Hey guys,

I was wondering, if I were to make a studio, what kind of lights do I need?

OT: What other gears should I also get/invest?

i prefer to use strobes... although nice sad ang countinuous, init lang sad siya madugay(makahilis og make-up :D ) and naa siya lag time to get the full power of the light(murag kinahanglan pa e heat up ang light)... if your planning to shoot group shots then get the highest rated watts you can afford... og one or two peps lang i guess 120 - 200 watts ok na... not an expert on this... maybe sir abortretryfail can answer this questions... :D

I just came from Jon Unson's studio assisting him with a
model from California.

His setup has been the same ever since the days I met him nearly
10 years ago.

Two lights... two square softboxes (one big, one medium)...
... other times it's one big softbox on the model then a honeycomb either
for the background or towards the model for a hair or rim light.

Here's some of his work that I could find online...

Here's some of my work with just one 100watt light and a small softbox...

...as my students had the other two for their set up.

How many do you need to start? Just one.

But at least two ~ three light set would be good. I can make do with 100watts
and can light groups of people with two of them.

It's a far cry from what I use to do... bolt a flash to a stand with a 99 peso
white plastic umbrella I got from a mall (with the handle sawed off) and
a veeeeeeerrrrrrry loooooooooooong sync cord which I used for cover shoots,
magazine editorials, furniture, food, and most everything in my first two years
of commercial photography.

other gear you might consider...
background
background stand
reflector
and... oh yeah... loooooooooong extension cords

I got a intro to studio lighting workshop coming up...

...might help you get an idea on what to get.

When I first started using studio lights I had no idea
what I was doing... must've been lucky.

Diri na lang ko ask. I'll be attending a private "shoot" next Friday inside a studio and I'm assuming the organizer will use subdued (but I hope not) lighting. If that'd be the case, where do I get my exposure? From illuminated skin, right? This is my first time to shoot under artificial lighting. Better Google for some tips as well.

shooting is easier, getting the right exposure? just follow ang aperture/opening and iso setting sa imong mga kauban that's it... shutter speed don't matter that much... just use the highest sync speed your camera can do... ;)

(OT) I hope I don't fall asleep since it's in the evening. Paets ani wala exercise, dali ra maluya. Well, it's always lines and curves when it comes to female figures so that's what I should keep an eye out for.

ako nabantayan is dapat mo take sa ka og test shot, then after evaluate sa result para maka hibaw ka unsa setting dapat, since 1/200 ra man kutob ang sync speed then i guess iso and aperture nalang ka mag duwa2x and power sa light...

bring a cheat sheet. go through photographer and model portfolios online.
download pictures for posing and lighting ideas. print out a selection and
bring it along as a guide...

if ever you are given a chance to light the model yourself start with one
light only. it's a lot easier. watch how the light hits and the shadows fall
to bring shape to form.

the best way to start off doing figure is lighting from the side, top, or behind.

you can use the same settings as the people there to start off on then
play around to something more to your liking. the people might like bright
pictures while you prefer dark.

good luck!

(OT) Thanks ARF. I think I'll be alright. I'll probably expose for the brightest lit skin since I want the shadows to be totally black.
