Gimme a word and ill try to think of an origin for it. Example: alive. Since having the letter 'a' as a prefix to a word tends to make it the opposite of what it would normally be, some might think 'live' originally meant inanimate or dead. However! Alive is actually a slurring of 'a life' from 'ye olde times' archaic pronounciation. Or darth vader either being (in)vader (like insidious for darth sideous) or simply meaning father (german for father is vader.) I think its german anyway. Gimme a word, any word

Goodbye stems from two words. Good in this context refers to a positive turn of events, and bye is a farewell. Duh. However, goodbye is actually a portmanteau of two words, and thus should be considered a phrase rather than a word, therefore this attempt is considered null and void. Next!

Thread originates from the celtic 'tread', meaning to walk. One of the purposes of the humble thread was to tie to a child's leg when he went out to play so that his parents could find him. As for lock, this probably is a slurring of the archaic 'lác', a suffix attached to, among other words, 'réaflác', meaning roberry. The suffix then became a word of its own, a warding against roberry. I actually had to look up lock, because I wasn't sure how to spell réaflác, or to do the elongated vowel symbol.
