It had only been a week since Impulse flew for the first time-predictably, doing it again was a bit of a chore. However, it was only that-a chore. The mental strain from a week ago with the rats had awoken something in Impulse. He was a changed man, in a few ways, at least. The emotions he could feel these days were different. They were every bit as intense as before, but he could still feel himself under them. And what's more, strange things had been happening lately. When he'd walk around the city (now that stray emotions didn't have the same effect as before) focusing on a particular emotion would make that emotion clearer-clearer AND stronger. It took Phil the experience of focusing on these emotions in plain view of the man experiencing them first hand to understand that he was enhancing them-anger, joy, fear, sorrow...it didn't matter. Any emotion, any gut feeling, could be strengthened. Phil's reliance upon memory to conjure up powerful emotions was gone. He could now MAKE powerful emotions. Additionally, his telekinetic limits seemed to have been pushed. He could move things easier now, and more than before. Not to mention his newfound ability of flight. And, on top of that, a previously unknown power had recently made itself known to Phil. He wasn't sure how, he simply knew that it worked. He seemed to be able to know where things were, and his reactions were now noticeably faster. But, even with all of those new additions, that still wasn't everything. Phil discovered something else when he pried into the emotions of others-in particular, he heard things. At first, the sounds were unintelligable, barely reminiscent of even human sounds. Eventually, however, the sounds evolved into ideas that followed emotions, and lately, they had taken shape into actual words. Phil was a telepath now as well. I'm obviously stronger than I was a week ago...I wonder if I could have stopped the ratmen today in my current state? He'd think more about the issue throughout the day. From his vantage point up above the clouds, he was more than confident in his privacy. |
