So a while back I got bored with my time and started replaying Majoras mask. I figured I had been replaying Ocarina over and over so many times that I was due for a change of pace. We all know that Majora's mask takes place some time after the events of Oot, a few months or something. So I started thinking about how connected the two games really are. But I never really thought about it until a few of my bros on twitter started arguing over which Link was the best. I argued that it was the hero of time, because well, hes the fucking hero of time. But that really wasn't an argument. I knew that the hero of time had much more thought and depth than just running around saving people so I got to thinking. What if Ocarina of time and Majora's mask together are telling a story? Not the obvious ones present in both games, but a deep personal inner struggle that Link has within himself. I got to thinking about it, and It totally is. Lets start back at the beginning. Every Kokiri gets a fairy when they are born, its a part of their society and an integral part of their lives. Link on the other hand, never had one growing up. He had to live with being different, being made fun of and living a life of loneliness and depression. Sure Saria was there to comfort him now and then but all in all he was a pretty messed up kid. hell we even see him crying himself to sleep at the beginning of ocarina. Then, Navi comes along. And link Immediately has his spirits raised. After that long childhood of turmoil and sadness he is summoned by the FUCKING GREAT DEKU TREE to go and save the world. I don't know about you, but If that happened to me I would think I could do pretty much anything. Link Values Navi as more than a friend. To Link, Navi is Hope and guidance and the strength to carry on through ANYTHING. so he spends the entire first half of the game PROVING IT TO EVERYONE. Including himself, several times. Through forced time travel he learns of adult like problems and values, and deals with them at a very young age of mind. And after he saves the land of Hyrule, rescues the princess and defeats the king of darkness, Zelda sends him back in time to continue the childhood he never got to have because of ganondorf’s shenanigans. And Navi flies away, never to be seen again. This one, seemingly innocuous even is probably the most important plot point in the entire Zelda series. Link just lost his fairy. What the fuck is he supposed to do now. And so begins Majoras mask, begining with link lost in the woods searching for the one and only person that he ever valued as a true friend. Navi. Without her, Link is nothing. He doesnt believe in himself, he thinks hes a useless sack of worthlessness. Then the skull kid shows up and jacks his horse. Link, still overcome with the loss of confidence, but also not wanting to lose another friend, gives chase. aaand eventually ends up falling into a tree stump that somehow leads him to a parallel universe. through a number of events, Link is joined by one of the skull kids old fairy buddies named tatl. At this point Link and tatl aren't too thrilled about one another, but they’re kinda stuck with each other so they figure, why the hell not. Unlike Navi though, tatl is an asshole. she continuously talks down to link and yells at him for wanting to get information about his enemies. which is a big change of pace for the kid in green. Well, that and being turned into a fucking plant, but you get what I mean. The two come across a creepy dude in the clock tower who sells masks claiming that the one the skull kid is wearing belongs to him, and asks that link get it back. Link, of course, would never EVER think that he could. I mean, would you think you could if you were turned into a deku scrub, lost your ONLY friend in the world, were in a semi crippling depression, and had an abusive glowing bug floating around all the time? No. You fucking wouldn't. But this guy. the Happy mask salesman. He’s actually the first person to tell link that he can do things on his own. He says that link should believe in his own strengths to accomplish his goals, rather than relying on others. So he makes him a deal. If he can get back his ocarina, than he’ll turn the kid back to normal. So Link rethinks his life briefly. and decides the creepy dude is right. also that he’d like to be a human again thanks. So he spends three days playing tag and grabbing tears from the moon. And on the third night, he faces off against the skull kid who somehow seems a lot more menacing than he did when he just stole his horse. Evil even… oh god the moon is falling what the ever loving Christ. So link spits on him, Grabs his ocarina and warps back to three days ago before the moon crushes them flatter than any pancake that has ever been. Having accomplished his task at hand, and after being turned human again, Link now has the confidence to take on the world himself, and along the way him and tatl encounter many people with problems of their own, whom link may or may not help along the way depending on whether you want all the heart pieces and the Fierce Deity’s mask. Link learns that he can do things on his own, and those around him learn their own respective lessons as well. Tatl becomes less of a bitch and actually grows quite attached to link, Kafei and anju learn that Love can transcend age, even if its just physical…or something. By the end of the game, link is his own man, and having saved the world and helping the lives of many, sets off for bigger and better things, despite the fact that there's a carnival in town that he could easily go to. Fuck the carnival hes got worlds to save. The happy mask salesman, having discretely fulfilled his role as a mentor, disappears into nothingness. Seriously that's what happens. and I still don't get why either, is he a ghost or something? what... never mind. So to sum it all up, Link goes through a lot. A LOT. both physically and emotionally. This underlying character that link has most of the time goes largely unnoticed by the majority of people who play the games, and as such they wind up missing out a little. This is also the reason I love Navi so much as a character, rather than hating her for all her incisive nagging, which can at times get on my nerves. but sometimes its just nice to know someones looking out for you, and given link’s situation, I’d say that cheering and help did him a lot of good. So next time she says "hey!" you bet your ass you better listen. Edited by Darkwind, Jun 15 2011, 03:23 PM.
