Spring 25 "You know you ought to put a smile on that face, or you're going to get all wrinkly like me." With masked concern, the frail man gave his daughter a stunningly firm hand on her shoulder. She glanced up briefly from her book only to say: "It's a depressing book." "Pah!" Mayor said with a dismissive wave. "You haven't smiled since we got here. Hell, you've hardly uttered a word!" "That's not true, and you know that." "Well, what I do know is that you're trying to hide behind those books, but you're only fooling yourself. I'm going to go pick up some more around the town." Hannah sighed as her father walked out the door of the lobby. If he knew that she was truly unhappy being here with him, well, she knew that it would depress him, and the fact that he was catching on made her feel guilty. She hardly ever helped out, either. Of course, Mayor had asked her to stay at the Inn in case someone came along, but she knew that no one ever would. Hannah was considering helping him out eventually, though. Every single day and night was spent sitting behind the bar, leaning back in a chair with her feet propped up on the counter-top, reading a book. Luckily, reading didn't bore her, but they'd been here for nearly a month, and that, Hannah imagined, was only the tip of the iceberg. Mayor had a persistent nature, and it would be a while before he would give up. Even once he did, he certainly seemed to like it here, so they wouldn't be leaving anytime soon. |

It had not been a very good day so far. Randall was wandering through Central Town's Shopping Centre. He had found a couple of coins on the ground. Antisemitism made itself apparent when other children and even a few adults called Randall a Jew. It was due to the stereotype that Jews were in poverty, but Randall could care less of what people thought of his religious beliefs or what he thought of others. Religion, race, and sex were things that Randall would never discriminate against. On the way towards a food stall run by a vendor on the side of the road, Randall bumped into an old man. "Watch where you're going," Randall told the man. He was very wrinkly and old. He looked awfully familiar. His age suggested that he was an important, ancient figure to Caerus Falls. But who was it? That was a mystery for another time. Right now, Randall wanted to see the price of the food. |

Before Mayor had gotten a few yards away from the Inn, he ran into something, or rather, something ran into him, or both. The tiny man stumbled a bit before regaining himself, and then he saw what he had collided with. It was a boy! The man's mouth went ajar and his eyes grew wide with disbelief. He was speechless! Of course, the boy seemed to take care of breaking the ice on his own. Mayor began to howl. "Oooooooooooooooooooh Hannah! Get out here! You've gotta see this! Life, life! I've found life!" Nevermind if he was scaring the child - he was elated. They'd been here a month and things were looking bleak, but somehow they pulled through. He lifted his cane to tap the kid on the head. "Oh, and he's a grumpy one, he is." |

What a neurotic old man. The voice was definitely the voice of the Mayor: the entire image was familiar now and it matched him perfectly. Although the attention he drew to Randall was unnecessary. The name that he bellowed, Hannah, was unfamiliar. Who was this Hannah? Perhaps a niece or granddaughter. When Mayor tapped Randall on the head he stepped away a little, not veering towards physical contact with the man. He was thrilled and seemed very amazed at the fact that someone was actually there with him. Randall barely knew the Mayor, but apparently the Mayor knew him well. Randall doubted that Mayor would let him go to the food vendor, so he would just have to endure this sudden rendezvous and then hightail out of there. |

Conversely, the Mayor did have some knowledge of hospitality, and he wouldn't let this newcomer go long without some form of welcome. "You've had a long journey, come in, come in!" He scurried toward the entrance of the Inn, muttering to himself. "Hannah! Fix something to eat, we have a visitor! Can you believe it?" He recieved no response. Well, that's odd, he thought to himself. I suppose she's gone somewhere for once. He turned again to the boy, the goofy grin on his face baring his many missing teeth. "Oh, well I'm sure that I can find an easy snack back in the kitchen for ya. You don't want me cooking anything, I'll blow up the whole building. What do you like to eat?" {{ In case there's any confusion about the setting, Caerus Falls is a total ghost-town, the only population being the four characters we have so far. That's why the Mayor is so excited to see Randell. xD }} |

"Oh, we've got a variety," said Mayor. He waltzed into the kitchen and began naming various snacks. "We've got apples, bananas," he called from the kitchen, making quite a ruckus as he rummaged through the food supply. "Kiwis, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, pickles, broccoli, and oh boy do I love Zucchini! You're gonna want that cooked, though. You're not the chubby type, either, so I suppose you could have some junk food; chips, candy, popcorn. But if your hungry I highly recommend you eat something a bit more filling." Mayor popped his head out the kitchen doorway to look at the child, and he grinned. The smile emphasized all his wrinkles, making him look like a truly crazy, old hoot. His teeth were now significantly brown, coated in a layer of candy he'd been munching while he was back in the kitchen. "We have chocolate!" he declared proudly. |

Eugh. Randall hated chocolate. Now what child hates chocolate, you may ask? Not normal children, that's for sure–but Randall has only had one taste of chocolate (it was a small piece of a chocolate bar that his brother Zach had eaten) and after consuming it, Randall vomited. He wasn't sure if it was the rancid taste or an allergic reaction, but he hated the smell of it. And despited any sort of consumption or related product. Trying to be polite, Randall tried to hide the fact that Mayor's delightful sweet tooth for chocolate was completely morbid and revolting. The smell was tough enough to handle, and if Mayor gave Randall a piece of chocolate that would be the end of him. "I'll have an apple or two," he muttered, trying not to gag. |

"Alrighty then!" Mayor proclaimed. He disappeared into the kitchen once more and came out with a colorful armful of apples, even though he didn't look strong enough to carry them. He sat the fruits on the bar and grabbed himself a granny smith, taking an eager bite. "All these apples grew close to the forest," he explained with a full mouth, however unlikely that a child would be interested in such trivia. "It's real convenient to have food growing here already, without havin' to make an effort. There's enough to do around here already." "So I take it you're going to be staying here with us?" he asked the boy. |

Randall had not thought about his accomidations. Most of the time he slept in unsold houses or on benches. "I don't have much money," Randall disappointingly stated, checking his pockets for any spare change. The truth was Randall had quite a few dollars hidden under a particular bench, in case he ever needs it. But right now he figured pitying an old man would be the most effective approach to a free housing. "I could work it off." Randall had regretted saying that–but when applied to the pity act, the generous old man would probably succumb to Randall's misfortune and allow free housing–and free food–for the night. Taking an apple and taking a juicy bite out of it, he thought about Hannah. Who was she? This man was in fact the perfect person to ask: "And, if I can ask you, who might Hannah be?" |
