share ko ug high key lighting..

basically from what i understand is this

"High key" simply means that the vast majority of tones in the image are above middle gray, including any shadows. Excluding specular highlights, such as catchlights, there usually is detail in even the brightest areas."

it's not overexposure

more or less ang basic lighting set up for these type of shots
2 lights on background(white) then one at the subject..
light ratio 1:1:1

@p-chan - you're right about your understanding of high key. basta majority of the tones are above mid gray.

Here's one that I did. Pareho sa setup nimo (diagram) except 6x4 softbox (on a stobe head) ang main light nako (camera right 45 deg). I used 7" reflectors on both strobe heads lighting the white background; I evenly directed both (also at 45 deg) at the same height on the background.

Lighting ratio wise, I think I used 1/2 a stop over for the background (to get a little light spill on their inside shoulders). I use a lightmeter to get the ratios. You don't always need a lightmeter but I find it saves me time from chimping.

Hope that helps.

for this shot I used a 42" 5-in-1 reflector (gold) and a sb600 set at TTL +2 compensation set camera right very high (estimate nako it's 8 or 10 ft up)

exif
shutter: 1/80"
aperture: f/1.8
iso: 200

tried to get a shot something like this.. feel nako an umbrella would work just fine..

What does " A fill metered at 2 stops less than the main will give you approximately a 3 to 1 ratio of highlight to shadow" mean? Ref: http://www.lumitouch.com/benstudiotutorial/benji1.html

I read somewhere that this is counterintuitive, e.g., if the main reads at F/5.6, the fill should read at F11 or was it the other way around?

Update: Forget I asked, found the answer here

@fafi montoya:

a fill metered at 2 stops less... <-- you have 2 stops from the main light.. so for example so f/16 imo main light 2 stops down is f/8

3 to 1 ratio of highlight to shadow <-- means from the highlight ang shadow there is a 3 stops difference..

ooppsss... karon ra ko naka basa sa update.. :D

@Fafa p-chan: Thanks. I'm thinking that one of these days, we could have a group-study lighting EB (let's just invite 5-6 people who are really interested) and rent a studio with enough lights and reflectors we could play with. I was happy to buy an old book at Booksale Robinsons titled The Art of Portraits and the Nude (The Kodak Library of Creative Photography) and learn how to make good portraits theoritically. I want to try the lighting diagrams on my toys first but dagnabit where can I find bendable lamps like these here in Cebu to simulate studio lights:

Good idea Fafa. But before we rent it, let's plan the shoot para dili ta gubot. Please find out what lighting equipment they have so we can draw the lighting diagrams as guides. When look for a model, not really a pro as this is a learning session. Maybe we can ask Che and her friend. Then sabot ta rules of engagement especially kung flash strobes and not continuous light. Like in SuperLolo's El Garaje, we took turns shooting. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this :)
