Leila hadn't heard from Phil the last few days after that night in her apartment where everything seemed to go wrong after it was going right. The next day she had spent indoors by herself experimenting with what she had discovered by chatting up her cat, Rosco. At first it was very strange and she felt silly about it, thinking that maybe it had all been a dream or something. When Rosco replied to a question of hers however, she accepted it as real and went about trying to figure out everything she could about it. She spent her nights after work at the library and on the computer searching for some kind of answers, but it always ended at a dead end...or Dr. Dolittle.

What am I doing? This isn't going anywhere.
Leila sat in her apartment flipping through a book she had checked out of the library. "This is stupid. Whoever heard of someone talking to an animal besides friggin Dr. Dolittle!"

She threw the book across the room, hitting the wall and it landed with a thud, some of the pages folded under. She looked over at the desk and saw the business card Phil had left that night. With a sigh Leila got up, grabbed the card, and pulled out her phone. What the hell. It wouldn't hurt. She dialed the number on the card and waited for him to pick up- if he would at all.

Phil's voice could be heard on the other side of the line-after all, he wouldn't know to avoid Leila's number, since he never got it.

"Hello?"

In the background, sounds of metallic clanging could be heard-Phil was probably at work.

~~~
He was indeed at work. Behind him, Phil called out for his employer to stop trying to kill himself and got back to the matter at hand. He had a phone call. He never had phone calls.
"If you're selling something or giving me a trip, I don't want it."
Ah! He doesn't know my number. I could hangup right now, I didn't think about what to say.
"Phil? It's me. Leila."
She said it, damage done. Now hopefully he wouldn't hang up on her. She crossed her fingers like a little kid hoping that doing so would give her some luck.
"Are you busy?"
Crap. Walk away, Phil. She's crazy and makes you hear things. "No, I'm not too busy....umm...do you wanna give things another shot?" What. The. Hell. That is the EXACT opposite of what I just said. "I'm sorry about how I acted the other day...has it worn off yet? Mine did...it's just...it was a lot to take in all at once, yano?" Why do you even have an inner monologue here when you're going to ignore the advice you give to yourself? That makes no sense.
Honestly, Phil was pretty busy-but he could take off anyways. Fancy thing about working for people who didn't expect even a slight improvement, much less a good job-not all of them were so worried about a day or two.
Plus, bossman knew what he was doing.
You're gonna regret this. "Did you wanna meet up today?"
When Leila heard a response other than a 'click' on the other end of the phone she was glad. Though, she hadn't really thought about why she was calling in the first place- she seemed to have skipped that thought process. "Uh, yeah sure." Another shot? At what?
Leila stood up and started pacing the room, fumbling with her hair and biting her lip. She was obviously nervous about this whole conversation. She didn't know where it would lead or what would come from it, but she hoped that it would give her answers or at the very least a friend who she could talk to about it. That in itself however, was a bit out of the ballpark. "It's alright, don't worry about it. It was a lot to take in." If I tell him it hasn't worn off he might hangup and forever think I'm crazy. Let's just pretend I didn't hear that part.
"Yeah, that'd be great if we could." Leila could hear something in the background...sounded like clanging. Ah crap. I think he's at work. Why did he answer his phone then?
"When you get off of work we could meet up somewhere." Please oh please oh please.
"I'm actually off right now...so, I'm gonna go shower and then I'll meet you..." Phil let it hang so Leila could answer it for him. He really had no idea where he might have wanted to go anyways-so, it was up to her. His inner monologue having died away, Phil yelled back that he was leaving for the day and started to walk back towards his car.
There's probably a chance I might start this again around her...unless it was an isolated event type of thing...we'll see.
When Leila gave him an answer, Phil would say his goodbyes and hang up. He was really doing this-meeting again with the animal girl. In truth, his reasoning was very selfish in this-he was told to meet with "special" people...and as far as he knew, talking to animals was pretty special in and of itself. So, here came the first special person he knew...and he ran away from her.
It was time to fix that mistake, if it could even BE fixed. Besides, other than the animal thing, she wasn't that bad of a girl to be around-definitely not the worst he'd ever associated with.
"At Starbucks. Y'know the one that's near Nikki's?" If she met him in a public area it would be less likely of a scene if things turned sour. Also, no animals. Satisfied with her answer, he hung up and she did the same. She sighed and looked down at Rosco.
"So what am I supposed to say? Hey remember that night when I could talk to animals? Do you think that's weird?" Leila sighed heavily and plopped down on the couch. Rosco flicked his tail back and forth and jumped up on the couch resting on her lap. "I think you should tell him the truth. If you want answers then that's the way to go...obviously."
Leila shrugged and got up grabbing her purse and putting on her shoes- Rosco being pushed aside. As she walked out the door she heard Rosco say, "Oh, do tell him I said 'Hello'."
~~~

Arriving at Starbucks, Leila sat at a table near the front by a window so she would be easy to spot. Some small plants decorated the window sill and the aroma was very overpowering. This smell is very intoxicating. Makes my mouth water every time. What should I say when he gets here? I suppose a simple 'Hello' will be acceptable...dummy.

Phil would arrive shortly after Leila, and upon seeing her, would approach-last time, it took physical contact for things to start working...maybe it'd take the same again? Anyways, he couldn't just walk up and touch her. That'd be weird.

"Hey. What's up?"

It was so easy, acting like nothing had happened-especially since Phil had completely flopped opinions on the matter. What was weird a few days ago was pretty cool today.

As he sat down, he looked at Leila, trying to perceive if there was any change in the girl. He doubted it, since it had only been a few days. Still though, if something was different, it was probably best to notice.

"Sorry about the other day...I overreacted, I think."

"What's up?" Alrighty then. I was expecting some awkward tension, but this is much much better.

"Hey you." Leila put on a smile and thought of how to bring up the topic in question. Maybe I should just forget this altogether. I mean it's not causing any problems for me...except for the situation with Phil. But this is the reason why I called him today. Ah this is so frustrating!

She kept having to push her bangs behind her ear to keep it from falling into her eyes- she forgot to wear her clip today. It was a little chilly in Starbucks though wearing blue jean shorts might not have been the best idea, not to mention the tank-top she had slipped on.

"It's...alright. It was pretty weird, right?" she'd laugh and wait for a reply or see if he'd laugh about it too.

"Yea, definitely weird. At least we know you're not crazy though. Or, if you are, so am I. Phil laughed a bit as he sat there, obviously anxious about something. He couldn't let her know how bad he wanted to try again though-if he did that, she'd probably think he was only here for her power, which wasn't the case...it was simply the most pressing matter on his mind.

Phil reached across the table, palm up.

"Would you mind if I tried something?"

Phil knew he wouldn't be able to focus until he knew whether or not his strange acquisition from the other day was a fluke or not. He needed to know. Once he did...well, things would probably get easier on both of them if they knew that Phil was a freak too.

Maybe we both are. At least you don't think I'm the only one now. Leila watched him. He wasn't acting like she thought he would and it was a little...odd. She laughed with him anyways, regardless of how she felt.

As Phil reached across the table she leaned back from the table confused to what he was doing. With his question he only confused her further. She looked at him raising one eyebrow a little.

"And what would that be?"

Alairis had needed caffeine! Lots of it! She hadn’t been sleeping very well the last couple of weeks or so. Worries of being kidnapped, missing her friends, and now school worries. It all made it pretty hard to get a decent rest.

So she was here slurping down several frothy caffeinated drinks, most of which she couldn’t name. While she did so she was working on her art project that was due in a week. She sat in the corner of the shop with her sketchpad in hand. Her eyes flicking back and forth from her subjects to the paper. Realy she had no set person in mind as she drew. She just sketched each person as they arrived. She’d sort through them later to figure out just who she’d put in her little painting.

Right then she happened to be drawing from a rather cute couple. Couples generally made good pieces. They were whispering too low for her to hear, which she wasn’t exactly concerned about. She was more focused on drawing. That was until they had some rather serious look on their faces. Okay, curiosity poked. While she was too far to hear them outloud, Alairis would have no problems ‘listening in’. She was a mind reader after all, and speech always had this little pre-echo in the mind before spoken.

The conversation she taped into, proved a little more interesting than what she was expecting. ‘Crazy?’ She couldn’t help but pay attention now. Not that they’d ever know about their ease dropper.

ooc: Purple is projected thoughts.

Phil kept his hand outstretched and made eye contact with Leila-maybe he could tell her why he was as serious about this as he was later. For now, she'd have to settle for superficial curiosity.

"Well...the last time I...yano, heard things, it was after we kissed. I figure it might have something to do with physical contact...so I wanted to see if I was right."

Honesty was a good policy, and near honesty was a better one. After all, even though this business was crazy, him telling her that a fortune teller told him to seek out special people would be crazier. He couldn't drive her away TOO quickly.

"There's something else too. Everything was kind of...bright, I guess, right afterwards. Like someone messed with the tv settings, but in real life. I was wondering if it was part of your thing too or not.

Though, I guess if it's not working anymore, it might not work for me either...Guess we'll have to see, huh?

Leila struggled to keep her feelings from getting in the way of the task at hand- getting answers. She couldn't really blame him for reacting the way he did that night. It was a lot to take in and process and he was probably thinking he was completely loony for hearing a cat talk- not to mention herself.

"Yeah, that makes sense. I can understand wanting to get some answers because...well, I have to admit that's why I called you in the first place..."

Leaning forward in her chair she slowly placed her hand in his and waited to see if it had any effect. Last time if she remembered correctly nothing "special" had happened. No spark or vibrating kind of feeling you would think it might have- at least that's what was in the movies.

"Bright?" She tried to remembered exactly what had happened to her specifically that night. I remember being able to talk to Rosco but as far as light...Oh! "When you slammed the door it was louder than normal. Why do you ask anyways?"

When Leila's hand touched his, Phil looked at it expectantly-he wasn't sure what he was looking for, but nothing happened. Phil closed his eyes and focused on Leila's hand-and, just like that, he got a reaction. A static shock-and, with that, he opened his eyes...and saw nothing different. The world was just as it was, he didn't hear anything new...it was all the same.

"Did you feel that? The shock? I can't tell if anything worked...no animals nearby..."

Phil frowned-he hadn't thought this through very well. "Do you wanna get out of here? The park, maybe?" There should be animals there...we might be able to hear something. I might be able to figure this out too.

Phil would rise from the table, taking Leila's hand with him, and beckoning her to follow him to his car. It was investigation time.

The more the two spoke, the more of an interesting puzzle Alairis realized she had drop in her lap. It seemed these two were a bit more ‘gifted’ than most. Exactly how ‘gifted’ was a bit of a mystery to her and apparently to them.

She pondered what she should do. These folks were obviously stumbling onto something. Something that Alairis was quite a bit more familiar with if it was like she thought. ‘Not yet.’ She finally decided. ‘They aren’t ready quite yet.’ While she was half wanting to jump over there and start talking to them, that’d only scare them off she thought. Obviously their first encounter with the unusual hadn’t gone well for them.

When the guy decided to head someplace else, that was something of a problem for Alairis. Then she remembered it wouldn’t be all that hard to follow them. She was a mind reader after all, she could just follow their minds at a distance and never lose them.

Seeing Phil's face light up, Leila figured that whatever he was hoping for had happened. She fidgeted slightly, a little uncomfortable in the wooden chair that had been sat in one too many times.

"A shock? I didn't feel a thing...just your hand on mine." Last time there was no shock either, even with Rosco nearby. Leila pulled her hand back and leaned back in the chair, a little disappointed. He was just as curious as she was and when he asked to go to the park where the animal count was bountiful a small smile itched to spread across her face. She wouldn't let it slip though- she was still a little upset about his leaving before.

"Yeah! We can head out there, that'd be better than here." Oh, don't sound too excited Leila...geez. Anymore excited and you might just jump out of your seat. And with that, Phil had grabbed her hand and they were heading out the door to his car. As they left however, Leila couldn't stop the rosy color of embarrasment from appearing along her cheeks. She couldn't act as though that kiss hadn't happened.

Phil would lead Leila back to his car, where they'd make for the park. Phil couldn't keep his mind off of the upcoming event-what if he heard it this time? Was there a way to never lose it? The questions just kept coming. And, on top of that-what did Leila think about all this? Was she upset? Feeling used? In any case, Phil decided to stop thinking about it quite as much.

"Alright...uh...do you have any siblings?"

Starting the game up again. He didn't have much in the way of creativity right now-that was pretty much all gone. What he did have, however, was curiosity.

The completely non-joking-around-here expression on his face made it plain to see that he was not joking around here.

The question game was on again.

Leila sat in the car wondering what would happen in the park. The least that would come from this meeting was a way to break the awkwardness she felt and to finally know that she wasn't crazy- an apology too. She would sit quietly in the seat with nothing much running through her mind surprisingly. It was just happening so fast that she took whatever was in front of her at that moment in time.

"Siblings? Nope. I'm an only child...what does that have to do with anything?" She knew he was being dead serious by the look on his face. Hence, she answered it before asking it's relation to their predicament.

Phil nodded and kept driving. He had a very, very important reason for asking-obviously.

"Well...I don't know what this thing is. But, there's a chance it's genetic. If you had a sibling, and if they said anything about things being weird for them lately...I have a little sister. If this IS genetic, I'd want to be able to at least warn her about it."

Plus, who knew whether or not siblings would have the same power, similar powers, or powers not even slightly related to each other? This whole thing was a mystery, one that Phil intended to solve. Every bit of information helped in his quest for more knowledge about this stuff.

He had already made up his mind-he was going to be an expert on these powers. That woman said to seek out special people, and by now, Phil was sure that she meant people like Leila. That meant there were more out there, maybe who could do different things. Phil would meet as many as he could, and would understand as much about these powers as he possibly could.

"Your turn to ask a question."
