Alex paused a moment, looking at the hand that Briana had extended to him... she knew, didn't she? There was no way he was getting out of this without an explanation. He held in a sigh, instead giving her a small smile, and praying it didn't look as forced as it felt. He took her hand and stood from the chair, taking the lead once they'd started walking toward the kitchen, due to his longer legs giving him a wider gait. He was the first to reach the doorway, so he pushed the door further open, holding it open for Briana to pass through. Might as well be a gentleman... though he was tempted to close the door behind her and run away. But he just then realized how cold he was, and decided against that.

"Oh wow, brr," he said, his skin kicking in with a noticeable shiver. He guessed he sort of lost himself while he was out there; losing touch with reality and forgetting about his physical needs? ...That didn't sound so good. He was really going to be in for it when this conversation started. He was already dreading it, and he had hardly stepped inside the doorway.

Katrina gave a quiet laugh at Jack's chosen words of comfort. "I guess I should be glad we weren't doing anything worse then, hmm?" she said, wiggling her eyebrows and giving another laugh. "But then again..." she bit her lip again, looking up at him with big eyes and trying her best to be seductive while her hair was a mess and she'd just been startled awake. The way he was looking at her told her that he didn't much mind her flawed morning look. "Whatchya thinkin' 'bout?" she asked in her cutest voice. 'Please be about making out,' she thought to herself. One could only hope.

Briana followed as Alex led her towards the house. She watched him, her eyes looking for any sign of what might be wrong. Besides the possibility of there having been tears on his face moments before she had approached and the cold that radiated from is fingers as she clasped them in her hand, there weren't any telltale signs. Once that door was closed, she would be investigating.

"Do you want me to make you any tea or something? You must be freezing..." she offered as she stepped through the doorway that he held open for her. She made sure to keep her voice quiet so that she wouldn't wake up Rian.

"How I genuinely could not have been any luckier in finding you," he responded as he let his lips curl into a sleepy smile. He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips before he realized that his breath probably wasn't very appealing. He pulled away and made a face. "Sorry. Morning breath."

"I'm not so into tea," Alex said as he shut the door behind him, looking for the next exit. There had to be a way out of this...
He looked back at Briana and saw the caring expression in her eyes, though, and his feet felt like lead. This was the first time all day anyone had even made an attempt to console him.. and she probably didn't even really know what was going on.
That kind of compassion always got to him. He couldn't run away from her now, his heart had taken over his body. Or his extremities had finally frozen. He wasn't quite sure.

"...But I wouldn't mind some hot chocolate," he added, looking down and away from her steady gaze, and blowing warm air on to his hands. "Do you.. uh.. know where it is? 'Cause I can help," he offered, reaching up for the cabinet that held the mugs.

"Mmm.. that's OK," Katrina hummed, smiling up at him, grateful for the good morning kiss. "I probably have it too," she added, "Like dragon's breath. Blahhh!" She snuggled her face into the middle of his chest in a play-attack, laughing afterward. She was OK with sounding a little loopy; after all, they'd just woken up. She didn't really have much energy for thinking up logical statements.. she didn't even have enough at the moment to feel like lifting her head back up from his chest.

"Do you want to brush teeth?" she asked, her voice muffled by his body.

"Well, I could just go on a scavenger hunt, but I think your help would be best," she said with a small smile. "I can get the water boiling though." She knew she could manage that. She saw the kettle sitting on the back of the stove and grabbed it by the handle, filling it up with water from the sink and putting it back on the stove to heat up. She turned to look at him as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"So tell me," she began as she watched him pull two mugs from the cabinet. "What had you so wrapped up in your thoughts that you would sit in the cold alone?" Though her words may have seemed cold, there was a warmth behind them. The caring feeling that she felt for him was evident in her voice and her eyes.

"I don't really want to, but I know I should," he responded as he pet her hair down a moment before patting the top of her head. "Want me to find a spare tooth brush for you?"

Alex placed two mugs on the countertop, setting them down without much regard as to whether they clanked or not-- Rian would sleep through anything. A big brass band could come storming through the kitchen, and he'd still be fast asleep. It made it a lot easier for Alex to do things late at night when he couldn't fall asleep... such as now.
Though his peaceful quiet-time outside had been a prettymuch silent anyway. Until Briana came along.

Why was it that girls always wanted to talk thing out?

"Nothing," Alex started out, pulling a box of instant hot chocolate from the cupboard and not looking her in the eyes. As he pulled two packets out of the box, he caught sight of that look she was giving him-- the same as before. All that caring and kindness and warmth.... Agh! He couldn't help himself. He caved.

"Actually.. I'm just going to be honest with you," he started again, sighing as he tossed the packets next to the stove, putting the box away without checking if it was even closed. "I.. I was thinking about my brother, Daniel. Today was the anniversary of his death."
The honest admittance made his heart clench a little, and he gritted his teeth-- No way would he sob in front of her.

"Please," Katrina replied, tilting her head back and scrunching up her nose in a mock disgusted-face. "Clean mouths with fresh breath are undeniably more kissable." She began to uncurl her arms from around him and slink off, heading toward the edge of the bed that pointed toward what she assumed was the door leading to the bathroom.
"In here?" she asked, looking back at him just to make sure. She didn't want to walk into a closet or something.

Briana's chest tightened and her eyes widened a bit. How had she not known about this? Surely someone must have said something... The way that Alex looked right now, as if someone had torn his heart out and thrown it back out into the cold, made her chest ache. She wanted to reach out and hold him, never letting him go to make everything better. But she knew that it wouldn't help. She hardly knew him.

"I... I'm so sorry..." her voice was almost inaudible as it took all the breath she had in her lungs to even push that out. It was hard for her to breathe anytime she heard about someone who had lost a loved one. She had never personally lost anyone, but she would always try to sympathize so that the person wouldn't have to go through it alone. Though this was merely the anniversary, it was plain to see that it still affected him as if it had just been a week ago.

She wasn't able to think anymore on it as she heard the beginnings of the squeal from the tea kettle. She pulled it off of the heated patch on the stove to keep it from being noisy, turning her back to Alex and giving her the perfect opportunity to allow the tears that she knew would be arising to flood from the depths. She tried to hold them back as they rested on the rims of her eyelids. She grabbed the packets of the hot cocoa mix and poured them into the mugs before picking up the kettle and pouring the steaming water into the cups. She let out a small sniffle and gave away her position on truly how bad she felt. She reached up and swiped at her eyes with the back of her hand.

"That's a lie and you know it," Jack mocked as he let her out of his arms, stretching again to get a kink out of his back. He watched her walk away, his eyes following as her hips swung from side to side. He nodded as she asked if that was the bathroom. He stood up and made his way over, placing his hand on her hip as he reached out with the other to open the door and flip on the lights.

"Everything you should need is in here. There's an extra tooth brush... here," he said as he rummaged through a drawer and pulled out a tooth brush that was still in its casing. "And you can use my special toothpaste." He tugged up a bottle of teeth cleaning solvent and revealed the design on the front. Emblazoned on the tube was a picture of Spiderman. "I like to think that Spiderman is attacking the plaque."

Alex felt his eyes burning with the familiar sensation of tears welling up, only it stung a lot more now that he noticed how cold and frostbitten his body felt. His skin admonished him for sitting out in the snow so long, his ears burning as they took in the heat from the warm kitchen... and the sound of a soft sniffle. Alex could tell that Briana had started crying.

Squeezing his eyes shut to kill off the tears before they had the chance to start, he grimaced-- This was his time. He didn't want to have to worry about her crying.. she shouldn't be crying, she didn't even know Daniel. Why was she crying?

Then it dawned on him; she was crying for him.
Again, her kindness made him cave. How could this complete stranger care so much for him that she would.. cry the tears he was too afraid to cry in public? He took a step forward and approached her, settling his hand on her shoulder. She gave a little bit of a startled jump, just enough that he could feel her shoulder tense beneath his palm. He took the kettle from her, setting it back down on one of the cool burners that hadn't been in use.

"It's OK.." he told her softly, fully knowing that it wasn't.

Katrina smiled wider than her body felt ready for-- the tired muscles in her jaw felt like they were cramping a little, but she grinned all the same. Spiderman toothpaste? He was sure a dreamboat.

"Haha, that just makes me think that my mouth is full of Green Goblins," Katrina responded, letting her inner dork run free. She felt really confident around him, like she didn't have to hide anything.. I mean, they'd bared all already. And he'd already protected her from the most frightening thing she could imagine, the close-to-walk-in mother fiasco. And with his hand gently holding her close by her hip, she didn't feel like anything could ruin this. Not even her horribly dorky side could hurt this budding romance; especially since Jack had quite the adorable dorky side too, it seemed.
She had been fiddling with the packaging around her toothbrush and failing miserably in her attempt to open it for a few moments now. She made a pouty face, her cheeks aching as they finally got to relax.

"Uhm.. a little help please?" she asked softly, with big puppy-dog eyes and a tiny smile.

"I'm sorry..." she whispered again as she tried to contain her tears. There was no use. They slowly trickled down her cheeks as she turned to look up at him. The way that he was trying to comfort her even though this was the time for him to be riddled with sadness... it was strange. Then again, she was the one crying even though she hardly knew him.

She reached out her hands and pulled him into a hug. Both to comfort herself and in the hopes that maybe it would help him bring his guard down. She wouldn't judge him. After all, she was crying like a baby right now.

Jack puffed out his chest a bit as she called for help.

"Never fear, Jack is here!" he proclaimed as he took the package from her. Deciding to go for the melodramatic approach, he took the casing in both hands and tore it down the center with a battle cry. He took the tooth brush in one hand and handed it over. "That may have been a little much. Here you go."

Briana turned to face him again, not even trying to hide the tears flowing freely down her cheeks...
How he wished he could be so open.
After years of trying to control the pain and hide it away, it felt so odd to receive a hug of comfort... or see tears shed for him. This was exactly the sort of thing he had wanted, he realized. Just to have someone be there to.. to vent to. Someone that wouldn't judge him for being less than his usual perky self.
Someone who would help him be that open.

"Shh.. It's OK," he repeated, his arms wrapped around her in return, his hands pressing against her mid-back and cupping the back of her head. "It's OK." His voice was wobbly due to the tears he was choking back, but slightly stronger thanks to the empowerment of her hug. And as he felt her arms holding him tight, her face pressed against him and her hot tears soaking into his shirt, he finally let his own tears spill from his eyes. Crying in her presence wasn't horrible... it actually gave him a bit of the relief he'd been searching for. More than just the bitter tears of a lonely brother wallowing in self-pity... he was sharing a moment with someone. At last.

"I'm sorry too," he whispered.

"Nonono!" Katrina assured him, laughing hysterically at his adorable melodrama as she took the freed toothbrush from his hands.
"You're cute," she told him, her lips letting the words out before her mind's filters kicked in. Now that was something morning loopiness didn't account for... Turning on the faucet, she wetted down the toothbrush before squirting some toothpaste on to it, keeping her gaze down.
"I.. I mean, I like your enthusiasm." She popped the toothbrush into her mouth, cheeks blushing a bit. Letting secret info slip like that always made her blush...at least, when she wasn't teasing him with little morsels of it.
However, this time she'd made the mistake of divulging confidential information without meaning to.

As Briana held Alex close to her, she could feel his body losing tension and relaxing into her hold. His shoulders shook lightly and she felt small droplets fall onto her shoulder, soaking through the hoodie that she wore. Though this was one of the more sad moments she'd been in, she felt comfortable knowing that she was helping Alex through a hard time just by listening and being there.

After a few more moments, she pulled out of the hug and wiped away the streaks of tears on her cheeks.

"God... I'm sorry. I really shouldn't be crying like this. I get emotional when I'm not on my meds," she said with a small smile. "The hot chocolate is ready." She picked up one mug and handed it to him. She tried to keep herself from crying, but it was hard when she saw the look on his face. She wanted to comfort him, but she also wanted to try and get his mind off of the sadness.

"Do you maybe want to watch a movie? Or do you just want to talk?"

"Cute? Really?" he asked as he wiggled his eyebrows. He grabbed his bright green toothbrush from the cup sitting on the counter, putting some toothpaste on the end and popping it into his mouth as he watched her face turning red. As the paste foamed up in his mouth, he couldn't tell whether it was that sensation or the butterflies fluttering around in his stomach as he watched her that made him almost feel sick. He hoped that he wouldn't barf--that wouldn't be very cute.
