The clouds rolled past at a snailturtle's pace, giving Aang plenty of time to gage their shapes. His large blue eyes focused on a rather large cloud that they were flying beneath, adjusting his arms, which he rested behind his head. Appa let out one of his deep, rumbling grunts as a chilly wind blew through his fur, and Aang's eyes grew ever wider as the same wind reshaped his watching-cloud.

"Look, Katara!" Aang said loudly, his giggling voice rising to break the silence that had hovered over them ever since they left the Northern Water Tribe. "That cloud looks just like Momo!"
Momo's distinctive chatter was the second noise to fill the quiet sky. His large ears perked up, and he flapped his wings twice to fly across Appa's saddle and reach Aang. Aang sat up quickly, just at the wrong moment, and recieved a full face-worth of Momo fur. As the little lemur slipped off of Aang's face, his wide grin was still in place, undeterred.

"Mmm... Momo..." Sokka snored, rolling over in his sleep, lying in his favorite spot at the other end of Appa's saddle.

Aang created a rush of air to lift himself up from his seat upon Appa's head, gliding down Appa's neck as if it was a large, fluffy slide. He crossed his legs guuru-style and seated himself next to Katara by cutting off his gust of air. All without a sound, so as not to wake up Sokka--or bother Appa. The large sky bison was in a grumpy mood from flying all night long; Aang could tell when his best fuzzy friend was in a bad mood.
Instead, he kept his attention on Katara, his smile as wide as could possibly be. Without him meaning to, his smile was always that way when he looked at Katara... it just happened. And, as far as he knew, Katara accepted it and just smiled back.

Katara felt a gust of air coming from right next to her, breaking her from her daze as she stared down at the necklace in her hand. She had been thinking about her mother more than ever since they had arrived at the Northern Water Tribe. Being around others like her just made her think back to the day when her mother was taken from her. She had been protecting her and that caused her fateful end.

She glanced over to Aang, who was smiling widely next to her. She returned the gesture with a smile of her own. "Hey Aang. What are you up to?" she questioned. She had no idea why because there wasn't much to do up here on Appa far away from the ground.

"Hey Aang. What are you up to?" Katara asked him, looking at him with those beautiful blue eyes that looked just like the ocean.

"I was watching the clouds and this wind blew through and I saw Momo and..."
Aang's rambling came to a stop when he saw that she had no idea what he was talking about. She was touching her necklace... maybe she had been sorting through memories. His 'amazing Momo-shaped cloud' probably wasn't very important compared to those memories.

"Uhm... but mostly nothing," Aang replied, shrugging his shoulders. Appa let out another grunt-rumble, scaring Momo away from his head (since the little lemur had been bothering him ever since Aang had left). Momo scampered away with tons of extra enthusiasm, zipping all the way over to where Sokka was lying. After all, he had mumbled his name a moment ago.
Momo slapped himself against Sokka's face as well, taking the experience from Aang and assuming it would make Sokka smile... nope.

"Nn-yaah!" Sokka sat up quickly, those ab muscles working quickly enough to launch Momo off like a sling-shot. The little lemur shreiked in his small voice as he was flinged right over the edge of the saddle, and Aang's smile broke.

"Uh-oh--Momo!" Aang shouted, starting to hop up onto his feet, but bashing his face on the floor of the saddle when his legs became stuck because of their intertwined state. With all the comotion, Sokka had jumped to his feet and rushed the the edge of the saddle in a sleep-walker's daze, staring over the edge.

"Momo?!" Sokka called, followed by Aang's muffled voice calling the same thing.

As Sokka flung Momo over the edge of the saddle, Katara dropped the necklace and placed her hand over her mouth as she gasped.

"Uh-oh--Momo!" Aang shouted as he tried to get up, but fell face first into the brown saddle. She scurried up to her knees and moved to the other side of the saddle, looking over the edge to see if she could find Momo among the clouds. She looked around but wasn't able to find any sign of him.

"Aang, we have to go down and find him. I can't see him anywhere!" Katara exclaimed as she continued to look, just in case she had missed something.

"Aang, we have to go down and find him. I can't see him anywhere!" Katara exclaimed.
Sokka quickly added, "Any other time, I would disagree with whatever she said, but this time I can't--Momo's life's on the line!"

Aang understood their worry-- and shared it himself!-- but, as his eyes, full of shock and worry, scanned over the clouds, he couldn't tell what was beneath. What if just beneath the clouds was a thousand-ship fleet of Fire Nation naval ships? He could put them all in danger if he decided to send Appa down and chase after Momo...

"Aang?" Sokka questioned, and Aang broke away from the horrible thought.

"...Right," Aang finally answered. He created a gust of wind, hurtling himself off the saddle and landing at its tip. He grabbed onto the reigns while still in the air, tugging on them to direct Appa down. The huge sky bison rumble-grunted and tilted his head down, begining to fly lower, nearly nose-diving straight through the barier of clouds.

"We're coming, Momo!" Aang called, getting a mouth-full of clouds.

"Just. Don't. Die!" Sokka called through cupped hands.

Then they broke free of the clouds, coming back into open air--this time with only the distant ground below them. Aang was suprised to see that they were not above ocean, but a few hundred feet above sturdy land. He looked over to Katara and Sokka, wondering if they knew where they had found themselves. But neither seemed like they were worrying about their location just yet--both were scanning for little Momo.
Sokka leaned further over the edge of the saddle and peered through narrowed slits, searching the mixture of green and brown of the landscape (much welcome from the previous never-ending whiteness of the clouds). He thrust out his arm and pointed a finger when he saw a white dot on the horizon. "I spy Momo!"

"Aang, head down to the left. Sokka thinks he sees him!" Katara relayed to the young boy, hoping that he would be able to hear her over Appa's grunting.

"Okay," Aang replied, tugging the reigns left. Appa obeyed, slowly drifting toward the left.

"Can't this giant fuzzy monster go any faster?" Sokka complained, waving his arm and pointing it again at the white dot. "We're not gonna catch Momo in time!"

"Cummon, buddy. Faster," Aang ushered, Appa acknowledging by grunting back. He dipped his horned head lower, picking up speed as he neared closer to the ground. The white dot got larger and larger, closer and closer, and it seemed like they were going to make it in time! Sokka uncurled his fingers to reach out and grab Momo, and he closed them around the white figure as Appa pulled up (so as not to hit the tree-tops).
Aang got ready to celebrate, but when he looked back, Sokka had a confused expression and a fistfull of nothing. Aang craned his neck to look back, and caught sight of a disappearing cloud of white smoke.

"Another Momo-cloud..." Aang sighed.

"If that wasn't Momo, then... does that mean...?" Sokka began to ask, hanging his head. Aang started to do the same, when Katara began to speak.

"Let's not think that, you two. If there's smoke, then maybe someone's down there. They might have even seen Momo!" she said with a reassuring smile, trying to life the other two's spirits.

"We could always try going down to see. Couldn't hurt, right?"

"Right," Aang replied quickly, automatically smiling back. He tightened his hands on the reigns and tried to find a clearing in the forest where he could land Appa, keeping in mind where the smoke had been--they'd have to travel on foot to get back, since big ol' Appa didn't fit through trees well.

"If they've seen Momo, then they've probably eaten him by now...!" Sokka said in dismay, his head still hanging, the wind blowing his ponyhawk.

"Not everyone is as hungry as you are, Sokka," Aang said right away, keeping up his optimism as he laughed at the memory of when Sokka first saw Momo (and had wanted to eat him). "It's probably some nice old hermit who made the campfire."

"You think a hermit is less hungry than me?" Sokka asked in a disgruntled mumble. His stomach was growling about as loud as Appa was rumble-grunting, which let Aang know why he was also in a grumpy mood. And walking on an empty stomach would make him even more moody... Thankfully, there was a clearing not too far from the smoke; actually, it could have been where the campfire that created the smoke was. Aang felt very hopeful as Appa's large body colided lightly against the ground (basically 'landing'). The three hopped out of the saddle, their feet sinking into the lush grass of the clearing.

"Now get some rest, buddy," Aang smiled and patted Appa's side before heading off in the direction of the smoke. Sokka got a head start, his long legs prancing over the un-trimmed grass. His nose was up in the air, sniffing up a storm.

"What's that wonderful aroma? There's gotta be food ahead--Meat!" he cried out joyfully, leaping another few feet ahead of the group. Aang laughed, then looked beside him and quieted down. He was walking right next to Katara.

"...And a moment ago he was worried sick that Momo would be the meal," Aang said to her, trying to spark a conversation. She still had the dreamy look she'd had earlier, her deep blue eyes looking as if she was thinking about the past. He still didn't know much about her, besides: 1) her name (Katara), 2) that she had a brother (Sokka), 3) she was a waterbender, 4) her father had left to fight in the war, and 5) she had lost her mother a long time ago. And that necklace, which he could see Katara's fingers sliding against, had belonged to her.

Katara looked over at Aang and processed what he said. She giggled a bit, a small smile coming onto her face.

"Well, Sokka's unpredictable on an empty stomach. We should probably hurry to catch up with him," she said as she placed the necklace back around her neck before hurrying off after her brother who was still running towards the camp in hopes of finding food.

At the small camp, a young girl with silvery-white hair pulled back into a bun was sitting beside a campfire, making herself a meal to eat when she heard a squeal coming from high above her. She looked up and saw a small white spot falling closer and closer to the ground. She squinted her eyes to see if she could recognize the object, but she really had no need -- the object was getting closer and closer. She stood up and hurried over to where she thought it was going to fall and held out her arms. As she did, a small white and brown lemur fell right into her arms and clung onto her. She smiled and patted the animals back lightly.

"It's okay, you're alright..." she said in a soothing voice. As she continued to mutter kind words to the animal, she could hear and feel him calming down in her arms and he let go of her somewhat so that he could look at her with his big, round eyes. She smiled and giggled as she spoke. "There you go. All better?" She questioned. The lemur nodded and she smiled more. "Good."

She looked up from where the lemur came but saw nothing but clear skies. She shrugged a bit and made her way back to the fire. "Are you hungry little guy?" she asked the animal as she sat down back next to the fire. "I was just about to start eating myself, but I don't mind sharing."
