Alex couldn't find the words to respond to Briana, so he just gave her a weak smile in return to hers. He took the mug she extended, giving her a hoarse "Thanks" and clearing his throat afterward, once he heard how choked his voice had become. He pulled the cuff of his sleeve down over the thicker half of his palm, wiping it against his eyes to make the tears disappear. His eyes were red and puffy still, but it was the best he could do. He lowered his hand again to warm his cold fingers against the hot mug, looking down at his reflection in the steaming cocoa. He looked like a mess. Then again, so did Briana. They were on the same level right now, her reminded himself. Looks and appearances didn't matter to her, it seemed. He nodded to her question, realizing she'd asked it. "Uh.. movie," he chose, making sure to be more specific, since it was an either-or question. But really they could do both.. he just wasn't sure what he would say. Briana seemed like she would be up for listening to anything, though. Maybe even all of it... if he was up for talking about all of it, that was. And he didn't know if he was. "I feel like The Hangover would be appropriate. It'd take our minds off things.. and I know Daniel would've loved it." He held his arm out to show her the way to the livingroom. "Maybe," Katrina responded, her voice muffled by the toothbrush stirring up gobs and gobs of foamy toothpaste in her mouth. She looked away from him, but caught his cute glances in the mirror, which caused her to smile and give the foam an escape rout. She caught it in time, thankfully, but it made her blush an even brighter red. Ohhh, this was no good! She looked like a little schoolgirl, blushing like this. What would he think of her? She spat out a little excess toothpaste, not wanting her mouth to overflow like it had been trying to.. She didn't know if she could handle that much extra embarrassment in front of him. She straightened her back again from leaning over the sink, and cocked her head to the side as a strange noise filled her ears. That wasn't Jack laughing at her.. it sounded more like... a cellphone? "...Uhm, ish tha' yewr pho'e ri'gi'g?" she garbled out just as the phone rung again. |

She nodded. Choosing a comedy would be the best way to get their minds off of the significance of the day. Though she knew that his mind would never let him forget what happened, not even for a few moments so that he could know what it felt like to be free of the torture that the thoughts constantly put him through. With her free arm, Briana looped hers through the one he offered her and followed him silently to the living room. It wasn't too far, just around the corner from the kitchen and she released his arm so that he could find the movie and set things up. She sat herself down on the couch and curled her legs up onto it, making sure to leave room on the cushion beside her for him. She blew on the cocoa to cool it down as she watched him. She hated being emotional in front of people. The only time she would ever really cry would be in her room when she was by herself. Maybe she should get back onto her medication... Of course, she'd have to go to the doctor to renew her prescription. "Huh?" he asked, his toothbrush sticking out of his mouth as he tried to comprehend her question. Though he was drawn from his thoughts when he heard the noise of his ringtone filling the air. Without dropping the brush from his mouth, he darted out of the bathroom and jumped onto his bed, grabbing his iPhone off of the counter and answering it without checking the caller ID. "Hewwo?" "Jack?" Zack's voice filtered into the room. In Jack's rush, he had accidentally hit the speaker phone button on the touch screen. "Uh-huh," the man responded as he sat up on his bed, pulling the brush from his mouth and a small bit of foam dribbling down his chin. "You okay? You sound... odd." "'eah, jus' busy," Jack spoke as some more foam came from his mouth. He got off the bed and moved into the bathroom, spitting out the toothpaste. "That's better. What do you want?" "I just wanted to see if you gave Katrina my number like I asked. I haven't gotten a call from her or anything," Zack said with a genuine concern in his voice. |

As Alex popped the DVD into the loading slot, he turned to see Briana's slender form curl up on the couch, her face lighted by the neon-like light of the TV screen flickering on. He saw that there was plenty of space on the couch, but after the DVD player closed and he pressed the play button, he still hesitated a moment. "Why.." he started, wanting to ask 'Why are you bothering?' Why did she even care? They hardly knew each other... "..Why don't I pop some popcorn?" he offered, standing up quickly and heading back toward the kitchen, trying to block the unhealthy questions from his mind. She was a nice person, that was all that mattered. "Adds to the movie experience," he added, awkwardly stumbling over his words as the previews flashed across the screen, highlighting Briana's wide, concerned eyes. He dipped around the corner, out of sight. Whatever motives there were behind that caring gaze, he should just be grateful she was directing some love his direction. Lord knows he needed some. "Ish tha'..?" Katrina mumbled, the toothbrush falling from her mouth as her jaw dropped, but was luckily still firmly grasped in her hand. She caught sight of the look on Jack's face as the slightly tin-y voice poured out of his cellphone's speakers and filled the bedroom, then the bathroom as Jack rushed back in and spit out his mouthful of toothpaste. Katrina nearly swallowed hers in panic, but held off from doing that--because that was just a bit too nasty. When Jack straightened back up, Katrina quickly leaned over the sink in his place and cleared her mouth for use. "Zack?" she questioned as she popped back up. "Zack, is that you?" |

Briana's eyes followed him as he moved around the corner and disappeared into the kitchen. He seemed to be uncomfortable. Was it because of her? After all, they didn't know each other very well and yet she was there for him when no one else was. Maybe it was just her caring nature, but she knew that if anyone had seen Alex the way she had as she looked out that window, they wouldn't have let him sit out there all by himself in the cold. She used one of her hands to tuck some hair behind her ear. It didn't matter if she looked appealing--this wasn't about that. She was here to bring him out of that lonely state that he could have been stuck in for the rest of the day had she not found him. She turned her eyes back to the television to look at the previews, but none of them really sunk in. She was too busy wondering what the two would do after the movie was over. Would they just continue with a marathon of sorts? She didn't want to leave him alone again. Maybe she could just wait until he fell asleep before she went back to Rian like she'd promised. "Katrina? What are you... How did you get there?" Zack asked, confounded. He was sure that Katrina would have gone back home with Briana. Maybe Briana hadn't gone home, so she was somewhere else and Jack found her? Jack handed the phone over to Katrina so that he could finish brushing his teeth in silence. He was obviously looking to talk to her anyway. Edited by Chocolate Bear, 11 Jul 2010, 23:46.

After Alex had put a bag of buttered popcorn into the microwave and pressed start, he peeked back around the corner of the wall that divided up the rooms. He was slightly startled to find Briana's eyes wandering over in that direction, and he ducked out of sight again. Why was she making him so nervous? She showed him kindness, for heaven's sake! ...Maybe that was why. He'd kinda bared his feelings in front of her, and he wasn't so comfortable with that. It felt good, but.. it scared him. She scared him. ...Wow. He felt pretty pathetic. "Uh," he turned the corner, appearing back in her sights. "It'll take another minute or so, but.. I'll bring out some popcorn soon, I promise. It's almost done," he updated her, forcing a smile onto his face as an offering of peace. "..I'm not missing any good previews, am I?" He had to break this awkward silence. That was where his nerves took over--and he couldn't have that. He already felt depressed, he didn't want to get all jittery too. "I.. uhm," Katrina gulped--Zack didn't sound to happy to hear from her. Had she done something wrong? "I didn't have a place to stay last night, so... I just sorta followed Jack home," Katrina admitted, biting her lower lip for a moment and placing the toothbrush under the running faucet to clean it off. "Am I in trouble?" |

She looked back over when she heard his voice. He had come back into the room and was giving her a smile. She let one take over her lips again as she looked at his eyes and their gazes connected. "Not really. I'm sure you've seen them all before. It's kind of old... I mean they have a preview for the sixth Harry Potter movie. That came out months ago," she said as she ran her fingers through her dark locks. "Do you need me to come help with anything?" she asked. "In trouble? Oh, no! I just... wasn't expecting to hear from you is all," he explained as he ran his hand through his still slightly wavy hair (he hadn't gotten the chance to straighten it yet that morning). "I was um... Am I interrupting something?" he asked. "Yes," Jack chimed in, sticking his tongue out a little at the phone. "Oh, sorry dude. I guess I'll... uh... call later or something?" Zack wasn't sure what to say. This was so awkward. |

"Do I need.. help?" Alex repeated, starting to crack up, his laughter covering the sound of the popcorn popping. A genuine smile came across his lips; he was scared of her? But she was so cute. Now he just felt a bit silly. The microwave began to buzz, so Alex tried to control his soft chuckles. "It's popcorn.. I think I've got it handled," he replied, turning the corner and snatching the hot bag out of the microwave. "But thanks," he added, popping back around the corner and coming back into the livingroom. The commercial previews kept playing, but Alex didn't pay attention to them; she was right, he'd seen them all before. But he'd never seen anything like her. And he was actually kind of hungry, now that he smelled the popcorn. He ripped the bag open, hot steam pouring out and burning his fingers lightly. "Ow.." he grumbled, sitting down next to her on the couch before his jitters could make him rethink it. He was close, but there was enough space between them that it wasn't too uncomfortable... and, actually, he could feel her warmth. It reminded him of the hug she'd given him earlier. Maybe step by step, he would grow to be comfortable with this. She was growing on him. "Mmm.. wyant shum?" he offered through the handful he'd shoved in his mouth, holding out the bag to her. "Oh.. OK," Katrina said quietly, turning off the faucet. It got really quiet, really fast. "But, uhm.. Are you sure you want to go?" she asked, clutching the phone closer to her ear, trying to privatize the conversation without turning the speakerphone off. "I mean, you just called, and..." Katrina paused. She wasn't sure what she was looking to hear. And she certainly didn't know what to say. "H-How was your evening?" she asked, to prolong the conversation. She realized that she had sort of missed hearing his voice. |

"Sure," Briana responded with a small laugh laced in with her words. She reached in and grabbed a handful, placing it on the hoodie over top of her chest. The best thing that boobs were used for was a shelf for food in her opinion. She picked up a piece and popped it into her mouth, looking at Alex. "You did well, Mr. Gaskarth." Katrina sounded almost disappointed when he said that he was going to get off of the phone. Did she really want to talk to him? But... they were in the middle of something. Did that mean that she... she liked him a little bit more? At least to the point where she'd drop whatever it was they were doing to talk to him? A smile came to his lips. "It was alright. I was a little worried when I didn't hear from you though," he admitted with a bit of a nervous laugh. |

"Why thank you, miss... uhm," Alex paused a moment, his cheeks flushing. He had cried in front of this woman, and yet he didn't know Briana's last name. Awkward. "I'm really sorry to have worried you," Katrina apologized quickly, a smile creeping across her face. It actually kind of flattered her that Zack had worried about her... did that mean what she thought it meant? Her excited eyes flashed back over to Jack, whose face didn't look as cheerful as it once had... She was sort of ignoring him for Zack right now, wasn't she? Her smile faded. "I was just a bit busy... and I'm uhm... I'm kinda busy still, actually." Her voice crackled into the static-y phone like embers fading in a dying fire. "Could I..uhm.. call you back later?" |

"Miller. It's okay, I wouldn't expect you to know my last name," she said as her smile grew. She heard the music of the menu playing and glanced to the television. "Looks like it's time. You ready to laugh your ass off?" she asked as she glanced back over at him. She hoped that he really was. She knew he needed this escape. "Oh. Yeah, that's fine." Zack was upset that she had to go. He could listen to her talk all night. "Just take down my number and call me whenever you two get done with... whatever you're doing." "Okay, thanks. Bye," Jack said quickly as he took the phone from Katrina and hit the end button. His jealousy was overwhelming. |
