No fancy pictures in this one, sorry. Simple explanations and directions for your learning pleasure or consternation. We do assume you know how to make new chat windows and reassign channels.

How To: Use Chat Channels
In this edition of How To: we will address the use of Chat Channels. This thread should help you with the following.

  • Joining Channels
  • Leaving Channels
  • Autojoining Channels
  • Changing your Autojoined Channels
  • Listing the Channels you are currently in
  • Listing the members of a specific Channel
  • Speaking directly to a Channel from any window

The "Join" function.
If you have a channel you only need for a single foray into the world of Norrath, use the /join function. If, for example, you are on an alt who is not in guild but you don't want them always in channel, use "/join Darkheart" to enter the guild's channel once. Listing the members will tell you who is on and you can ask for information, advice, help, or a group through this channel before you log off. As I said, useful for single needs or single events.

The "Leave" function.
Just like /join, you can use "/leave" to exit a channel for a single session. If you normally autojoin a channel, you can use this function to drop out of it if you don't like what is being said. (good for argument days in General chat) This is also how you will leave a channel when done with an event. For example, "/leave DarkRAID" at the end of a raid drops you from that channel until the next time you need it or, if it's an auto, the next time you log on to that toon.

The "Autojoin" function.
This function will set which channels you join every time you load that character into the world, in the order you list them. Changing this order could mess with your filtering. Example:
Quote:

/autojoin General:1, Paladin:1, Darkheart
As I have my "Autojoin General Channels" option turned off (in the Options menu) I use this function to remain in the only 2 General channels that matter to me, and the one specific channel for our guild. Yes I am already in it and have been for a week. Notice how the channels are separated by commas? This tells the game "new channel:password up next!" so it can add you to more than one.

Changing your Autojoined Channels
Say you joined the above channels but then started raiding a lot. You may decide to simply Autojoin your class' functionary Channel.
Quote:

/autojoin General:1, Paladin:1, Darkheart, Darktank:aggrogank
Keep in mind that the game "filters" channels by order, not name. If you use the order above and then add another channel before "General:1" like in the following example, it will shift your channels around to match where that number goes.
Quote:

/autojoin Darkheart, Darktank:aggrogank, DarkRAID:DKP, General:1, Paladin:1
You would suddenly find that where General and Paladin had been, Darkheart and Darktank would now be. The window you had Darkheart (and?) Darktank going to would now have DarkRAID and General, and Paladin would probably be sitting in your combat window now. It's all based on the order in which you add new channels. (No, neither of those other channels exist, lol)
NOTE: When adding new or removing old autojoin channels, you have to include all channels in the order you wish them to exist. You don't simply /autojoin one channel at a time, it removes the rest.

The "List" function.
This function actually has two uses. If you simply type /list it will tell you exactly which channels you are in at the time. This response falls under the Filter of "Other" so if this goes to your melee statistics window, don't use it in combat or reassign Filters > Other to a different window. For example, I currently run 4 autojoined channels. When you list the channels you're in it will show up in a specific format. #=Channelname(#ofoccupants) Example given:
Quote:

Channels: 1=General(143), 2=Paladin(7), 3=Darkheart(1), 4=Anthem(9)
That is exactly what it just said in-game. As you can see the first number is the channel number. Then of course it's which channel corresponds to that number, and how many people are in it.

The "List" function: Member List.
Using /list alone tells you how many people are in which channels, and which channels are which. Now say you want to know who the people are in that one channel. Typing "/list 3" rewards me with the following message:
Quote:

Channel Darkheart(1) members:
*Torgayeth
If there were more players it would continue to list them horizontally broken by commas. This tells you who all is in the channel (obviously) so you know who is online there. If someone is in the channel, they're on. (may be AFK)

Speaking to any Channel from current Window.
Using what you have learned so far, listing your channels will tell you which number is assigned to them. In order to speak to a specific channel the code is "/#". That easy. Example:
Quote:

/list
Channels: 1=General(143), 2=Paladin(7), 3=Darkheart(1), 4=Anthem(9)
/3 Anybody there?
You tell Darkheart:3 'Anybody there?'
Easy as pie. . .
