OOC: Mission Thread IC: It had been several days since Kyle had fought the fast-food robber, and during that time, he’d done quite a bit of thinking. At first, when he’d realized he’d gained abilities that weren’t… normal, the boy had thought he was entirely unique, that no one had powers like his. However, he had been quickly proven wrong. He knew for a fact there was at least one other person with abilities like his, and the other person he knew of had no intentions of hiding his powers or using them selflessly. If that was the case, there were probably others like him, and he was probably going to run into another person like that sooner or later. And from what he saw, there was no way to keep people like that in check. Well, there was one way; for some people with powers like that to fight them: have super people keep themselves in check. It felt like a neat solution, but there were problems. What did that mean for him? Would he have to start seeking out other people and fight them? And what if people started getting caught in the crossfire? There hadn’t been much in the way of property damage during his fight with the purple-guy, but that didn’t mean he would always be that lucky. As a precaution, Kyle had gone under the radar and bought a few things that might end up being of use to him. First was an energy dagger: a hilt that could project a foot-long blade of energy when activated. Second was a modified Kevlar vest: one with metal thread woven into it. He figured he’d be able to have some control over himself if he was ever sent flying, by exerting magnetism on the metal parts. Then there was a pair of thermal goggles. Handy for concealing his eyes, and for locating opponents if they ever tried to hide. He took another walk around Uptown, keeping his new items on him but hidden under or in his clothing, so no one would take notice and ask him about them. |

Kyle's walk would be interrupted by a crowd of people rushing out of a street. They looked panicked, a few of the less hardened ones were crying, and over the sound of their frantic cries, Kyle could hear gunfire. A woman would collide with Kyle, falling to the ground as she let out a soft cry of surprise. She wouldn't wait for Kyle to help her up though-she needed to escape NOW for whatever reason. As she ran off, another man ran past, urging Kyle to run. "They have guns, and aiming at us. You need to run!" If Kyle was perceptive of the situation, he would see several hummers blocking that particular street off-people had to climb over them to escape, and the vehicles formed an effective blockade against any officers. What he was unlikely to see, however, was that each of the hummers had been rigged with explosives underneath the frame. Most likely, police would arrive, park their cars next to the hummers, and then use the hummers as cover from possible return fire-a tactic that would get them all killed when the explosives were detonated. The police hadn't arrived yet, but the situation was quickly escalating, and the secret of the explosives could cause much more damage than these criminals could with their weapons. It was time for action. |

Kyle’s walk was interrupted by a small stampede of distraught people. What now? He thought, as much annoyed as he was worried. At first he thought there was a fire or something, but his theory was quickly dispelled by the sound of gunfire. Is it another robbery? So soon after the last one? Not good. At first he tried to avoid the human flood, he accidentally collided with a woman, who quickly stood back up and ran off before he could even apologize. Another man went by, yelling at him to run. Appearing to do as he was told, Kyle followed the crowed, but at the same time, moved to one side of the street, where he ducked into an alleyway, and put on his disguise. With all the commotion out on the street, it was doubtful anyone would notice. He waited for the crowd to slacken a bit, and then made his way towards the source of the commotion. Trying to avoid detection as long as he could, he kept himself low and to one side of the street. He saw the hummers that were being used as a road block, and used them as cover, attempting to keep the cars between himself and whoever was causing the disturbance. When he reached the nearest one, he ducked down underneath it to see what was going on. At that point, he’d notice the explosives. Shoot, they’re going to blow up the cars as soon as the police arrive, aren’t they? I’m surprised they didn’t use cheaper cars for this, but they probably had their reasons. In the meantime… Kyle put one hand against the side of the hummer and started to slowly drain the car’s battery of electricity. He’d discovered during his fight with the purple-dude he could absorb electricity to bolster his own electric attacks, a fairly handy trick. He also sent a mental probe of sorts into the car. One of his abilities was to hack into and take control of computers, and some of the newer cars had built-in ones to control all the different mechanisms in the car electronically. If it was true, he could quite possibly take control of the car itself, which had some interesting possibilities. |

His plan to drain the battery was a sound one-and fortunately enough, the vehicle still had some juice in it. Unfortunately for his second plan, it didn't have much else. These criminals had thought somewhat ahead. All of these vehicles were about to be blown up, so once they had been put in place, everything that COULD be removed and sold elsewhere WAS removed and taken with them. It seemed at least one person in this group knew enough about cars to get the valuable programming chips and things of that nature out of them. The battery plan only worked because the engines were too large to remove quickly. So, the vehicles in front of him had no computer-iness to them. Everything was purely mechanical. Speaking of mechanical things, Kyle would soon hear a click. It seemed the bombs here were set off by motion in it's vicinity-ensuring that they would only detonate when the police arrived and that no one would have to risk his life keeping an eye out for the cops. If Kyle looked at the bomb, he'd see a small dial twirling. The dial was moving fairly quickly, and would complete it's entire rotation in about a second. Kyle didn't know himself, but when the dial completed a single rotation, it would set off the bomb. He wouldn't have time to notice the bomb's movements, deduce what it meant, AND stop it with his abilities-he'd have to get the hell out of here if he wanted to NOT end up a charred corpse. |

Unfortunately, his probe turned up nothing. Darn it: the cars were either a lot older then they looked, or they'd already stripped it of everything digital: probably to sell it off. That made sense. Before Kyle could think of his next move, he heard a clicking sound from the explosives. It looked like the dial had started to spin. Oh s***, a motion sensor! He also realized that since he would have picked up on it with his mental probe if he could do anything about it with technopathy, there was nothing he could do accept run, which he did. There was always a chance he could short-circuit it with his electric manipulation, but he wasn't sure if he could, and wasn't willing to take the chance. So much for a surprise attack. He thought grimly as he fell back. Though he'd gotten a little distance, he was unable to completely get out of the blast range before the bombs went off, and the force of the explosion sent him flying forward. Realizing he was about to hit the pavement hard if he didn't do something, Kyle exerted his magnetism powers on his vest, killing some of his momentum. Then when he hit the ground, he used a roll he'd learned to do in karate class to minimize how badly injured he was by his fall. Between those two acts, he was able to nullify most of the damage. His forearms and shins where still somewhat scraped up though. However, he had no time to nurse his small injuries. He quickly got back on his feet and looked around for any signs of the robbers. |

One of the crooks turned back towards the door-one of their cars had been set off. However, no sirens had been heard prior-someone other than a cop just got blown up. "Ey, hurry up! People are messin with the cars!" Inside the store, there were five men, each one easily standing 6 feet tall and looking as if they could get into a fight with a cougar and probably win. To make matters worse, they were armed with lots and lots of guns. To be specific, each one carried a military-grade assault rifle and a pair of pistols. The one who seemed to be the leader also had a double-barrel shotgun strapped across his back. These people were not playing around. Also inside the store was another vehicle-quite a large one. An armored truck, to be precise. Two of the criminals were loading up the truck with anvil after anvil, while the other three guarded the hostages, each one complete with a belt of dynamite wrapped around their waists. It was easy to see how the truck got in-one of the store's large full-pane windows had been smashed, and in front of it was another truck. Actually, there were more trucks on site than there were criminals inside-not that it'd be easy to see into the store through the smoke of the hummer exploding and the other vehicles, but yes-there were more vehicles than there were criminals inside. Such was a fact that Kyle may have wanted to figure out and think about, if he was smart. In the distance, Kyle and the robbers would hear sirens. The police were coming, and things were about to get much more complicated. |

Kye heard the sound of sirens in the distence. Cops already? DARN IT! It's too soon. I have to finish this quickly. The boy also heard the sound of one of the criminals talking: yup, he'd been spotted. In that case, the time for subterfuge was over: time to get serious. Taking a look at the front of the store, he could see an armored car had been parked via crashing into the front of the store. He couldn't see the robbers yet, but they were probably inside, securing the hostages and loading up their loot, whatever it was. Though if he didn't do something about it, they'd be showing up pretty soon. Well, that's their ride. I'd better do something about that first. Gathering his will, Kyle invoked his power over magentism, urging the car to come towards him. Granted, he didn't expect it to actually do that: his powers were too weak for that. However, he figured he'd at least be able to tip the darn thing. And if he could, it would cut off the robber's means of escaping with their loot, unless they were able to carry it with them. Idly he looked up at the store's sign. What he was was the unexpected but unmistakable picture of an anvil. An ANVIL!!! These people are stealing ANVILS!! THEY SHALL PAY!!!! He wasn't sure why such a trifleing though made him so angry, it was as if someone else's emotions were running through him, someone who had more influence on his actions then he believed. What fun for him, though he'd have to put such thoughts aside for the time being, he had people to fight, and posts to flesh out. |

Unfortunately, the vehicle did not move the way he wanted. Kyle was not yet strong enough to pull something as large as an armored truck. He did, however, notice that it inched forward just a little. It could be moved-but not the way he was trying. The sirens steadily got louder; the police would be here soon, and when they arrived, disaster would strike. To make matters worse, the crooks were increasing their rate of theft-probably trying to clear out as soon as possible to avoid further confrontation. Most likely, they'd detonate the rest of the charges as soon as the police arrived, then pile in the truck and plow through the wreckage. Judging by the sounds of the sirens, the police would be here very soon. If Kyle was going to do something, he'd have to do it quickly. |

It appeared Kyle had overestimated his abilities. Darn. He’d have to do this the hard way. Perhaps if he had more time to come up with a plan, he’d have been able to pull something off with more finesse, but with the criminals aware of his presence, and the police nearby, he simply didn’t have the time. Gathering his electric power, he approached the armored car. Then, when he was close enough, sent a powerful electric current running through it. Since the car was mostly made of metal, the electricity would probably go right through it, injuring whoever was inside. “Come out with your weapons away and your hands up!” He yelled at the as-of-yet unseen robbers. Though he tried to sound confident, his voice cracked half-way through his demand, making him sound somewhat puny. Darn it, there’s no way they’re going to listen to that. |

Kyle's new plan was vastly superior to his old one. His previous absorption of electricity from the hummer from before amped his natural electric abilities up-enough so that the people inside definitely felt it. One ran out of the vehicle, then collapsed to the ground, trembling from the electricity arcing through his body. The other...the other didn't. He had been unfortunate enough to be holding a golden anvil at the time. The resulting charge stopped his heart almost instantly. Unfortunately, that left three criminals, and a fourth slowly but surely recovering from the initial attack, armed and ready to fight back-and fight back they did. All three of the healthy ones raised their pistols and opened fire without a second's more hesitation. To make matters a bit more complicated, the cops were here. Predictably, they pulled up beside the hummers-which set off the motion sensors. Kyle knew what was going to happen-but at this point, there wasn't much he could do. Even if he managed to warn the police in time, they wouldn't be able to react in time-and Kyle really couldn't afford to think about anything else with six pistols all firing at him...this mission of his had quickly gone from "distressful" to "disastrous". |

~~~Event Post~~~ All the chaos would be momentarily halted by the appearance of a large pillar of flame in the distance, crimson red in color. The flames appeared almost to be the color of freshly spilled blood. Above the pillar, a black cloud, so black that it seemed to exude evil, billowed out, extending over the Anvil Store and well past it. Briefly, the area was lit, not by the sun, but by those crimson flames. The pillar and cloud remained for a few seconds, and then vanished-the flames died, and the cloud faded away. The momentary weather anomaly had vanished, and with it, did the distractions to the crooks-all previous actions they were taking resumed as normal. ~~~End of Event Post~~~ OOC: Keep an eye on the news. This will be explained in a few days. For now, continue on with your mission. |
A lot of things happened, and Kyle didn't have nearly enough time to react to all of them. For starters, his electric attack did more damage then he'd thought it would: one of the robbers was actually killed by it. This would have caused quite a bit of emotional damage, if he'd been aware of it. For now though, he had no clue what he'd just done. Meanwhile, the criminals had gotten him in there line of fire, and tried to shoot him. However, what they didn't know was that his magnetic powers made guns less-then-effective at dealing with him. Sure, he wasn't powerful enough to stop bullets. (Not yet anyways) But that didn't stop him from doing something about the guns themselves. As the robbers took aim, Kyle flicked his wrist. He pulled the guns towards him, ripping them out of the criminals' hands. If it worked, the weapons would land in a semi-neat pile at the boy's feet. That was a close one. All right, no more warnings. He was about to launch a counter attack when something else happened. In the distance, a pillar of flame shot into the air, soon followed by a cloud of smoke. "What the heck?" Kyle wondered aloud. At first he thought it was something to do with the robbery, but the criminals looked as surprised as he was. That... could not have been good. He thought. However, he had no time to dwell on it, as the robbers were quickly getting over the distraction. Quickly, he raised his hands and launched two electric currents at the nearest pair of foes. They weren't quite as powerful as the one he'd zapped the armored car with, but it was still strong enough to do some damage. |
Both criminals slumped to the ground, twitching as the electricity coursed through their body. After a few seconds, they both were still, and smoke rose from their bodies. They were alive, but they were in no condition to do anything. The police were out of commission. Those who weren't dead were wounded, or trying to help the wounded. This had gone to hell. Granted, Kyle hadn't made it worse, but still, deaths had been caused. If Kyle had been paying attention to the number of crooks and the number of vehicles, he may have been expecting this next part-as it was, he was definitely not expecting of the rubber bullets slamming into his back. On the surrounding buildings, more crooks were standing with weapons ready, though the order had been given to use nonviolence. In the meantime, the leader calmly walked towards the superpowered individual, removing his gloves as he did so-Kyle was probably about to hurt. Badly. |
Kyle heard another explosion. This one was the sound of the other bomb-loaded cars going off. He realized he’d been too late to save the cops. However, once again, he had no time to do anything about it, due to the robbers having some unexpected reserves. Suddenly, Kyle felt several bullets slam into his back, knocking him down onto his hands and knees. Fortunately, they were only rubber bullets: nothing that would be fatal. Plus, he was wearing his Zap Jacket, which prevented some of the damage. Of course, it wasn’t quite as effective as he’d hoped: the jacket was designed to primarily prevent penetration, not blunt trauma. Perhaps he ought to do something about that in the future. Meanwhile, one of the thugs, probably the leader, was coming closer, clearly intent on finishing him off. However, he’d apparently forgotten about something. The pile of weapons Kyle had already taken from the thugs had been at his feet, easily within reach for him now that he was down on all fours. Using his magnetism, he caused one of the pistols to fly neatly into his hand, which he quickly raised, aiming at the head-thug’s midsection. “I’d stay put if I were you.” He told the thug. In truth, he had no intention of shooting the criminal. He wasn’t ready to kill anyone, though he’d already done so unknowingly. Plus, he’d never fired a gun in his life, and knew better then to try in a situation like this. However, he had other ways of fighting, which were at least as effective. The gun’s only use was in intimidation: unlike his powers, the danger was quite visible. Using his magnetism, he drew out the hilt of his energy dagger, and without turning it on, sent it flying at the robber’s forehead. Even with the blade deactivated, it still made a handy projectile. Since he was using his magnetism, it didn’t require him to use his hands either. |
When Kyle reached for a weapon, he'd find a rubber bullet slam hard into his palm, then another into his back. Those people on the building weren't going to let him take down their boss that easily. Kyle's second attack, however, was a success. The handle flew at the crook's head, making a nice little cut on his forehead from the impact. Unfortunately...well, a handle to the face isn't exactly enough to bring down a determined criminal. The crook kicked at the prone Kyle's face-hard. If Kyle dodged, he'd avoid possibly a fractured jaw and/or cheekbone. If he didn't dodge, he'd have to suffer the pain, but he'd learn something interesting-the boss was wearing steel-toed boots. Unfortunately, he had to deal with both the boss and the sharpshooters at the same time-things weren't getting any easier, and his reluctance to kill only made it that much harder. |
Unfortunately, Kyle's gun threat didn't work very well: the sharpshooters hit his hand, causing it to go partially numb. He could tell it was going to hurt later. Gah, they're going to shoot me whenever I make a move! The handle attack worked a bit better, but it barely even phased the criminal, who was now in pretty close range. It he wanted to avoid being beaten to a pulp, he had to do something now. He couldn't afford to take any noticeable and/or serious injuries: his parents would ask questions. Fortunately, he had one last trick up his sleeve. Using a trick he'd picked up from the guy who'd robbed the McDonalds, he sent an electric current through the ground, going right for the criminal. At such close range, it would be difficult to dodge the attack. The man's steel toed boots would only make it worse for the thug, though Kyle wasn't aware of that. As for what Kyle did next... that would depend on what happened. |
Kyle's attack worked brilliantly; the electricity hit the boss as his foot was coming up towards Kyle, and the man started involuntarily twitching in response to the attack. Unfortunately, his attack wouldn't go unpunished-three more rubber bullets slammed into his back, each causing their fair share of pain. The boss was collapsed on the ground, a spark occasionally dancing across his body. He rose a hand to his ear, pushing a button slowly. "Alright...screw it. Ice this kid." Kyle would have only a few seconds to get to cover while the sniper switched weapons-and he'd need to, since the next shot wouldn't be rubber, and would be aimed right at his skull. Kyle had heard the boss' command, so he'd know to get away, at least. After giving his command, the boss' hand collapsed as the man lost consciousness. If Kyle managed to get somewhere safe, his work was not yet done. He still had at least one sniper out there, though who knew how many there really were. One thing was certain, there was at least one man for every vehicle present-otherwise, how could they have gotten them here? The remains of four hummers on each side of the street, plus the armored car indicated the presence of at least 9 people, five of which were incapacitated. Where the hell were those other four though, and how could Kyle deal with them? |
Kyle's attack worked, but the snipers continued to hit him with those damn rubber bullets. However, he knew it would be just a matter of time before they started hitting him with real ones, now that their boss was down. When the head thug pulled out a radio, Kyle didn't even give him a chance to use it, wrenching it out of the man's hand and into his own with his magnetism abilities. He then quickly took cover within the armored car. They hadn't had a chance to close it, so he had no trouble getting in. Of course, he saw the bodies of the two men that had been electrocuted by his running a current through it earlier, but it still didn't occur to him that one had been killed by it: he figured they were both just unconscious. Pushing the "talk" button, he addressed who he presumed was the remaining snipers. When he spoke, he made his voice sound somewhat higher pitched then normal, in order to prevent them from knowing what he really sounded like. "I suggest you all surrender. I've taken out everyone on the ground, and captured the armored car, in which is your sole reason for even being here. If you're not willing to do that, leave now and we can all get out of here before the cop's reinforcements arrive." Once his message was finished, he released his hold on the talk button and waited for their response. |
A single clear voice came back to Kyle over the radio-"You're just a kid! What the hell are you doing?...it doesn't matter. We're not leaving. Our employer wants these anvils, and he's paying way too good to say no. The way I see it, you're in just as much shit as we are. Sure, we can't hit you now...but you've gotta leave that truck eventually. And the second you do, you're gonna have a hole in your head the size of a hockey puck. Maybe we should demonstrate." A single shot would ring out-one of the hostages fell to the ground, dead before he landed. The hostages near his body started screaming, trying to get away. "I suggest you tell them to stay put. We're willing to kill or be killed over this; we've already killed cops. We don't mind killing them too. Of course...you could offer yourself up in place of these hostages. Yano, be a hero, save the day...no girl to get, and it's a sad ending, but you get to be the hero of this story. Or, we could keep picking them off one at a time. Your call." There was the ultimatum-offer himself in place of the rest of the hostages, which saves those people, but lets the bad guys win-and would probably end with Kyle getting himself killed; OR, he could stay safe himself, but watch as the hostages died, one at a time from the evil men on the roof. A third option would be to try to find a solution that DIDN'T suck...but Kyle would have to think of his course of action very carefully. Very few roads he had to choose from came without consequence. What would Kyle do? |
The criminal at the other end sounded surprised that he was just a kid. Well, bad move on his part. You’d think that taking out all the robbers on the ground would have convinced him not to underestimate Kyle, kid or no kid. Paying only minimal attention to what the criminal was saying, Kyle used his technopathy to tap into the armored car’s computer. The others hadn’t had anything left to tap into, but then, they’d been throwaway cars from the start. By the time the man on the other end had gotten to the line about him not being able to stay in the car forever, the aspiring “hero” had complete control of the viecle. Revving up the engine, he caused the car to roll out of the destroyed glass pane and out onto the street, then, he had it make a sharp turn, until it was parallel with the street. Finally, he had it back up, getting in between his estimated position of the sniper and the victimized store. “On one hand,” he said over the radio, ”you’re correct. I will have to leave the truck eventually, but why here? I can just dump what’s already been loaded and drive away. So unless you want to try carrying all these anvils by hand, I’d suggest you forget the job, and leave while you still can.” |
