No one else can see the preservation of the martyr in me.

Prologue A letter to Lord Tourn, Ruler of All, dated August 1, 2043: “I am very sure you already know of the Great War. However, for you to understand my discovery, I shall start at the very beginning. During the Great War, much of the world’s population was killed. Shortly after the war—and also shortly before you took power—another large portion of the population suddenly died, leaving us with just under one million people. I believe these mysterious deaths were caused by the original outbreak of Degeneration, before the human population could handle this new disease. You do know of Degeneration, correct? It gives those who contract it—“affectionately” called the Infected by you and those you rule—the ability to cast what can only be described as magic. I also understand you have adopted the classification of magic suggested by us scientists. “Shadow” magics being those with the ability to do harm, and “Spirit” magics being those remaining. The purpose of this classification is purely natural. The Infected seem to follow a pattern of having the ability to use one or the other. (There are rare exceptions, and we would love to have one as a test subject.) We have not yet determined if this is caused by two different strains of the disease. Now, then, to continue with the history leading up to my discovery. When you ordered the army to kill all those that had contracted Degeneration, the few that survived the attack were given to us to be used as test subjects. No cure has yet been discovered, and we have nearly no idea about what causes the unusual effects of the disease. In fact, we even have absolutely no information about where the disease came from. That is not what we were ordered to find, though, was it? You instructed us to find ways to use the disease to our advantage. To find the remaining life expectancy of the Infected. On the latter point, it varies greatly, and we are still unsure as to why. However! We have had far more success on the former. At the very least, my discovery will allow you to kill off the remaining Infected, if not prove to be of much greater use. By infusing the blood of one of the Infected with an object (we have found rings to be preferable) we have created what we like to call Mid-Soldiers. Those that wear these rings can use the “magical” abilities of the Infected, without having to worry about their death in the near future. Do not confuse these rings with something you may find in a fantasy story, though. They must be worn for one day, and will give their power to the wearer at the end of this period. The ring is then useless. One use only. These rings are extremely difficult to create, and as such we currently only have 10 to give you. I believe you will want to pay close attention to this next part. Due to the work necessary to make this discovery, and the difficulty of producing these rings, I feel my fellow scientists and I deserve more credit. Before we will give you the power of the Mid-Soldiers, you must give me the same rank which you yourself hold. I need nothing more than that recognition—you may continue to rule as you see fit. Oh, and one last thing. I have received news that the Infected will be sending someone to rescue the test subject known as Haruki Sasaki. I believe it would be in both of our best interest for you to send me reinforcements…” Sent by Doctor Tim Peccant, Head Scientist of Project GODSEND. Edited by Yusuke, Apr 26 2008, 03:03 PM.

Chapter 1 - Rescue August 12, 2043 All of the prisoners must have heard by now. The Head Scientist—the one responsible for their misery—had been executed on charges of treason. Something like being too ambitious, wasn’t it? It didn’t matter to Haruki Sasaki. He’d been left as a shell long ago. After several escape attempts (and the deaths of a few scientists), he had completely given up. He was now in a cell that was completely shut off from the world. He only ever saw the outside when that door opened and… There was another test subject with him. Haruki assumed he used shadow magic, due to the precautions used by the scientists. However, the two had never spoken to each other. The next morning, Haruki knew, he would be tested on. He shut his eyes and lay down on the floor—there were no beds. May as well get some sleep. * * * August 13, 2043 The remaining Infected, those who were not test subjects, had a camp set up not far from the remains of the city once known as London. In fact, many of the Earth’s major cities had been destroyed in the Great War. Those left untouched—especially in Europe—were likely abandoned due to Degeneration. You could almost say it was another plague. London, however, to a certain extent, had been rebuilt upon the orders of Lord Tourn, whose scientists needed a place for their labs. The Infected did not care that this was London. They were there for a single purpose: to rescue their fellow Infected, specifically Haruki Sasaki. Haruki was specially…skilled with his magic. There were, of course, only 10 enemies in existence that could break through his barriers. Yes, the Mid-Soldiers. He could set up a barrier impenetrable by anything short of magical means. Two people had been chosen for the rescue, Raiden and Kaien, and they would be sent backup if needed. As they were both users of shadow magic, no one expected any difficulty for them. “The two of you will leave shortly,” said Elder Stone, the acting leader (and oldest) of the Infected, hearing a pair of ‘Yes, sir’s in response. “Now,” he said, “you two may go prepare yourselves. Leave when you are ready.” * * * Haruki awoke to the sound of an explosion. An experiment? was his first thought. No, the labs were the other direction. After a short moment of confusion, Haruki realized it. The main entrance. The Gates of Hell he had been brought through so long ago. Someone had just broken in! Before he could feel any more excitement, the cell door opened. A woman, one of the scientists, stood there, ordering Haruki and the other Infected to come with her. Haruki saw this as his chance. He didn’t want to hurt her, but then…she most likely would not have hesitated to do so to him. Before she could even recognize the contact of fist and face, she was out cold on the floor. Haruki ran from the cell. He would’ve taken the other man along, but he was chained to the wall. Haruki would just have to come back for him later. * * * “You go left, and I’ll go right,” Raiden said, immediately colliding with a wall. Kaien looked at him silently for a moment, and then said, “Maybe you should go straight.” Raiden stood up, dusting himself off like nothing happened. The two of them then split up. Not far down the hall, Kaien saw a woman standing there. Her black hair was tied back in a ponytail, and she was wearing clothing that didn’t appear to be that of a scientist. “Hell yeah, baby!” Kaien said to himself, and started sprinting towards her. Without any movement from the girl, Kaien was suddenly flung into the wall. “I can tell you’re one of us,” she said. “Control yourself, would you?” “Not when ya got a body like ‘hat!” Kaien replied, earning himself a slap. Someone else then stepped out from around the next corner. “Which way now, Aerona?” Kaien blinked, then suddenly blurted out, “Hey, ur tha guy I’m sapposed ta be lookin’ for.” The new person, Haruki, said, “So you guys came here just to rescue me? That’s nice…” He then looked back at Aerona, still expecting an answer. “The entrance is in the direction this fool just came from.” “Hey! Tha name’s Kaien!” Kaien said, making a slightly heroic pose. “Alright, Kaien,” Aerona said. “You can get your ass in there and help the rest of the test subjects.” Kaien walked away, pouting, further into the building. * * * Raiden had been walking for quite some time now, and had yet to encounter anyone. He’d seen an empty lab, but that was it. He was also beginning to notice that the building was extremely…quiet. Not even the sound of footsteps from upper floors. Something was clearly wrong here. Just then, a man stepped out in front of Raiden. Raiden looked at him for a moment, then said “Who’re you?” The man smirked. “It’s too bad,” he said. “You guys don’t know it yet, but half of Lord Tourn’s army is here in London.” Raiden’s eyes began to widen in horror. “Oh, don’t worry,” the man said. “You’ll be dead long before they get to you.” |

Chapter 2 - The First of Ten The last thing the man said hadn’t registered with Raiden. “You mean…they knew we were coming?” “Oh yes,” the man said. “Someone informed Doctor Peccant you would be coming.” He paused. “A traitor, perhaps?” Raiden and the man both suddenly seemed to be in a world that was completely pitch black. Not even the ground was beneath them. “Do you like it?” the man said. “The abilities Degeneration gives people are absolutely limitless. For example, I can move us to a completely different dimension, to prevent allies from coming to your aid.” Raiden glanced around for a moment. What the hell? “It’s just too bad that none of us are able to discover more than a very little of the magic we can use,” the man said. “Wait.” Raiden had suddenly realized something. “Are you one of the Infected then?!” “Of course not,” the man replied. “I am Mauricius Sullivan. One of the new Mid-Soldiers.” “A Mid-Soldier?” Raiden asked. “What’s that?” Mauricius smiled. “That’s good. You guys haven’t discovered project GODSEND yet.” Black tendrils began to spiral their way up Raiden’s legs, though he didn’t notice. “The scientists have discovered a way to let us use magic without having the disease. There are ten of us that can…and what’s more, all of us have proven to be able to easily defeat most normal Infected in combat.” Raiden’s eyes widened as he realized he couldn’t move his legs. “You could at least fight fair!” A black aura surrounded his right fist, and both his legs. Raiden leapt towards Mauricius, easily breaking free of the tendrils. He then swung a punch towards Mauricius… …but he never made contact. Mauricius had swung his arm upward, covered in a similar aura, and caught Raiden in the stomach. Raiden was sent flying backwards, coughing up blood as he landed. “Like I said, normal Infected don’t stand a chance against the Mid-Soldiers.” Raiden slowly stood back up, wiping the blood from his lips. “You just got lucky,” he said. Mauricius had on a face that clearly showed he was unsure that that was the case. Raiden ran towards Mauricius again, and just as Mauricius prepared himself to stop Raiden again, Raiden swung at him, too far away to hit normally. The aura around his hand flew towards Mauricius. Mauricius, however, still seemed to be ready. He moved out of the way, and again, mirrored Raiden’s attack, but hit him instead. As Raiden hit the ground again, he and Mauricius suddenly appeared back in the hallway where they’d started. Haruki and Aerona stood just a little ways behind Raiden. “That’s an interesting ability you have,” Haruki said. “However, it seems you don’t know it very well. All you did was create a black sphere in the area you were fighting. The moment we entered it, it disappeared.” Dammit, Mauricius thought. I told them to wait before sending us out. “He may not have known what a Mid-Soldier was,” Haruki continued. “But we’ve been stuck here with these damn scientists for a long time. We know everything that’s been going on.” I can’t take on three of them. Mauricius suddenly ran past them, heading for the main door. The moment Mauritius stepped out, he was immediately killed, having been hit by several bullets and magical attacks at the same time. Lord Tourn’s army and the Infected had found each other. * * * Kaien walked through the halls, wondering how he’d ended up with the job of searching the place. Each time he came to a cell, he destroyed the door, freeing the test subjects. He hadn’t encountered any scientists, but he had yet to notice. He had noticed, though, that most of the test subjects he freed were male. That, and when he released ones that weren’t, it generally resulted in his being slapped one way or another. He wasn’t alone in that. * * * “They sent two freaking perverts to rescue us?!” Haruki stared, open-mouthed, down at the badly injured Raiden. “Aerona!” he said. “I just finished healing him!” Raiden took his turn to contribute to the conversation by groaning. “They could at least be serious until we all get out of here,” Aerona said, now walking (though storming would probably be a better word) away. Rather than follow her, Haruki stayed to heal Raiden…again. “That really wasn’t very smart, you know,” he said. “Hey!” Raiden said, “Who’s the one not hitting on that hot chick, huh?” Haruki made a face and went back to healing Raiden, silently. * * * Elder Stone was not happy with the direction the battle was going. Despite the obvious superiority of magic to guns, the Infected were losing—badly. Somehow their mission had been discovered, and they were attacked at their camp. As they fled into the city, even more of the army was waiting to attack them. Just by glancing at the battlefield, it could be easily seen that the Infected were outnumbered by at least 10 to 1. Raiden and Kaien had better hurry up, Elder Stone thought. We’ll need them and the prisoners in order to win this. Just then, he saw Aerona come out from the building, followed by Haruki and Raiden. Not long after Kaien—and several other Infected—found their way out as well. “Just in time…” * * * “What the hell is going on out here?!” Haruki yelled, immediately having to shield the group from bullets. “They knew we were coming,” Raiden said. “And that Tourn bastard sent half his army to stop us!” He killed a few soldiers with his shadow magic as he said it. Haruki glanced towards the back of the enemy force. There was a man standing on a hill, and appeared to be giving orders to everyone else. He was clearly their commander. “Aerona, Kaien….and you,” Haruki said—he didn’t yet know Raiden’s name. “You three will come with me to kill their commander. If we do the rest of the army should be easy to defeat.” “How tha hell we gonna get back ‘hare?” Kaien asked, with a confused look. “Easy,” Aerona said, running towards the enemy. “We run, and Haruki covers us!” Haruki looked at Raiden and Kaien for a moment. “Well? Go! We need to catch up.” Raiden and Kaien took off after Aerona, with Haruki not far behind. He protected them—and himself—with shields, getting rid of the need to fight their way through. As Aerona reached the hill, she leapt up into the air, and her arm seemed to turn black and extend toward the commander, who blocked the magic with a sword. He then pulled out a gun and shot at her, but she was still protected by Haruki’s shield. Raiden and Kaien were suddenly both there, punching at him with aura-covered fists. He managed to skillfully block every strike with his sword. After a while, Kaien managed to land a strong punch on the weapon, shattering it. The commander jumped back and shot at Kaien, again unsuccessfully. Raiden punched the commander from behind, knocking the gun out of his hand, and temporarily dazing him. Just then, Aerona let out a piercing cry so horrible that the commander had to cover his ears. He was in great pain, and still could not block out the noise—yet, he was the only one that could hear it. Soon, blood began to leak from every possible opening on his head. His hands dropped down from his ears, and he fell to the ground, dead. |
