Crazy? Sure…but…think about it. The suit made its debut in Secret Wars 8 and in Amazing Spiderman 252 (both I still have to this day…heh!) and many of us at that time was hoped and prayed that Marvel would keep this suit….because it was COOL. I mean, this suit would have allowed Peter Parker to become the ‘ultramodern’ superhero…a suit that becomes what he wants on command, (no more looking for places to change like Superman too…), never ran out of webbing (this influence is still seen in Ultimate Spiderman), could heal itself and hold equipment. And face it, the red and blue tights at that time were getting a bit corny so we could stand for change. The rest can be read here in my blog. If you disagree...then sure...give me your opinion on Marvel's best story gimmick has been. Edited by afroloq, Sep 9 2008, 01:50 PM.
