The Immortalis Virus
There is virus that causes both Vampirism and Shifting. Different mutations of the virus case different effects depending on how it was transmitted. Direct blood contact is the only real way to contract the diseases, and it cannot be something as simple as a drop or two. Most other body fluids have trace amounts, but the amount of fluid needed to contract the virus has to be more then a cup of blood to about a galleon or more of other body fluids. (Nursing young can contract it.)
Beta Immortalis Vampirism
The Beta version of the virus was first contracted by humans. It is unknown where the source (Alpha Immortalis) of the first infection was and for how long it has been with humanity, but many vampires say it has excised since the dawn of man. History shows evidence of this, but whether it was the vampires who put it there or not is under some debate. Rumors abound about vampires after all and who really is to know where the myths end and the truths begin? It effects are as follows:
- Regeneration and Seeming Immortality: The virus is extremely invasive and goes through the body replacing all the cells in the body with itself, altering the very genetic makeup of a person. This invasiveness has the positive effects of being able to quickly repair lost or damaged tissue and of basically drawing the aging process to a halt. It also tends to destroy weaker infections and halt the abilities of other virus. The major problem with this is the fact that the virus still needs base material to repair and keep itself functioning. Most foods are simply too difficult for the virus to use, especially after replacing the digestive tract. This is where the craving for blood comes from.
Human blood has all the components in it that the human body needs to repair itself and is the first choice of the virus. Other types of blood can be used but are considered inferior to the blood that had originally flowed through the infected human. There have been successful strides in making synthetic blood that fulfills the same need as human blood without the risk of anomalies inherent to human blood. The only unrepeatable injury sustained is that of decapitation. It takes too long and too much material to regrow a functioning brain. Faulty attempts by the infection to repair this often leads to stories of zombies. Portions of their body are used to regrow enough of the brain to be functional and the virus then drives the infected to get the proper material for the repair before it ceases to function. This desperate attempt of the virus to be self sustaining is rather remarkable but can easily be halted with the removal of the incomplete brain once more, or through fire.*see below
- Kinetic Manipulation: UV rays, and in most cases fire, cause the infected cells to increase their kinetic ability. This sudden kinetic energy increase will cause anything from major 3rd degree burns to spontaneous combustion. On the plus side, it also increases the overall speed of the carrier and with practice and training, can result in kinetic powers. The most common variations of these are:
- Empathy or Telepathic: The ability to sense the feelings or thoughts of others around you.
- Telekinetic or Pyrokinetic: The ability to use the kinetic ability beyond one's own body.
Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, & Eta Immortalis Shifters
This mutation of the virus was caused when the blood of an infected human was ingested by an animal. Due to the time and areas inhabited by infected humans, the most common type of "Gamma Carriers" were wolves. The virus mutated into what was considered a dormant state in most animals and it was not for some time before the effect on animals became evident. The only way for the virus to become active again was to reintroduce it to human DNA. This cause many animals to become "man killers" as the virus tried to regain control over it's host. The reintroduction of the infection into a living human completed the mutation of the virus. It effects are as follows:
- Longevity and Regeneration: Just as invasive as it's predecessor, this strain replaces all the cells in the victim's body with copies of itself. Every cell holds two copies of DNA, that of a human and that of an animal. Unlike the Beta strain, sunlight has no real effect on a Shifter due to the balancing aspect of the animal DNA. However, silver is very reactive and causes the infected cells to break down, disrupting the connection between the animal and human DNA, and hindered the repair of the area greatly (unless all infected cells that broke down are removed).
The infected, however, enjoys great strength and this strength will increase throughout their lifetimes. This means the longer the virus remains active in an individual, the stronger they become.
- Transformation: Because there is actually a combination of both animal and human DNA present in the virus, it is possible for the infected to make one or the other dominate in their form. This can be to any degree. However, the reflected sunlight off the surface of the moon as been known to increase the more bestial side in general and makes the infected stronger as well.
There are many different types of Shifters, also referred to as Were Creatures. They include most carnivores, but are not limited to them and are only in fact only limited to mammals, as there are other creatures who may have become infected by the Beta Strain. The most common types of Shifters are as follows:
- Gamma Immortalis: Werewolves, Werefox
Dogs: Canidae (wolves, dogs, coyotes, foxes, jackals)
- Delta Immortalis: Werecats, Weretiger
Cats: Felidae (cheetah, domestic cat, wild cat, ocelot, lynx, puma, lion, jaguar, leopard, tiger)
- Epsilon Immortalis: Werebears, Werewolverine
Dog-like: Ursidae (bears), Mustelidae (weasels, otters, ferrets, badgers, skunks, wolverines, etc.), & Procyonidae (raccoons)
- Zeta Immortalis: Werehyaena
Cat-like: Hyaenidae (hyaenas, aardwolf), Viverridae (civets), & Herpestidae (mongooses, meerkats)
- Eta Immortalis: Wereboar, Werebat, Wererat
Other: Suidae (hogs and pigs), Insectivora (hedgehogs, moles), Chiroptera (Bats) & Rodentia (rats, porcupines) - sometimes called the Etc. Immortalis.
Theta Immortalis Cursed
The term Theta is used to describe a more recent occurrence to those infected with either of the above strains. The cause of the following is unknown at the time, but research is being made to determine it. It effects are as follows:
- Undetectable: It is imposable to tell the difference between the original strains and the flaw known as the Theta Immortalis. The infected acts and reacts like any other of it's own kind.
- Seventh Day: The thing that makes this infection so very different is their seventh day of being infected. The infected Theta gets a sudden increase in power that rivals that of an Ancient Vampire or Elder Shifter. They are incredibly powerful for 24 hours, and then the virus burns itself and it's host into ash. This makes identifying the cause of this effect next to imposable. It is unknown if the cause is a flaw in the original infection, some sort of immunity or allergic reaction to the virus, the effects of more modern influences, or something else entirely.
Note: The later strains are very aggressive when introduced to the Beta Strain. They attacks it's predecessor, consuming the cells like the those of a human, but does not replace them. This is to be avoided by all of those infected with the Beta strain and is one of the main points of contention between the two.
