This was posted this morning. http://www.kentnews.co.uk/kent-news/Eccleston-joins-Shakespeare-cast-for-special-show-newsinkent15813.aspx?news=local Eccleston joins Shakespeare cast for special show Former Dr Who star Christopher Eccleston is to appear in a production of Romeo and Juliet near Herne Bay this Friday staged by actors with learning difficulties. The actor, who appeared recently in hit American action series Heroes, will join Manchester Celebrity Pig Theatre Company, for whom he acts as patron, in a special adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. Under artistic director Caroline Clegg, the company has devised an inventive take on the tale of the star-crossed lovers, which will be performed in an open air production at Strode Park House. The play is set in Manchester in 2006, around the Capulet semi in Wythenshawe, not far from Montague House, a residential care centre. The lovers meet at a glittering masked-ball of a birthday party for Juliet, and when her father gives in to her desire for a short stay at Montague House, their fate is sealed. Mrs Clegg said: “They manage to get across a pointed commentary on the regulation and red tape involved for people who endure a lack of choice and control. “Indeed, the play is re-titled Romeo & Juliet: A Question of Choice. It is performed with real heart and honesty by the group.” Eccleston acts as narrator for the play, in which many parts are taken played by a learning disabled actor, with the cast bolstered by professionals in key roles. Mrs Clegg said: “Robert Maxfield holds the show together as Juliet's dad, as well as the piano accompanist. “Andrew Brown is a spirited Romeo and Valerie Hughes, who does the talking for Juliet, played by Julie Sheridan as her companion, impresses. “But essentially this is a group achievement. Romeo and Juliet will never be quite the same again!” Celebrity Pig devise, produce, and perform in major public productions both on stage and on screen. They rehearse weekly in Wythenshawe, Manchester. The company used to be supported by the Manchester Learning Disability Partnership, but decided that they wanted more independence, and received support from MENCAP until the company becomes a charity in its own right. Romeo and Juliet: A Question of Choice will be performed at Strode Park House in Herne, near Herne Bay, on September 5 and 6. The play starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.50, with concessions £7. What a pity for the actors of Celebrity Pig. They should have told the Kent news before they posted the information. Thanks Dena.

Agreed with you Prue Reminds me of what happened to the alleged production of "School of Night" and how that was cancelled. I hate people screwing us all up because I know full well what frustrations everyone has over that - I know as I (and many others) were so pleased to see Christopher back "treading the boards" for a season. :-/ I was seriously thinking of going down to Kent and see it again because the last times (and only) I have seen Celebrity Pig's production of "Romeo and Juliet - A Question Of Choice" was at the Lowry, in Salford back in May 2006. I wish they could put it on at the Richard Attenborough Theatre (this arts space is purposely designed for the disabled) and/or Curve (Juliette Binoche's only outside London appearance BTW in the Midlands next February) Theatre in Leicester because it would go down a storm. Not that am biased because it's my home theatre neither. Dena I have just checked myself and yes it has been cancelled. :'( Ecclesno9 ^o) Edited by ecclesno9, Sep 4 2008, 06:59 PM.

Oh, what a pity. :( I was really hoping that some of you girls may get there to see him. It would have been such an event for all of us. And a pretty good oocassion for Celebrity Pig to show their talent. Hope there will be a next time for them, it is so heart-warming to see Chris being so committed to CP and its actors. |

I recieved that news in my email, only realising it came a bit late, (but found out here above it was cancelled), as I recieved that email news on the Monday it said it was going to be on the Friday, but it would've been the Friday gone. As I'm from Kent, I would've hoped to gone and see it. And hearing Chris would've been in my county. |
