The Chetniks began as a paramilitary force in the Balkans created to defend the local Christian population from Ottoman oppression. The name chetnik derives from the Serbian word četa which means "military company." Being severely out-numbered and out-gunned, the Chetniks relied on guerrilla tactics, courage, and heroism to defend the Christian population and expel the Ottoman invaders.

Peace was short-lived, however. A new menace loomed. Nazi Germany swept through the Balkans, capturing the Chetnik homeland, while Communist forces vied to do the same.

The Chetniks would submit to neither. They escaped to the wilderness and formed roving bands of guerrilla commandos, attacking the Nazi and Communist invaders at every opportunity. They flew the Chetnik flag, a skull and crossbones on black background, representing the death of their nation, surrounded by the rallying cry "With Faith in God - Freedom or Death."

We, the Chetniks clan, carry on that tradition and fighting spirit.
