Hi Jan!!

I'm so glad you liked our CDB picture of the 6 of us!!! Looking at them I'm missing the girls already!!!

You are a very pretty lady too! And such handsome grandsons! Awwww I wonder if Connor is missing those beautiful curls now that they're gone!!!
Thank you for posting the picture!

I'm so sad - my 19 year old grandson joined the Air Force! I'm flying to my daughter's in Maryland next weekend to say so long to him. :sniff He starts basic training in November.

Hi Bettie,

I even added to the confusion because I changed my screen name awhile back and you may remember be as Aikenheart1. You may also remember me as the 'crochet stars' lady. BTW I still have a lot of those stars that I could easily turn into name tags if there is another event that a group of CDB'ers are going to. I saw Golfing for inculsion is coming up on February 1st and of course we're all waiting for a tour. Don't anybody hesitate to contact me if you want any stars, I'm always willing to share them. Aikenheart>Clover>Sharon

PS CLover stands for the obvious C. Lover, but it's also my dog Chloe's nickname.

Hi Sharon,

I gave some thought to the Florida Gala, but my feeling is Clay will surely tour next
year so I'm saving for that. If he comes to the Mohegan Sun in CT. like he did in 2007,
the CDBs can all meet there and have a repeat performance weekend like last week!
Yikes, just dreaming about it makes me feel happy...

:Shake_it :bananaparty EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

PS: The crochete star ID tags is a wonderful idea.

Jan, Love the picture of you and your two grandsons. Wow, they are tall (and good lookin'). You look great and so young, as well! What convinced Connor to cut his hair? Wish I could have gotten my Brian to do that at his age. LOL

Sandy and Carol,

Regarding Connor's hair; I think it was his brother who convinced him to cut it. It was actually very hard to take care of, and he was tired of messing with it. He needed it to be easy! LOL!

Actually, he might grow it back out. He did like it, and I think it can look good if he takes better care of it. It took him a year and a half without a haircut to get it to that stage! :dgust

A lot of his girl friends told him they were glad he got it cut. One girl even said, "Now I can see your handsome face!" He liked that
. :wink

Sandy, I know how you must feel about your grandson joining the Air Force! It is a scary thought, but he is doing such an honorable thing! I will keep him in my prayers that he will stay safe! My eldest grandson has talked a bit about going into the military.. but so far has not seemed very serious about it. I would be proud of him if he did, but like you, would be frightened for him as well. :heart :fingerscrossed

Jan - thank you so much for your thoughts about my grandson. I am a little frightened - he's so young. I'm glad I decided to fly to Maryland next week to at least see him again before he leaves.
What makes it even worse he's going to be on the bomb squad!! "Explosive Ordinance Disposal" He was going to change his mind but would have to wait 3 more months to go to training so he stayed with it - talked into it by the recruiter!

Dear God be with him and keep him safe. There was some TV news on tonight planning to have US troups from Afghanistan - removed by some date - forget the date!!

I'm glad your grandson received that nice compliment from that girl!!!!

Have a good night. I'm headed to bed - have to get up early for work tomorrow!

Sweet Claydreams,

Hugs,
Sandy

Sometimes those recruiters just make it sound so glamorous! How old is your grandson?
At this point all you can do is tell him you are proud of him and that you love him. This could be the best thing that ever happened to him... I hope it works out the way he wants it to.

Jan:

I love the picture. You look so young! You have very handsome grandsons.

I also love the group picture. It is nice to put screen names/real names and faces.

I can't wait to meet other CDBers when Clay tours.

Sandy, I'm glad you will be seeing your grandson over the weekend. Nineteen is so young! :sniff

My grandson is 20 1/2, and just today came in talking again about the possibility of going into the Army! Wants to have his college paid for when he gets out and likes the idea of the dicipline and camraderie. (Band of Brothers style). He is tossing a lot of different ideas around right now, though. He has some college under his belt already, but wants to do something exciting and earn some money, he says. :dunno I will believe he is actually going to do it when he tells me it is done. :crook

My grandson, just 21 is going to work as a Contractor. working on Military Gov. contracts. He is going for 2 week class/training in NC soon then to Iraq as a starter. He is very sharp on computers. He will be working in a guarded compound. escorted everywhere he goes. Security clearance, he will be there for several months then can come home for a time before going back again. Difference with this work vs military is if he decides this is not for him he can stop after the first 3 months. They tell him he will make money like he could never here. Right now his boss just returned from his 5th trip (i believe they said) in Iraq. At present they are working with The First Lady of Iraq I have heard. The are getting so many contracts all over the world and will be hiring more soon he was told. This is scarey for me that he is going to do this..He said he is anxious to do this and he has talked to some doing Gov/contract work and they say the money is really good and since jobs are so scarce at this time and he cannot afford college
this is an opportunity for him to build a savings at an early age he could not do otherwise. He thinks he will enjoy the work and challenge from what he has learned. Guess time will tell. It still concerns me the way the world is these days. But would have the same concerns has he joined the military I suppose.

That is very interesting, SweetT. I do understand how scary it is for you that he will be in a part of the world which we perceive as being so dangerous. It sounds like he will be in good hands, though, and that they are taking many precautions to keep him safe. I have heard of people making quite a bit of money when they contract to do work in the middle east.
How did he find out about this opportunity?

Let us know how it goes for him. When will he leave?

SweetT4clay - that is very impressive!! I'm sure you're very proud!! I wish him the very best of luck!! I'm sure I'll be proud of my grandson too. My grandson had his A-plus certificate in computers, but had trouble settling down in College. He's sorry now that he didn't put in more effort, so he's determined that he'll be ok in the Air Force and eventually finish that college education.

My heart goes out to you and your grandsons and anyone who has someone in the military at this time. God Bless you and yours.
My daughter works and the man who comes in to work on their company computers is the owner of the company who does contract jobs. My daughter talked to him about her son, and how knowledgable he is about computers and his accompolishments in program writing etc, self taught. He wanted to talk to him and see his resume and anything he might have of work he has done. So my grandson went to see him and his partner. They interviewed him for four hours. Was very impressed at his capabilities and could not believe he was only 21.

They have hired him and now the training in NC is for certain types of jobs/programs which one of the guys already completed and went on to Iraq. His boss was just there for several months and says He needs more people to help on this project so they are training my grandson to go help also. Not sure when he is leaving but they are gettting his clothes and supplies he will need ready. Also some training he has been getting on how to handle personal business, financial , intellectual and self defense. Don't want to give info of co. name on here but can email it to you if interested in seeing some info on it.

That is interesting, sweetT. Your grandson is clearly very talented. Being proficient in computer programs and related technology is a much in-demand skill these days. It sounds like a very exciting opportunity for him. I wish him all the best and hope it is a great experience for him. It will look great on future resumes!

My grandson is very bright, but doesn't have much interest in that type of technology, although one of his best friends is a whiz at computer programming. What does fascinate Ryan is outer space... astronomy and anything to do with space discovery. He also loves special effects video and media editing. He can watch the Discovery channel for hours on end.

Thank you for taking the time to share all the info about what your grandson will be doing. It is intriguing. :thumbsup

Wow sounds like Ryan is interested in the Army like my other grandson for they have a cash insentive to join Army. I guess they are the only ones at this time.
Neil went to talk to recruiter with a friend. Neil is not in very good shape for he has done very little with his life up to now at 23. But work his wrists on TV Games and burn the midnight hours. He wanted to be a drummer so said he would not need an education for that. Ended up dropping HS and now has got his GED. Found he can't get very far job hunting with no HS diploma. DUH!.
Recruiter told him to work on getting into shape and come back and talk to him
He happens to have nickle size holes (rings) in his ear lobes. UGH! He asked recruiter what about these...pointing to ears..lol..and he said you just concentrate in getting the body in shape..we will take care of those..LOL I bet they will...
Ryan sounds like he has his act together and has interests that will someday probably be rewarding for him..I hope he can find something eventually in the space program or related subjects of interest for him. Proud of him I know, makes us gr-parents proud to see them want to do something with their lives in the future..then there are Neils (sorry). Shame on gr-ma!
Still have hopes for him. He is bro to Patrick. Very envious of his "Computer GEEK" bro now as he has been calling him for years.
Patrick got a call today from his boss in Iraq. He was told they got a contract today that they had been hoping to get. Told Patrick to get his stuff all ready to pack and be on standby for it could be as early as this weekend if all goes right there. So this is to IRAQ. Not school/training in NC..The boss who I thought came back is still there. So he will be training and working with Patrick on the job there if all goes like planned. May well be an opportunity of a lifetime for him now. But still concerns me.
Here I am on GALA thread...sorry everyone I got carried away with the topic at hand and it did not even concern our boyfriend. So since I have been wondering and for "inclusion" for Clay. Has anyone heard if Clay is still going to continue his work as a UNICEF Ambassador? I have not heard anything since Spamalot and Parker's Birth. Just wondering. I am always concerned when he goes away over to the war torn areas also. Did not sound like he had anything presently planned with the statement Jerome said about us getting sick of seeing him in 2010. Rather doubt he will go anywhere the end of this year. Golf Tournament coming up, recording and don't think he would even want to miss out on Parker's first Christmas. IMO.
thanks Jan for the nice things you said re my grandson also.
